Profile: The 2016 season was already going poorly for Hughes before a line drive off the bat of J.T. Realmuto ended his season. That originally wasn't expected to end Hughes' season, but rather cost him 6-to-8 weeks from the June 9 incident as he was diagnosed with a compression fracture above his left knee. Less than one month later, Hughes underwent successful surgery -- except it was to remove a rib to alleviate thoracic outlet syndrome. Hughes reported on Twitter in mid-January that he was throwing a bullpen, but it's still unclear if he'll be ready to start the season, though the widespread expectation is that he will be. Assuming he is, he's coming off posting a 5.95 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts). Hughes had pitched poorly enough to be moved to the bullpen in June — he was making his first relief appearance when he got hurt against the Marlins — but despite all of that, he will probably get another crack in the rotation, as he's owed $39.6 million over the next three seasons. It's fair to wonder if the issues addressed by the surgery plagued him in a subpar 2015 season — especially with how good he was in his first year in Minnesota in 2014 — but it's going to be very difficult to trust him at all in fantasy after his last two seasons of injuries and performance. If he can get anywhere close to his 2014 performance, he'll be a diamond in the rough. Otherwise, he might just be a plug-and-play option at best. (@Brandon_Warne)

The Quick Opinion: Hughes is coming off two rough seasons and a pair of brutal injuries for a pitcher. He'll be pretty far off the radar but shouldn't be completely left for dead. He pitches in a good home park for his repertoire and skill set and could still be useful moving forward if he proves to be fully healthy.
