Profile: Grilli was off to a great start with Atlanta in 2015 before he ruptured his Achilles tendon. He started off slowly for Atlanta in 2016 posting a 5.29 earned run average and it seemed better days were behind for the 39 year old, especially with his fastball velocity dropping to 91.8 miles per hour with in Atlanta in 2016 after throwing 94 MPH in 2015. Then Atlanta moved Grilli to Toronto where his fastball velo increased (92.6) and his ERA dropped to 3.64, which would certainly seem like a resurgence. Buyers beware, however, as his fielding independent pitching indicated that neither of his two stints were in line with how he was pitching. In Atlanta, his FIP (4.44) was almost a whole run lower than his ERA. In Toronto, his FIP (4.29) was better than in Atlanta, but also worse than his ERA. The main driving force behind this appears to be his left on-base percentage where he stranded 70% of runners in Atlanta and 84% in Toronto. Unless Grilli figured out the trick to pitching with runners on-base, expect his numbers to regress from what he did in Toronto and improve upon what he did with Atlanta. Appears to be next in-line for saves in Toronto as of now, but isn’t necessarily the best set-up option with the exception of those deeper leagues. Strikeout numbers are strong, but beyond that, nothing too sexy about this profile. (Paul Kastava)

The Quick Opinion: Grilli appeared to have two different seasons with Atlanta and Toronto, but FIP says he was virtually the same pitcher with both teams and just experienced different results. His full-season numbers tell a more accurate story and despite posting strong strikeout numbers, not an ideal play unless you are in a holds league or want to handcuff Roberto Osuna.
