Here is a thing that I made. I picked the Red Sox at random. I thought some of you might enjoy it, and maybe I will do it for other teams too.
Mississippi Matt Smith: Big Chart, Do Not Eat.
steex: Well, I don’t know what I expected.
Seriously though, that’s fantastic. I suspect I am not the only one who would be absolutely delighted if you did other teams. I won’t even get all selfish and request any particular team, anything you see fit to create would be great!
Great concept, but it’s got a big flaw right now. It seems virtually impossible to identify players by color unless you know what to look for. It’s easy to find Ted Williams, for example, but matching up anyone but the greats is very difficult. Perhaps try using more colors or listing the names of the players under the relevant section of the graph?
I want to be able to look at a sliver of the graph and quickly answer the question of “Who is that?”. I also want to easily be able to answer “Which sliver is Wade Boggs?”
There aren’t that many widely different colours. MSMS did a great job isolating each colour into a different era; for instance, Ted Williams blue is very similar to Wade Boggs blue, but there is no trouble distinguishing these since the scale goes by years.
Should have made it clear that the players in the legend are listed in chronological order — so that you can pretty easily identify a sliver by working your way forward/backward and referring to general colors. I agree, though, it’s not an ideal solution. I’ll tinker with the design a bit. Thanks for the feedback.
It would probably make more sense to organize that legend:
1 4 7
2 5 8
3 6 9
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
That way, one can look at the left side of the timeline and not have to scan to the right side of the legend for the relevant names.
This is fantastic. +1 vote for doing this for other teams!
This is cool. Definitely agree with Cass’ critiques though. Too many similar colors for those of us that have deficiencies discerning colors that close together.
Hey, how come there’s that big gap between gold stars?
I kid, of course. Good stuff.
That’s awesome! I vote for more.
Please do more of these. Awesome work.
