Freddy Garcia went through several teams and several seasons of shoulder injury and minor league contracts before settling in the majors in 2010 with an actual major league contract. The veteran was once an ace for the Seattle Mariners, but has fallen out of fantasy relevance after six seasons of 200+ IP in 2001-2006. Earlier this decade, Garcia had averaged up and around 7.00 K/9, but has since dropped to a 5.10 K/9 in 2010. A 4.64 ERA and 1.38 WHIP under a league-average BABIP is nothing to get too excited about. Garcia heads into 2011 uncertain about whether or not he will start, and fantasy owners shouldn’t see Garcia as a sleeper to keep watch for. If a team does take a chance on him and give him 150 innings in 2011 (and that’s a big "if"), a 4.40 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 100 Ks may be the ceiling for Freddy. (Albert Lyu)
The Quick Opinion:
Garcia heads into 2011 uncertain about whether or not he will get starts. If he does get 150 innings in 2011 (and that's a big "if"), a 4.40 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 100 Ks may be the ceiling.
Freddy Garcia gave the Yankees some much-needed starting pitching help in 2011. While he was not lights out, he was able to pitch well enough to win 12 games with a 3.62 ERA (the second-best ERA of his career). Going into 2012, he was expected to strike out about six and walk about three guys per nine innings. He would have the same talent level of pitchers like Tim Stauffer and Luke Hochevar. The big question with Freddy in 2012 is where does he end up in the Yankees rotation? CC Sabathia has his spot locked and probably Ivan Nova also. New arrivees Michael Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda probably have the three and four spots locked down. Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett both struggled in 2011, but probably have more upside than Garcia. Garcia is a nice insurance policy for the Yankees, but it doesn't help his fantasy value. For him to be considered in all but the deepest or AL-only leagues, it would be nice if he was one of the top four (or even five) starters for the Yankees. (Jeff Zimmerman)
The Quick Opinion:
Most of his fantasy value will be determined by his role with the Yankees in 2012. Is he even in the rotation after the Yankees went out and acuired Hiroki Kuroda and Michael Pineda.
Garcia's 2012 5.20 ERA may look ugly, but a jump in strikeout rate and a drop in xFIP to 4.06 should be enough to land him a back-end rotation job somewhere. If his landing spot is favorable, he could be useful as a streamer, but the lack of upside as he heads into his age 37 season means he shouldn't be on the late round draft radar. (
Freddy Garcia signed with the Orioles prior to the 2013 season, made ten starts for the Orioles, and was mostly garbage. In August he was sold to the Braves (traded for cash considerations) as a result of the injuries in the Atlanta rotation. He rewarded the Braves with 27.1 superb innings of 1.65 ERA ball, and even made a start in the NLDS against Los Angeles. He is back with the Braves on a minor league deal, and depending on how healthy the front five for the Braves are this year, he may be a streaming option in 2014. He's mostly insurance for Brandon Beachy's elbow and Alex Wood's everything. (
The Quick Opinion:
One of the better insurance policies around the league, Freddy Garcia is probably the Braves sixth- or seventh-best starter. Which makes him waiver wire interesting at some point in the year, but not on draft day.
