Schafer was one of the Brewers' September callups in 2011 and recorded more games played (eight) than plate appearances (five). That statistic succinctly describes where his value comes from: defense in center field. Schafer has hit all of 15 home runs in the Minor Leagues since 2008 and his five at Triple-A in 40 games was considered a power explosion after he didn't hit a single one in the previous 50 games at Double-A. He shows decent plate discipline and rarely strikes out, recording a strikeout rate around 11% in the minors last season. If he can maintain those levels, he'd make a fine defense-first fourth outfielder, but he simply doesn't look to have the power to play every day in the majors. (Jack Moore)
The Quick Opinion:
Schafer earned a cup of coffee in 2011 and may break camp with the Brewers in 2012, but his value is strictly on defense, as his bat lacks the pop to create fantasy value.
Schafer has shown an ability to swipe bases in the minors, but he won't hit for power and some have concerns about his ability to handle left-handed pitching. In terms of draft-day value, he projects to only be a fourth outfielder for the Brewers to start the year with an outside shot at eventually serving as the left-side platoon for Carlos Gomez in center field. No need to get excited. (JP Breen)
Schafer is a lovely defensive specialist who can handle all three outfield positions, but he proved to be overmatched at the plate (.269 weighted on-base average) in his rookie season. While the 27-year-old can swipe a few bags, he offers nothing else of value offensively and should be nothing more than the fourth-or-fifth outfielder in Milwaukee. (JP Breen)
Schafer is a career .209/.283/.320 hitter in 503 major-league plate appearances. There are very few things we can be certain of in this life -- aside from death and taxes, of course. One of those few certainties is Logan Schafer's fantasy irrelevance. It's strangely comforting. (
The Quick Opinion:
The only way Logan Schafer ends up on any fantasy teams this year is if an owner mistakes him for Jordan Schafer. Even then, I've still got questions.
At one time, it might have been important not to confuse Logan Schafer with Jordan Schafer. As both of their major league careers have declined, that is no longer much of an issue. Now, it is much more important not to confuse Logan Schafer with Logan Forsythe. Schafer (Logan) has now spent parts of five seasons in the majors with the Brewers and received only 646 plate appearances. The result has been five home runs, 10 stolen bases, and a line of .212/.285/.334 and a demotion off the 40-man roster at the end of the season. Electing free agency instead of another year with the Brewers organization, he could not find a major league deal. Logan (Schafer) has signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals, but is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster. His track record, projections, lack of a 40-man roster spot, and multiple players ahead of him make it tough to imagine he will make much of an impact this season. (Craig Edwards)
The Quick Opinion:
Logan Schafer is not likely to get significant playing time this season, and he is long past his prospect stage. If he gets playing time, he is unlikely to perform well.
