Profile: More like Drew Frowny, am I right? ... No?... Smyly's 2016 campaign wasn't entirely lost. He did toss a career-high number of innings, finally qualifying for an ERA title that he couldn't have been farther from earning. He made adjustments during the season, eventually phasing out his changeup, easily his worst pitch, after the All-Star break. Yet sometimes polishing a turd only makes it shiny: his remaining secondary pitches failed to dazzle. Smyly deserves credit where it's due, though. He generated the sixth-best strand rate among all pitchers since his debut - up until last year, that is, when it unexpectedly ballooned into something uncontrollable. That he proceeded to draw the base runner-sequencing short straw either means he inherited the regression he finally deserved or he suffered some bad luck. There's top-of-the-rotation upside there — don't forget he had a 3.24 ERA and 3.62 xFIP in almost 400 innings prior to 2016 — but it comes with fragility and way too many fly balls. Still, his atrocious 2016 ERA has made unearthing the true Smyly an inexpensive risk in light of his upside. (Alex Chamberlain)

The Quick Opinion: Smyly suffered through an abominable 2016 campaign, although not entirely from a fault of his own. A pitcher who once thrived on stranding runners suddenly found himself completely unable. His down year has created a nifty buy-low opportunity for 2017.
