I am actively and I mean ACTIVELY rooting for the Royals to win the next 11 World Series just to cool things down in this thread.

I used to be one of the proverbial “best fans in baseball” but
I quit when they quit on Vince Coleman.

I’m not saying it sucks to be a Cardinals fan or that I feel sorry for them, just that it would make me happy if the Yankees were slightly less dominant than they are. It really has nothing to do with the Cardinals.

As an AL fan, I think I like the NL contenders in exactly the order you rank them, though I might move the Diamondbacks up a few spots based on the awesomeness of 2001.

While I wont be rooting for the Cardinals as my backup team, one unmentioned reason to root for them is that they are second to the Yankees in number of World Series championships. If the Cardinals win three more times before the Yankees win once, then the Yankees will no longer have more than twice as many World Series victories as the next best team. As hating the Yankees is an important part of any good baseball fan’s mindset; I think this is an important point.

There are a number of Nats fans who grew up rooting for the 60s Senators, actually.

I’m a Nats fan since ’05 myself, but I have friends who were Senators fans back in the ’60s. The team has catered to these fans over the years, actually. They’ve hosted a number of events featuring the 60′s Senators’ best player (Frank Howard) and stadium announcer (Charlie Brotman).

Some fans go back longer. The Washington Post had an article not too long ago about some Nats fans who were toddlers back in 1924 and have been waiting for a Washington team to win their whole lives.

I really like the idea of adopting a contender for the rest of the year. I’m going with the Dodgers. They’re just the most likeable to me, whatever that means.
