Is there a way to measure batting inconsistency?

For instance let's say that a certain batter trades off days where he goes 2/3 the first day then 0/3 the next for an even number of games. His average for the season is then .333 but he is inconsistent. So can we do a distribution of hits per game and see what their average HITS per day is and what their std. deviation is?

One of my favorite writers on the site, Bill Petti, explored this issue not too long ago:

I would argue the situation you describe has the hitter being highly consistent. Alternating 2/3 nights with 0/3 nights is the epidemy of constancy
