Profile: Smith seems to be an underappreciated dominant reliever who has received few save chances. The reason Smith has never closed is because he’s left-handed and struggled against right-handed hitting. Against lefties, he has a career 2.76 FIP, but his it jumps to 4.00 against righties. He’s not an extreme LOOGY and has faced a near-league-average number of left-handed batters over his career. The Giants will utilize him in the fireman role by pitching him against the other team’s tough lefties. He may end up with a few saves if other relievers in the Giants bullpen struggle or get injured. (Jeff Zimmerman)

The Quick Opinion: Smith has posted elite numbers, which would suggest he could possibly close, but being left-handed and struggling against right-handed hitting will keep behind Mark Melancon.
