Alvarez (shoulder) says he will throw a bullpen session in March for interested teams, Manolo Hernandez of Beisbol Porgotas reports. (2/22/2017)Injury:
|Profile: In 2014, Henderson Alvarez rode a bunch of groundballs and a low walk rate (1.6 BB/9) to a 2.65 ERA, making him perhaps the most effective pitcher on the Marlins' roster that year. Unfortunately, he's only pitched 22 innings in the majors since. Alvarez missed most of 2015 with shoulder issues, then, after signing with the Athletics for 2016, hurt his shoulder again after ten brief starts in the minors. Alvarez showed very brief hints that he was rounding into form last year (with 17 K in 18.2 IP at AAA), but his health and team status for 2017 are both up in the air as of press time. Alvarez is a candidate for a late-round injury stash in deeper leagues -- his upside is something like an SP4/5 with low Ks and good ERA/WHIP rates -- but it's probably the safest bet to have no expectations for him this season. The Quick Opinion: Alvarez still has fantasy potential, but he keeps getting injured and his status for 2017 is in question. Keep an eye on him, but don't expect much.
