A Strange Baseball Brew

The Hillsboro team in Oregon needed a team name. They were in Oregon, a “proud agricultural” state that produced the second-most hops in America — it was obvious. The Hillsboro Hops will begin play in 2013 with a fancy new logo and an open question at the mascot position. Cheers to them!

Maybe this will open the door for:

The Squabbletown Suds
The Bee Rock Brews
The Askewville Ales
The Beanblossom Brewski
The French Lick Foam
The Big Sky Bitters
The Cold Water Cold Ones
The Paradise Pints
The Cherry Hill Crafts
The Marathon Microbrews
The Jupiter Jugs
The Plaster City Pilsners
The Date City Draughts
The Portland Porters
The London (KY) Lagers

I always thought that “Growlers” would be a good name for a minor league team.

I like the Hops as a name, and will be at games.

Nicely done. Allow me to offer…

    Pensacola Pale Ale
    Bozeman Barley Reapers
    Minot Malt Makers
Silver City Steins (and they already have a brewery, it seems)

I’d go Cherry Hill Krieks instead of Crafts, but that’s just me.

I just think this was a missed opportunity for Yakima. The Hillsboro Hops are the former Yakima Bears. Oregon’s 2nd place in hop production to Washington, and of course the epicenter of hop production in Washington is the Yakima valley.

You chickened out, Yakima. You could’ve given the team a name that spoke not only to affluent white guys in the crucial 25-45 demographic, but also a team name that echoed a crucial local industry. And instead you went generic.

I love this part of the milb.com story: “The Hillsboro Hops are the Single-A baseball affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks of Major League Baseball.” If you altogether ignore the Diamondbacks’ other two Single-A affiliates that statement is entirely true.
