Year in Review:
With a cadre of young, talented Oriole pitchers poised to make their debuts in 2009 (see: Chris Tillman, Brian Matusz, David Hernandez, Jason Berken) it's a little surprising that it was Bergesen who put up the best season. He led all Oriole pitchers with a 2.3 WAR, throwing 121.1 innings of solid, if unspectacular, ball. Bergesen's strikeout rate of 4.74 K/9 was decidedly on the low side, but his low walk rate (2.34 BB/9) and above-average ground-ball rate (50.1%) contributed to his 4.10 FIP. On July 30 he was forced to leave his start in the seventh inning after getting hit in the leg by a line drive. Bergesen went on the DL the next day and was gone for the rest of the season.
The Year Ahead:
Bergesen is kind of the definition of a low-ceiling pitcher. While, according to John Sickels, he showed a 90-95 mph fastball in high school, that sort of velocity is a thing of the past now. Bergesen averaged 89.2 mph on his fastball in 2009, relying on location and ground balls to be effective. Though the 3.43 ERA is unlikely to be repeated, an ERA in the 4.50-range seems reasonable. The lack of walks makes a good case for a reasonable WHIP, too. One concern is Bergesen's shin injury. While originally treated as a relatively minor situation, lingering pain in the leg kept pushing his return date back. The righty started a running program in mid-November – just stay tuned for any reports on it. (Carson Cistulli)
Remember 2009 when, as a rookie, Brad Bergesen made 19 starts for Baltimore, winning seven of them, and posting a 3.43 ERA? Neither do Orioles fans. The 2011 season was a nightmare for Bergesen, his second disappointing campaign in a row, and he finished the year in the bullpen, where he’s slotted for 2012. What Bergesen’s selling -- below-average strikeout, groun-ball, and home run rates -- you’re not in the market for. Out of Minor League options in 2012, Bergesen’s status is further clouded, and he’s unlikely to be drafted in most leagues. Remember, when looking at Baltimore Orioles pitchers, make sure to you ask yourself: How desperate am I? (Navin Vaswani)
The Quick Opinion:
Bergesen struggled in 2011, eventually moving to the Baltimore Orioles’ bullpen after starting the season in the rotation. Out of Minor League options, and set to face competition on the mound in spring training, where Bergesen will pitch in 2012 is unclear, killing the miniscule chance he had of being drafted -- in any league -- in the first place.
