Profile: Travis Wood made 77 appearances in 2016, his first full campaign as a reliever. There were some things to like about that, particularly his success against lefties. Opposing left-handed hitters hit just .128 off of Wood, while posting an on-base percentage of just .208. Their percentage of hard hit balls was about 11% lower than that against right-handed hitters, leaving Wood as the de facto LOOGY for the 2016 Cubs. His overall velocity was also up across the board as well. And even with a 2.95 ERA, there are still some reasons to question Wood as anything beyond a matchup guy moving forward. His walks remained a touch high, at 3.54 per nine, including two months where he almost touched five BB/9. Despite a solid ERA, his FIP came in at 4.54, the ninth highest among National League relievers. That figure, in particular, ballooned to 6.51 in July and 5.47 in August. It's important to note that he was the beneficiary of a .215 average on balls put in play by opposing hitters. With those factors to consider, it'll be interesting to see where Wood lands in free agency. He's worth keeping an eye on if he earns a spot in the Royals rotation. If he fails, and ends up in a LOOGY role, that makes him all the less interesting. (Randy Holt)

The Quick Opinion: Travis Wood spent the entirety of 2016 coming out of the bullpen for the first time in his career, posting a respectable 2.95 ERA and faring quite well against lefties. However, slightly high walk numbers and a penchant for giving up solid contact could limit his opportunities moving forward.
