Profile: Pomeranz is essentially Rich Hill, from the high-spin fastball and curveball down to the fact that both pitchers have only managed more than 150 major league innings once in their careers. Of course, the 28-year-old Red Sox has had fewer chances to be healthy than the 37-year-old Dodger, and maybe his stuff hasn't produced exactly the same standout whiff and strikeout rates -- perhaps because his command is a bit worse, and his curve doesn't quite have the same spin-rate excellence. That means the ceiling on Pomeranz is lower, but his floor might be higher, too. Can the previously injury-riddled lefty stay healthy, especially now that he's throwing the curve 40% of the time? We don't really have the same attitudes about high-volume curveball usage that we used to, but the track record suggests we should be nervous. Still, project Pomeranz for 120-140 innings, pay for that projection, and you'll have a little bit of upside baked into your price. He could stay healthy all year, or maintain the low batting average on balls in play that he's had ever since he started throwing the curve so often. Either thing would give you more than you paid for. (Eno Sarris)

The Quick Opinion: Over the last three years, batters are hitting under .220 combined on the curve and fastball from Pomeranz. Those pitches are really good, and he's added a decent cutter (.212 BAA), too. Maybe Pomeranz can actually limit results on balls in play a bit, and maybe he can finally throw 180 innings in a season. Those are the maybes you're focusing on if you buy him this year.
