Photo: Rookie Josh Spence Employs “The Force”

I’m rooting for Josh Spence. You should be, too.

Just in case anyone isn’t aware, the Star Wars backpack thing has been a Padres’ bullpen gag going back to 2010, where the junior-most member is required to haul the Yoda backpack around. Spence is just the latest victim.

Ahhhh… can’t tell if I like that more or less than if he were wearing it of his own volition. Still an awesome photo, though.

I think the white sox used to make them wear hello kitty backpacks or something femanine, which seems more punishing

Twins once had a Barbie backpack in 2009. You can imagine how hilarious it was when FSN showed Jon Rauch digging around the innards of the bag while he was in the bullpen.

Apparently there are quite a few Star Wars fans in the Padres’ clubhouse, even with Eckstein gone: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?id=5429377

Eckstein is gone? I thought that was who Spence was carrying in that photo…

You don’t want to use that ESPN dead link [TBD waves his hand]. You want to use this link: http://phanaticaddict.mlblogs.com/2010/08/28/padres-bullpen-using-jedi-mind-tricks/
