HitTracking Miguel Olivo’s Raburn-Aided Home Run

In case you missed it, Miguel Olivo hit what will surely be in the running for Funniest Homer of 2011 in yesterday’s Mariners/Tigers game. You can check the video here.

Of course, when it comes to home runs, there’s no better resource than the fantastic HitTracker Online, which charts and stores every home run dating back to 2005. Their entry* for this home run is interesting, to say the least:

That was the most joy I have gotten out of watching the Mariners this year.

You could call it the 2nd inside-the-park homer of the season, after Victorino’s just the other day. Olivo just didn’t have to run as fast…

Here’s a similar situation on an Alex Cora homer on Aug. 31, 2006, which Alex Rios helped into the RF seats at Fenway Park.

I think I’m enjoying trying to place giant-sized Ryan Raburn in different parts of Comerica Park more than the home run. If he laid out, he could probably cover an entire section of seats.

Will the visual designation for home run just be replaced by a picture of Raburn as baseball moves forward? I hope so…

That homer was hilarious. HitTracker is awesome. Whenever I can’t get a new post to giggle at on NotGraphs I can always get a good laugh out of looking at Jose Bautista’s scatter plot from 2010: “one of these things is not like the other”

It was his very last homer of the season to the opposite field. Almost like he was like ‘I’m almost out of games, better hit one to right before its too late.”
