Profile: Friedrich, a former Rockies' draft pick, had somewhat of a breakout season for the hapless Padres. He was tasked with throwing nearly 130 innings of almost league-average ball (according to WAR). That's surprising, especially for a pitcher who doesn't have overpowering stuff. He got a bit lucky that his BABIP dropped to around league-average despite hitters pulling the ball ,more than they ever have against him and hitting it at the second-hardest rate of his career. Friedrich is penciled into the Padres' rotation to begin the season after they retained him via the arbitration process. He doesn't have a high fantasy upside despite playing in Petco Park because he doesn't miss enough bats. His swinging strike rate dropped almost 3 percent from the previous season and was the lowest of his career. He also allowed more contact than at any time of his career. His below-average FIP was acceptable for a back-of-the-rotation guy on a team like the Padres, but there is evidence that he got extremely lucky in 2016 to be as successful as he was. He had a 16.3 IFFB%, second in the majors to Marco Estrada (minimum 120 IP). It wouldn't be at all surprising to see that number rise significantly in 2017. (Dustin Nosler)

The Quick Opinion: A soft-tossing lefty, Friedrich started 23 of 24 games for the Padres in 2016. He filled the role of fungible starter for San Diego. He averaged just 5.6 innings per start, but he led all Padres' starters in innings pitched. It was a team that used 14 starting pitchers in 2016. He doesn't have much fantasy significance because he doesn't strike out enough hitters, walks a bit too many and got very lucky last season.
