Profile: When the Indians shipped off Shin-Soo Choo, the prize of the return package was a young right-handed pitcher, but a slightly older RHP came along for the ride, and Bryan Shaw has proven to be more than just a throw-in for the Indians. Shaw's peripherals never seem to match his results (he has a 3.63 xFIP and 3.00 ERA over his four years with Cleveland and has never posted an ERA higher than his xFIP), but the results have been good, all the same. He leads MLB relievers in appearances over the last four years, with 299, and his 282 innings pitched ranks third. He is tied for fifth in holds, with 84. He's done it with limited strikeouts (125th of 222 in strikeout rate), middling control (114th in walk rate with the 14th most walks). He's limited hard contact (tied for eighth in Hard%), but still has a 10.4% home run-to-fly ball rate. So what gives? Honestly, I am not sure. I would expect more of the same though - not enough K's or saves to be a fantasy stud, but enough holds to matter in leagues where those count. And a near-league-leading number of appearances. The Quick Opinion: Bryan Shaw may be the third wheel in Cody Allen and Andrew Miller's lock-down back end, but he's a workhorse who should own the 7th or 8th (whichever Miller isn't using on any given night) for the Indians.
