  1. 67, coincidentally, is the number of blown saves the Tigers will have this year.

  9. Poor Leyland. Dream job, attractive wife, makes millions, good family. What a loser.

  10. This can’t possibly be true. I remember him managing Pittsburgh 20+ years ago as a kid and he seemed old. I figured he had to be pushing 80 if not older.

  11. Manager aging curves?

1920-2011, 3 year buckets, min 3000 games managed per bucket:

    Age wins/162
    33 77
    36 79
    39 81
    42 80
    45 80
    48 81
    51 82
    54 81
    57 81
    —-
    60 85
    63 85
    66 88

Leyland is just hitting his prime– someone give him a big deal now!! :)

  12. In this famous picture of Fidrych after one of his last wins (1980), a much younger Leyland (sitting next to his mom, to whom the Bird just gave the game ball) is the guy behind Fidrych with his arm raised. Leyland had managed Fidrych in the minors at a rehab stint.
