At just age 26 and pitching in his fourth system, Danny Farquhar settled in as a high-leverage reliever for the Mariners. All it took was a new arm slot that led to bigger velocity numbers. Lord Farquhar saved 16 games for the M’s last year, and he enters 2014 with a chance to stay in the ninth inning. Farquhar has a sweet cutter and solid curveball, and he’s not afraid to bring his cutter back over the plate for a called strike. Farquhar may have had a 4.20 ERA last year, but his FIP was below 2.00 and his peripherals suggest an ERA below 3.00 is not out of the question. Farquhar isn’t a lock to gather saves this year -- his team has been rumored to be in on a few late-inning relievers -- but his strikeout rate should be good enough for you to roster him anyway, just in case. (Zach Sanders)
The Quick Opinion:
Danny Farquhar finally got a chance to prove himself in the majors, and he saved 16 games in Seattle last season. Farquhar isn’t a lock to serve as the Mariners closer, but his strikeout rate should be good enough for you to roster him anyway, just in case.
A year after serving as the second-half closer for the Mariners, Danny Farquhar settled nicely into a fireman role in 2014, tossing 71 sparkling innings and picking up 13 holds. Sadly, as a member of The Best Bullpen in Baseball, Farquhar has plenty of competition for late inning action, even if closer Fernando Rodney takes a tumble. With a sick cutter and a nasty hook, Farquhar is likely the Mariners best reliever, but expect another season with a sub-3.00 ERA and 15 holds. If Farquhar can manage to pick up even five saves, you’re going to want him around as a cheap option in mixed leagues. (Zach Sanders)
The Quick Opinion:
Farquhar may very well be the Mariners best reliever, but he’s stuck as the fireman and isn’t likely to see save opportunities. Don’t bet on Lord Farquhar in standard leagues, but he’s a nice AL-only relief arm.
Danny Farquhar came out of nowhere to be one of the best relievers in baseball back in 2013, but it’s been all downhill from there. His ability to generate swinging strikes has taken a dip, and he’s given up more homers in the process. Despite his willingness to have relievers with fly-ball tendencies, Mariners’ General Manager Jerry DiPoto traded Lord Farquhar to the Rays this offseason, where the right-hander will join a talented and deep bullpen. Farquhar’s velocity has dipped, and despite the fact his cutter still sits at 89 mph, he’s started to rely more on his offspeed offerings, which aren’t of the same caliber. The Rays have done good work with relievers, so perhaps they can convince Farquhar to go back to what made him successful in the first place: working his cutter on both sides of the plate and spinning in the occasional offspeed pitch to keep hitters honest. With Brad Boxberger and Alex Colome already in the fold, there’s little room at the back of the ‘pen for Farquhar, but space could open up at the trade deadline if the Rays fall out of contention -- and perhaps even if they don’t. Farquhar will have minimal value until that time, even in leagues that count holds. (Zach Sanders)
The Quick Opinion:
With their history of fixing up relievers who have had past success, it’s possible the Rays believe Danny Farquhar can be a quality setup man, but there’s no room for him to pick up saves, perhaps even if Brad Boxburger is traded.
