The 2011 rookie has the misfortune of owning the third-worst strikeout rate among all pitchers with at least 90 innings pitched. Unfortunately, his lackluster K/9 rates in the minors don’t give us much reason for future optimism either. His swinging strike rate wasn’t as bad as his strikeout rate would suggest, so maybe he will see a spike here…to punching out five batters per nine. He does have rather elite control, but he is also a fly ball pitcher, so all those balls in play are going to inevitably lead to home runs, and lots of them. Though the kid will be just 23 next season, he has shown nothing statistically to hint at much upside here. It would be a surprise if he lasted in the Mariners' rotation all season. (Mike Podhorzer)
The Quick Opinion:
With one of the worst strikeout rates in baseball and not enough ground balls to compensate, Beavan is a pitcher to avoid. Although elite control is a plus, it’s simply not enough to offset his other significant flaws.
Blake Beavan had a pretty nice curve ball and managed to win 11 games in 2012. That's about the end of the good news. Beavan possesses above-average control, but he also had the worst strikeout rate in the American League last year at 10.5%. You could say he pitches to contact if only because he's not fooling anyone. The one thing Beavan had going for him was a big home park, and now they're moving the fences in at Safeco Field. He's a fringe starter in deep leagues at best, and while his ERA might flirt with respectability, his win totals and black-hole strikeout totals won't make him worth the investment. (
The Quick Opinion:
Beavan should be considered only in deeper leagues for spot starts against inferior opponents (should they exist). He's a control expert who gives up piles of hits and lacks the swing-and-miss stuff to make him interesting.
Did you know that Blake Beavan once beat Cuba -- in Cuba -- for team USA? No kidding. He was also the first round draft pick for the Texas Rangers in 2007 after amassing a 9-2 record his senior year in high school with a 0.19 ERA and 139 strikeouts in 73 innings, boasting a 96 mile per hour fastball. Holy smokes! Today? Beavan throws about 89 miles per hour, has one of the league's saddest strikeout rates, and is well back on the Seattle Mariner starting pitcher depth chart. He's organizational depth at this point, and even if he managed to eek out a start, you shouldn't be relying on a pitcher projected to have a near-5.00 ERA and a strikeout rate below 12%. I can't even really recommend him in a deep keeper or AL-only league as he might not even make the club out of Spring Training. You should have better options. (
The Quick Opinion:
Blake Beavan won six games in 16 starts over 94 innings at Triple-A Tacoma, posting a 5.55 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and a 11.4% strikeout rate. Look kids, Big Ben, Parliament.
