All Work and No Play Raises Qs About Nick Steiner

Readers of FanGraphs will likely have seen either the handle vivaelpujols or the name Nick Steiner or both around these saber internets. Steiner has contributed/still contributes to The Hardball Times and Viva El Birdos and has been generally involved in the sabermetric community.

This past Tuesday, he started a Twitter account. To say that his submissions have been of the single-minded variety would be an understatement.

For example, consider this tweet:

That’s a pretty reasonable debut — informative, baseball-related — except for here’s his second and third tweets, as well:

Huh.

“Well, maybe he just doesn’t understand the technology?” is one thing you could be thinking. That’s unlikely, because (a) Mr. Steiner is pretty clearly a sharp guy (smart enough to do a Pitchf/x study of Brad Penny, for example) and (b), here’s his fourth tweet:

If you’re wondering, the answer is “yes.” And, if you’re continuing to wonder, the question is, “Un peu de concerned, Carson Cistulli?”

Here are four more, in chronological order:

This brings us to the (brief) part of the show where Steiner begins communicating with second parties.

Behold:

And, as of 4:30pm ET, here’s your latest:

What conclusions might we draw from this? Well, for one, Nick Steiner is definitely working on a Pitchf/x article about Brad Penny. As for Mr. Steiner’s current mental health, that’s purely a matter of speculation.

Carson Cistulli has recently started a new project called Paris Matches.

I also saw something on twitter about him eating semen for breakfast. I knew VEP’s sense of humor was rather offbeat, but um…yeah. That’s when I decided to stop following.

I blame myself for this—VEP fell into the Brad Penny Fastball Wormhole on my watch, and I let it happen. I let the science become more important to me than the human being…

This is a glorious hijacking of some kind by VEB. Meta jokes are supposed to be contained, damnit!

So…this sunday, we can expect to see the Penny pitch f(x) post right?
