Grant Balfour Utilizes Socratic Method with Victor Martinez

Though regarded in our time as the Father of Western Thought, it was by embracing his own ignorance and asking almost exclusively questions of his interlocutors that Socrates sought out wisdom.

Nor has the Socratic tradition lost its relevance as a rhetorical device in the modern age. One finds, for example, in the footage embedded here, Oakland right-hander Grant Balfour utilizing an urgent line of inquiry to better understand Detroit designated hitter Victor Martinez‘s impressions of the world.

Asks Balfour of Martinez: “Why the fuck you looking at me, man?” And also: “What’s your fucking problem, man?” One notes immediately the deep similarities between this brief exchange and much of Plato’s Phaedrus.

Let it be known that Victor Martinez, also known in this dialogue as ‘VMArt’ and even ‘Student’, employed the technique of mimesis effectively after Balfour’s first inquiry, only to lose track of Balfour’s exceedingly elaborate methods of elenchus.

As an Aussie I think I have to explain that this was something of a cultural misunderstanding. ‘What the fuck is your problem, bitch?’ and ‘Why the fuck you looking at me, man?’ are actually terms of endearment down under.

As much as I would to defend a fellow Aussie- Balfour is a complete wanker.

And the announcers saying I’m not sure who instigated it first was also a misunderstanding. It actually meant, “Try not to hear those words that our over-worked intern forgot to bleep out despite the time delay from recording to broadcast and time delay between the first few “fucks” and the enactment of the bleeps about 10 swear words later.

As a citizen of a nation with a long and proud tradition of insults on the sporting field, Balfour has let his country down, I’m afraid.
