Elmore, a non-roster invitee, is a legitimate contender for an Opening Day roster spot, Corey Long of MLB.com reports. (3/2/2017)

Jake Elmore was drafted in the 34th round by the Diamondbacks in 2008, and was mostly unimpressive as a minor-league hitter until 2012, when, as a 25-year-old in the PCL, he hit .344/.442/.465 with 32 steals and earned himself a late-season call-up. 73 major-league plate appearances don't have statistical significance, so Elmore's .191/.247/.250 line should not be taken too seriously on its own. However, he had never been a particularly impressive hitter in the minors, nor was he ever especially young for his level. In 2012 the PCL made him look awesome, as it has so many other prospects with far better pedrigrees before him who went on to fail (Brandon Wood being the classic, over-used example). This is not to say that Elmore has not shown anything prior to 2012: He always had good plate discipline (for his minor league career he has walked more than he has struck out) and stole a lot of bases. However, the lack of power and generally unremarkable numbers prior to his batted-ball-luck-inflated hot streak in the 2012 PCL do not inspire confidence, nor does the Diamondbacks' willingness to let him go to the Astros. At the moment, Elmore is in a playing time competition with Tyler Greene and Marwin Gonzalez at shortstop. Greene's offense is probably better than Gonzalez's, and his defense is probably better than Elmore's, but this is a competition worth watching for your deep league middle infielder spot. (Matt Klaassen)
The Quick Opinion:
Jake Elmore came out of nowhere to have a monster year in the PCL in 2012, which earned him a brief audition in Arizona. After the season, the Diamondbacks let him go to the Astros, where he is now in a scrum for the shortstop position with Marwin Gonzalez and Tyler Greene.
Were it not for his shortstop eligibility, Jake Elmore wouldn't be worth much thought for fantasy purposes. But he is shortstop eligible, and while he's likely bound for a utility role in Chicago, he's a player worth watching for his one passable offensive skill: on-base percentage. Elmore boasts a career minor league OBP of .387. He didn't hit for much power last year for the Astros (.083 isolated slugging percentage), and he hit for a low average (.242), but he did walk at a nearly 10% clip (9.6, to be exact) and that provided him a solid OBP of .313. He'll never be a fantasy star, but with playing time, and on the right team, his OBP skills may provide fantasy value. (
The Quick Opinion:
Elmore hits for low average and not much power, but he does walk. In the right situation, he may have value. That's unlikely to be the case in 2014 with the White Sox where he's in line for a utility infield gig, but injuries or trades may open that door.
In 221 major league plate appearances, Jake Elmore owns a .221/.288/.291 slash line. In fairness, he’s posted a solid 88% contact rate and, in seven seasons in the minors, a .290/.385/.388 slash line with walk rates consistently in double digits, suggesting that he could be league-average or better at reaching base. He hasn’t received much of an opportunity in his parts of three seasons in The Show, however, and entering his age-28 campaign, he’s likely been typecast. Elmore needs to end up with an organization that gives him a legit chance to claim a bench spot. Even if he were to stumble upon semi-regular playing time, though, his fantasy upside is limited to the volume that results from it. One stolen base in seven MLB opportunities indicates that, on the farm, he was just an opportunist. At best, he’d be worth an in-season Free Agency Auction Budget claimer. (Nicholas Minnix)
The Quick Opinion:
Elmore hasn’t received much of a major league chance, but his minor league marks suggest that he’s pretty good at reaching base. He’s not on the fantasy radar, however, because he has no power, speed, or firm grip on a 25-man roster spot.
Jake Elmore exists is in all 30 organizations across baseball. Technically, he exists in just one (the Milwaukee Brewers, for now), but every team's got a Jake Elmore, because Jake Elmore is entirely unremarkable and therefore easily replaceable. Since 2012, he's been employed by Arizona, Houston, Cincinnati, Oakland and Tampa Bay, respectively, and now it's Milwaukee. He's played every position on the diamond (literally, them all) and he hasn't hit a lick. Hey, how did you find this page, anyway? (
The Quick Opinion:
We are all Jake Elmore.
