Outman returned from Tommy John surgery to fight -- though his old nemesis, control, was a pest at times. He could continue to stand for truth, justice and outs as he joins the million-man scrum for the Rockie's fifth slot in the rotation. (David Golebiewski)
Outman was never much in the starting rotation, thanks to his complete and total inability to retire right-handed hitters. For his career, right-handed hitters have posted a .368 wOBA against Outman, compared to a .237 mark against southpaws. He began the 2013 season in a long relief role that didn't leverage his skillset, but as the season wore on Rockies manager Walt Weiss began using him more in the LOOGY role, and aside from one disastrous outing (9/24 vs. Boston) in September, he handled the role pretty well. He picked up eight of his career-best 13 holds in the second half, and for the season he was death to lefties. In fact, over the past two seasons, Outman's 2.50 FIP ranks 26th out of the 327 pitchers who have tossed at least 40 innings against left-handed hitters. And his 2.41 xFIP across the same sample of pitchers ranks 11th-best overall. If Colorado continues to leverage him properly, Outman can be a real weapon in the Rockies bullpen. Whether or not they do is another question, and even if they do he probably won't rack up enough holds to be relevant in the few fantasy leagues that use holds as a category, but given where Outman was following the 2011 season, even fringy fantasy relevance counts as a major step up.
The Quick Opinion:
After years of being an ineffective starter, Outman was converted to relief, and he has taken to the LOOGY role with aplomb.
Outman’s inability to harness the strike zone has been a problem of late. One that is amplified by his inability to put right-handed batters away, if and when he does get ahead. After becoming a LOOGY in 2013, he was effective, and that carried over into 2014, albeit in a limited sample size. Right-handed hitters still torched him, though, posting a .403 weighted on-base average, and only striking out 19% of the time while garnering a free pass in 15% of their at-bats. That’s not going to work. In theory, Josh Outman shouldn’t ever face a right-handed batter, especially in a high leverage situation. After being designated for assignment in late September, it remains to be seen if Outman will be able to get another shot in the big leagues. Unless he’s able to throw some more strikes, it might not matter. (Landon Jones)
The Quick Opinion:
Certain pitching coaches have been able to rein in pitchers in the past, but it remains to be seen if one can work any magic with Outman. Without improved command, he won’t make much of an impact going forward.
