Balk of the Year

Hard to argue with one Mr. Aron Bender’s bestowing of the title “Balk of the Year” on this little gem:

That’s Mike Pelfrey pitching for the Mets in Saturday’s game against the Phillies, with Dom Brown batting. The balk moved runners to second and third, but luckily for Pelfrey, he got Brown to ground out to end the inning. If Brown singles in one or two runs there, I’m sure Pelfrey hears about it the next day from Mike Francesa. Instead, it’s just a harmless (albeit hilarious) balk.

Pretty good — I thought we had already seen the balk of the year with Verlander. Maybe this is the Year of the Balk.

How is that a balk? Did he already set himself? I see no motion towards the plate.

If the ball falls out of your glove is it possible not to balk?

I can’t really see the look on his face when he drops the ball, but I love what I imagine it to be.

He looks like he immediately accepts the screw-up and moves forward. I more want to know his thoughts while this happens.

I have been watching this on repeat for about four minutes. It never gets less funny. That shoulder shrug of resignation when he looks down and sees the ball is priceless.

You should poll between this and Verlander, and anybody who knocks his own hat off during the delivery.

I love the way he tries to step off the rubber after he sees the ball on the ground. Cause, well, it couldn’t hurt, eh?

  12. The very heart of your writing whilst sounding reasonable initially, did not really sit very well with me personally after some time. Someplace throughout the paragraphs you actually managed to make me a believer but only for a very short while. I however have got a problem with your jumps in logic and you would do well to fill in all those breaks. In the event that you actually can accomplish that, I would surely be impressed.
