Profile: For a few seasons, one-time All Star Jeff Locke made a solid play for both the Pirates and fantasy owners by outperforming his peripherals, turning in a 3.52 ERA in 2013 and a 3.91 ERA in 2014 despite middling strikeout numbers. Unfortunately, after a mediocre 2015, the bottom fell out last season. Locke threw the most innings of a snakebit Pirates pitching staff (127.1 IP), but he also struck out a mere 13% of the batters he faced (well below the league average of 21%) and allowed hard contact on a career-high 31% of his pitches put in play. Locke gave up 18 combined runs in back-to-back starts, spent most of the second half of the season in the bullpen, and was non-tendered by the Pirates in November. Shortly thereafter, Locke signed a 1-year deal with the Marlins, where he looks to be the odd man out in the rotation but could still sneak by Dan Straily or Tom Koehler for the final spot. Locke should rebound somewhat from his poor 2016 if he does make the rotation, but barring a significant improvement he's unlikely to be more than a fantasy spot starter in 2017. (Brice Russ)

The Quick Opinion: Locke was cut by the Pirates after a season to forget in 2016. Now with the Marlins, he's not guaranteed a starting role, but if he can bring his strikeouts back up he could make it back to the fringes of fantasy relevance this year.
