Profile: Before everyone, even middle infielders, hit homers, there was Hardy. In the span of seven seasons from 2007 to 2013, he averaged ~21 homers a year at a position that rarely produced power. He was a worthwhile fantasy asset during that time, even if his greatest real life skill was his incredible defense at shortstop. However, father time has come, and Hardy has struggled to stay on the field over the past two seasons. While his 2016 season was a tremendous improvement - he lowered his strikeout rate, increased his walk rate, added 40 points of isolated power, and added 40 points to his batting average on balls in play - it still wasn't enough for him to be fantasy-relevant. Part of that was injuries (shoulder, foot) that caused him to play in just 114 and 115 games during 2015 and 2016, respectively. Part of it was likely age, as Hardy will be 34 in 2017 and isn't getting any younger. Though he has maintained his aptitude as a real asset to his MLB club, perhaps his greatest fantasy contribution over the past two seasons is the time he has spent off the field. Those injuries paved the way for his superstar teammate, Manny Machado, to keep shortstop eligibility over the past two seasons.(Joe Douglas)

The Quick Opinion: While Hardy showed a 2.3-WAR improvement in 2016, he is no longer a fantasy asset beyond deep leagues. The power we used to expect is gone, putting him in the class of the "better in real life than fantasy" shortstops.
