Profile: For a time in 2014, it looked like Robbie Ross Jr. would become a starting pitcher. But that didn't work out, and when he went back to the bullpen, he didn't pitch well there either. While his 2014 ERA as a starter was a poor 5.70 in 60 innings, he posted a truly abysmal 7.85 ERA in 18.1 innings as a reliever. Still, it was just 18.1 innings, and from 2012-2013, he had posted a sterling 2.62 ERA in 127.1 innings. Perhaps he could regain that form? Not quite, as it turns out. The Rangers would trade him to the Red Sox following that poor showing in 2014, and he would turn things around, but not all the way around. In 116 innings in '15 and '16, Ross tallied a 3.57 ERA. Not bad, not great. Fine. He garnered six saves in 2015, but with Craig Kimbrel in the fold in 2016, he went back to a set-up role. He notched eight holds. If you're into shutdowns/meltdowns, he did well there as well - with 16 shutdowns against just four meltdowns (he did similarly well in 2015). But he also doesn't often pitch with the game on the line. The stat gmLI measures the average leverage index at the time a pitcher enters the game. Ross' gmLI was 1.05, slightly above average, but nothing to write home about. In fact, among Red Sox relievers who pitched at least 10 innings in 2016, it ranked eighth. This is reflective of Ross' role -- while he is good in high-leverage situations, he also has the flexibility to pitch more than an inning, so he often does so when the team simply needs a body on the mound, the game's outcome not in question. As a result, you'll likely not find much utility for Ross on your fantasy roster.

The Quick Opinion: If you can encapsulate a player in one word, for Robbie Ross Jr. that word would be "fine." Not fine in the sense of attractiveness, but rather in his performance. He is a guy you like having around, but who, for the most part, isn't going to be a big part of either a real or fantasy team's narrative.
