Profile: Steven Wright was a revelation in 2016. Not a member of the starting rotation on Opening Day, Wright would go on to make 24 starts, putting up a 3.33 ERA and earning an All-Star bid. He pitched 156.2 innings, which is noteworthy when you consider that in his previous three major league seasons he had totaled just 107 innings pitched. But his season took an unfortunate turn when he injured himself on the base paths after Red Sox manager John Farrell foolishly inserted him into the game as a pinch runner on Aug. 7. To that point in his career, Wright had never been a major league base runner. He had hit a solitary line drive to shortstop two days earlier. That constituted all of the running on base paths Wright had done as a major leaguer to that point. That Farrell inserted him into the game as a pinch runner was, to be frank, a fireable offense. Wright would return to pitch twice toward the end of August, but after he allowed nine runs in 10 innings, raising his ERA from 3.01 to 3.33 in the process, it was clear that Wright wasn't right. He wouldn't pitch again. There was some hope that he would be available if the Red Sox advanced to the American League Championship Series, but Farrell's continued poor decision-making ensured that they didn't. Now, Wright is either the fifth starter or a bullpen arm - it's not clear how things will shake out at the back of the rotation for him or Drew Pomeranz. He'll probably start 10 or more games, but if he ends up in that swingman role (or exclusively in the bullpen) he probably won't be very valuable to your fantasy team.

The Quick Opinion: Is Steven Wright still in the rotation, or is he pitching out of the bullpen? There aren't a lot of unanswered questions about the Red Sox' 2017 roster - this question may be the biggest, and its outcome will go a long way to determining the knuckleballer's value. Conservatively, it's probably best to assume he will be a reliever or swingman.
