Profile: Peavy had actually found some success in San Francisco in the second half of 2014 and throughout 2015, but then The Great Home Run Spike of 2016 came and ravaged the pitching leaderboards. I’m sorry to report that Peavy’s ERA did not survive. He allowed 1.4 homers per nine, a level we hadn’t seen from him since 2003, his second season in the league. Worse yet is that it was paired with a career-worst 10.2 hits per nine, yielding a horrific 5.44 ERA/1.43 WHIP combo. He shifted to the bullpen for the final two months where he posted a 6.30 ERA, but five of his seven earned runs came in one outing so there’s a case to be made that he was better in relief. At the time of this writing, he is still a free agent. He will get signed somewhere (the Padres rumors have been the most persistent) , but it remains to be seen if the final chapter of his career will be as a reliever. The fastball was only popping at 91 MPH in relief so he’s unlikely to explode in that role and become a ninth-inning factor. He lacks any real fantasy relevance at this point. (Paul Sporer)

The Quick Opinion: Peavy was savaged by the home run surge and it forced a move into the bullpen where his base skills were better, but one blowup outing kept the ERA on the horrible side. His status is in flux both on the free agent market and in terms of role for 2017. That said, there isn’t a team and role combo that offer much fantasy value.
