Profile: Who's baseball's Three True Outcomes King the last three years? Probably Chris Davis, yeah? Or Chris Carter? Close, but not quite. It's actually Miguel Sano. But who's second? At this point, you probably know. Strikeouts, walks and home runs make up more than half his plate appearances. Unfortunately, home runs make up a significantly smaller portion of his three true outcomes than they do for the aforementioned names. His power prevents his bat from being completely incompetent — he has actually been 5% better than the league since his debut in 2009 — but his batting averages of late would make Mario Mendoza blush. His patience is admirable: only three hitters have swung at outside pitches less often than Avila since his debut. (Then again, only Carter has made less contact on such pitches than Avila during that time. At least he knows his weakness.) He's Chris Iannetta's long-lost brother, a defense-first catcher who isn't the strongest hitter but also ain't afraid of taking a free pass (or two (or eight)). A full season's worth of playing time in 2016 would have paced out to 2.5-ish WAR - impressive, yes, had he not hit so poorly that he lost his job to James McCann. After a year in Chicago, he returns to Detroit, presumably to assume his same backup role behind McCann. Even playing full-time, any employment of Avila would be defensible only in OBP-only leagues. Until then, he's not fantasy relevant. (Alex Chamberlain)

The Quick Opinion: Re-signed by the Tigers, Avila figures to relieve James McCann and doesn't figure to produce much value unless his batterymate gets injured. Even then, Avila's extreme strikeout problems make him a justifiable option only in AL-only OBP-based formats.
