Moylan agreed to a minor league contract with the Royals on Friday with an invite to spring training, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com reports. (2/17/2017)
|Profile: Moylan is a bit of an undervalued reliever. His low strikeout rate (6.9 K's per nine in 2016) isn’t ideal. Neither is his 3.2 walks per nine from last season. What is great is his 62% ground ball rate, which was actually down from his 69% in 2015. The high ground ball rate helps to keep his ERA lower than his ERA estimators. His career ERA is 2.91 while his ERA estimators hover around 3.80. Several teams use high ground ball pitchers (e.g. Sam Dyson, Brad Ziegler, and Jeremy Jeffress) to effectively close, but no team is likely to use Moylan that way. Instead he is likely to be a middle reliever for Kansas City. (Jeff Zimmerman)|
The Quick Opinion: Moylan's high ground ball rate will make him a bullpen option even with undesirable walk and strikeout rates.
