Profile: Axford's days as one of the league's elite closers are far behind him, but the former Brewers standout isn't quite done yet. Signed by the Athletics to a 2-year, $10 million contract last spring, Axford made it as high as second in the Oakland bullpen at one point, spelling closer Ryan Madson and plucking 3 saves to go with his 15 holds. Axford's K/9 dropped precipitously in 2016 (8.22 vs. 10.02 in 2015 and a 10.29 career rate), but his swinging strike percentage actually increased, a hint that his K rate could bounce back this year. Axford also turned in one of his lowest walk rates since his dominant years in 2010 - 2011, and continued his late-career trend of inducing a goodly number of groundballs -- 54.2% last year, compared to a league average of 45.3% among all MLB relievers. There's a modicum of fantasy upside here, but in a competitive Athletics bullpen, Axford probably isn't in line for saves and doesn't look to be a guaranteed source of holds, either. (Brice Russ)

The Quick Opinion: Axford saw some high-leverage play in 2016 and could well improve upon last year's performance for 2017. Even if he does, though, his fantasy upside is probably that of a mid-tier setup man.
