Year in Review:
As a 23-year-old hurler, the left-handed West spent half of 2009 in Double-A and the other half in the big leagues. He was called up to Florida at the end of May, but he then went back to Double-A for four starts at the end of July before returning to the Marlins rotation in early August. Overall, he started 20 games for the Marlins, pitching 103 innings of 4.79 ERA ball (with an xFIP of 4.93). West struck out only 6.1 batters per nine innings while giving up a slightly above-average number of walks (3.8 per nine) and fly balls (41%). Still, it was a promising performance for a pitcher of his age against Major League batters. During his time in Double-A, West struck out more than a batter per inning, giving hope to better strikeout numbers in 2010.
The Year Ahead:
West will enter spring training in a competition with Anibal Sanchez, Chris Volstad, Rick VandenHurk, and Andrew Miller for the final three spots behind Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco. Assuming he gets one of the spots – which he has a very good shot at doing – West should throw about 150 innings with an ERA of 4.60, a WHIP of 1.50, 115 strikeouts, and seven or more wins. But there is considerable uncertainty around this projection; in the minors he had some command issues, so a higher ERA and WHIP is a definite possibility. On the other hand, he struck out a batter an inning in Double-A in 2009, so more strikeouts are also possible. At this point, he is an NL-only or very deep mixed-league option, but if he looks good out of the gate he could become an option in shallower mixed leagues. (Dave Allen)
Other than his left hand, there's not too much to hang your hat on with Sean West. He's lost plenty of innings to injury already, and the only time he ever struck out a batter per frame, it was in a 64-inning stretch in Double-A. He has the ability to strike out people at an average rate, and in a good year his walk rate will approach average as well. He's a fly-baller -- at least he's in a good park for that -- so he won't be inducing double plays to erase his mistakes. He barely cracks 90 MPH on the gun, and his fastball has been a negative over his career according to our pitch-type values. This train may be on its way to the bullpen. With a few more ticks on his fastball, maybe the rest of his package can garner more swinging strikes. Any Marlin pitcher against a righty-dominated lineup at home is worth the odd spot start, but counting on West to do any more for your fantasy team would be a mistake. (Eno Sarris)
The Quick Opinion:
Teach your children to throw with their left hands. At the very least, they'll have a chance to put up the same mediocre peripherals as Sean West, meaning they'll have a chance to a Major League pitcher.
