Profile: Rene Rivera wasn’t even on the Mets depth chart when the season started. d’Arnaud was the uncontested starting catcher, Plawecki his backup, and Johnny Monell sitting in AAA if needed. Unfortunately, injury befell d’Arnaud, Plawecki never hit, and the pitching staff was giving up a tremendous number of stolen bases. Rene Rivera’s strong arm and pitch framing locked him into the starting role for the majority of the season out of defensive necessity. He managed a career high HR/FB%, but it appears largely due to a significant drop in flyball rate. Otherwise his offense is very poor, among the worst in the league. (Andrew Perpetua)

The Quick Opinion: It remains to be seen what the Mets will do with their catching situation, it is hard to believe Rivera will be their starter in 2017. Odds are the Rivera will slide into the backup catcher role.
