Prior to the season, Herrera was so unknown that fan site TrueBlueLA
had him ranked as the #117 prospect
... no, not in baseball; just in the Dodger organization. But as the 40-man roster was torn asunder by injury after injury, the team had little choice but to promote Herrera in May, and shockingly he was an immediate hit. After his first month, he had a .407 on-base percentage while seeing time at four positions, and while that came with a .410 batting average on balls in play that was clearly unsustainable, it was a bright light in the lowest point of the Dodger season. Predictably, he was unable to keep that up, and he was back in the minors by the All-Star break. Even with the hot start, a wOBA of .304 and a strikeout rate of 23.4% is little to be proud of, and little in his minor league record suggests he has more to offer. This was probably the peak of his career, but hey: at least people know his name now. (
The Quick Opinion:
Virtually unknown even to Dodger fans when 2012 started, longtime minor leaguer Elian Herrera was a shocking contributor for about a month before falling back to earth, eventually landing back in the minors -- where he's likely to remain.
Organizational solider Elian Herrera got into only four games for the Dodgers in 2013, and now moves on to Milwaukee where he hopes his brand of multi-positional versatility can get him out of the minors and into the bigs. Needless to say, there's no fantasy use here.
Herrera will likely see playing time in the majors at some point this season, just as he has for each of the last three years. However, he is just a .261/.318/.333 hitter through 362 major-league plate appearances. He has zero power and hasn't been a threat on the basepaths since 2011. He is now 30 years old and will not be on your fantasy team. (
The Quick Opinion:
Last year with the Brewers, Herrera struck out 36 times while drawing just two unintentional walks. Inspiring.
After being non-tendered by the Brewers, Elian Herrera will have a spring training invitation to try to make the Dodgers. There are aspects of Herrera’s game that are appealing, namely his switch-hitting and defensive versatility—he’s played all three outfield positions and every infield position but first base within the last two years, and he was passable at all of them. But even if he makes the Dodgers as a utility player, there is not much to get excited about in fantasy. His career four-to-one strikeout-to-walk rate is abysmal and has pulled his on-base percentage below .300 in his last two seasons. He stole 30-plus bases at three different stops at the minors, but his lack of on-base skills have held him to 11 steals in total in 639 career major league plate appearances. He hit a surprising seven home runs in 277 plate appearances last season but had just one previously in 362 plate appearances. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are loaded with other bench options including Alex Guerrero and Chase Utley—assuming Enrique Hernandez is the starter at second base—that could make it difficult for Herrera to even make the roster. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere for multi-position eligible options.
The Quick Opinion:
Elian Herrera will have a chance to make the Dodgers in spring training, but with abysmal strikeout and walk rates, speed held hostage by a lack of on-base skills, and limited power, there is not much to get excited about in fantasy if he does.
