The Phillies released Thomas on Tuesday, the Easton Express-Times reports. (8/12/2014)

Year in Review:
Thomas appeared in 102 games and got 310 plate appearances from the Tigers in 2009. At the plate, he was a slightly below-average hitter with a wOBA of .318; taking into account Comerica, a pitcher’s park, he looks a little better, with a wRC+ of 92. He was good at taking walks (10.7% BB/PA) and hit for just-below-average power (ISO of .145 compared to .155 average) but struck out a ton (28% K/AB), which killed his batting average (.240). Thomas only attempted three steals – all of them successful – after running much more often in the minors. (In just 121 games at Triple-A in 2008 and 2009 he had 47 steals on 61 attempts). His outfield defense was very good.
The Year Ahead:
Thomas’s value depends on how much playing time he gets. He played some center field in the minors and could get the starting job there over Wilkin Ramirez or Austin Jackson, an offseason acquisition from the Yankees. If not, he will still get a fair number PAs as a corner outfielder when Magglio Ordonez or Carlos Guillen needs the day off or, potentially, go on the DL. But even if he plays extensively, Thomas does not have the power or batting-average skills to be a valuable fantasy outfielder. Meanwhile, his best skills – walks and defense – are not rewarded in most fantasy leagues. Given 400 PAs he should hit about .250 with seven homers and 45 runs and RBI. But Thomas could provide some value with stolen bases. If he starts running again, he could get 15 or 20 steals in 400 PAs. (Dave Allen)
If one wanted a concise summation of what kind of year the Twins offense had, consider this: Clete Thomas played in nearly 100 games, and got 322 plate appearances. Thomas hit .214/.290/.307, and struck out in 28.6% of his plate appearances. But with Aaron Hicks' arrested development, and injury woes aplenty, the Twins were left with little choice to try capitalize on the hot season Thomas was having down in Triple-A (.296/.385/.576). The Twins wisely outrighted Thomas off the 40-man roster after the season, and he has since landed with the Phillies on a minor league deal. He can hack centerfield, and can run into one if/when he makes contact. But he's no better than a fourth outfielder who should really only play sparingly, and preferably only versus righties. And probably not for your fantasy team. (Brandon Warne)
The Quick Opinion:
Thomas probably needs a Domonic Brown trade to crack the roster, unless the Phillies aren't comfortable with John Mayberry as a backup centerfield option. Still, Thomas will likely see a lot of Lehigh Valley.
