Manny Slam

Won’t someone please tell Dodgers fans how angry and betrayed they’re supposed to feel about Manny Ramirez?

Note: link goes to shaky and kind of loud video of fans goin’ kind of crazy.

(Thanks to Hollywood Joe for the link. Wait — I once fought a pimp named Hollywood Joe following a disagreement related to a business transaction. You don’t suppose . . .)

I know you’re railing against those who want to rake Manny over the coals as their embodiment of all that is wrong with the game and society, but you can understand those who are upset with what Manny did, right?  He did break the rules.

Personally, I’m so numb to the accusations that I don’t know how I feel about the whole PED mess.

There’s also this great official video, including Scully’s call. He shuts up for a good 45 seconds. Pretty awesome to see. Makes you wish you could’ve been there.

What do you know? Not all Dodger fans are coked up, alcoholic, wanna-be porn stars. Some of them even like baseball.

I actually got the link from Dodger Thoughts, who got it from Tony Pierce, who got it from who knows where…

ah the internet, what did people do in those golden olden days when they were supposed to be working?

I guess with no internet, the 3 martini lunch and day baseball games make a lot more sense

Greg—I understand that people may be upset. I don’t understand people who don’t understand why most people aren’t.  This is mostly aimed at the Bill Plaschkes, by the way, who keep insisting that the fans should not be enjoying watching Ramirez play baseball. That last column he wrote about how mad the LA fans should have been for Manny not tipping their cap to him or whatever was plumb dumb.

I picked up the MLB Extra Innings package for a couple of years, and easily the best part was getting to listen to Scully call a game.  I loved the Game of the Week on NBC when I was growing up when he and Garagiola worked together.  The hardest thing for a play-by-play guy is knowing when to be quiet.

Personally, it made me sick, and not at all because of the PED matter. It made me sick because I have the clip of Manny leaving his bat on his shoulder as a pinch-hitter last season, while he was making every effort to get the Red Sox to trade him, as Rivera threw three straight down the middle of the plate with the game on the line.  It is the only time I have ever witnessed a player actively trying to hurt his own team during a game. I’m happy for the Dodgers that Manny is finally over his distain… Read more »

So as long as Plasche continues to be a jackass (no end in sight), we can expect more of this line of responses?  Ugh.  You want Plasche to move on, please set the example and leave little Bill to his ignorant, and ignored, perspective.  Your skill is wasted by continuing with this.

The only ones truly out of joint about steroids are sports columnists, sports-talk hosts, and the people who spend too much time reading and listening to them.

Most critical thinkers I’ve seen (like Craig) take a more balanced view.

And the average person: well, they don’t give a rip.

You know, in a real sense of it all, right now it has nothing to do with whether or not people like or dislike Manny Ramirez. It has to do with the fact that Dodger fans are Dodger fans…wanting them to win. Manny is NOT on PED’s right now, and yes, everyone was disappointed, but what is one supposed to do? Be pissed for the rest of the season at him? That’s stupid. It’s not like it’s going to help him learn a lesson anyways…no matter what, he’s still making millions, even after the Dodger organization saved millions because of… Read more »

Speaking of Plaschke, here’s his Twitter feed from last night (as posted on a BBTF thread): FIRST PITCH GRAND SLAM!!!OMG!!!! He crushed it over left-field fence. OMG. Dugout going crazy. Fans going nuts. OK, OK, I also got chills. OMG. He’s a cheat, but what a bat If Dodgers win World Series, this will be first defining moment of season Manny just did a second curtain call, a Dodger record. His first homer into Mannywood section. First Dodger to homer on his Bobblehead night Place is still buzzing. Fans now just standing in disbelief. I’m with them. ….. Just left… Read more »

Gotcha, Craig.

I haven’t read anything by Plaschke in years because I might drive to LA with a phone in my hand the whole time like Adam Sandler in “Punch Drunk Love,” except it wouldn’t end with words.  It would be more likely to end similar to the scene earlier in the movie after the goons hit his car with their truck and he gets the tire iron.  Great, great scene.

Really, this post was just an excuse to mention two terrific scenes in a very odd movie.  If you haven’t seen it, do so.
