Dave Cameron: Happy Game 5 Day everyone!

8:04
Dave Cameron: This should be a fun one.

8:04
Dave Cameron: And barring the most Nationals 9th inning ever, we’ll get another Game 5 tomorrow.

Total Votes: 273

8:10
Dave Cameron: For the record, I’m taking 4-6 on Sabathia’s outs.

8:11
This is lude-icris: 4 incredible hours to kick this day off! Let’s hope the nightcap is equally entertaining!

8:11
Zack: NYY fan…I am oddly totally calm…if Kluber comes out and is Kluber, how mad can I be? Been such a fun ride with so much promise going forward, too.

8:12
Todd Lindley: 1 out

8:12
Luber: green or gray first in relief?

8:12
Dave Cameron: Green

8:12
Dave Cameron: I doubt they use Gray unless one of the big four gets rocked.

8:12
David: Do you have any issues with Baker using Madson and Doolittle to get the last 6 outs with a 5 run lead and a game tomorrow? It strikes me as a cautious but reasonable decision.

8:13
Dave Cameron: Nope

8:13
Dave Cameron: They’ve barely pitched in a while.

8:13
J: Which team has improved their odds of winning compared to when the series started?

8:13
Dave Cameron: Yankees

8:14
druidiful: So is the FS1 strike zone just narrow or have the umpires been calling a wide zone all series?

8:14
Dave Cameron: Would guess it’s the rulebook zone.

8:14
Dave Cameron: The regular strike zone is a bit wider than the rulebook zone.

8:14
druidiful: DIDI!

8:14
ChatzMcGee: Crushed.

8:14
John Autin: whoopsie

8:14
Zack: CALL HIM SIR!

8:15
ChatzMcGee: Not  an ideal start for Kluber.

8:15
Factory of Sadness: Middle-middle on that home run…eesh

8:16
Jason: Easy to say now, but just feels like the Yankees are gonna spoil the Indians awesome year.

8:16
Mitchell: 27% hit probability

8:16
Luber: cashman got didi for shane green

8:16
Factory of Sadness: If you’re Tito, does somebody start warming now? Or is there another run or so of leash?

8:16
Dave Cameron: It’s Kluber. Leash is a lot longer.

8:16
Dave Cameron: They don’t have anyone down there besides Miller as good as Kluber first time through the order.

8:18
Dave Cameron: Okay, now that it’s a commercial, a quick aside on the afternoon game.

8:18
Dave Cameron: That was one of the best postseason pitching performances I’ve ever seen.

8:18
Dave Cameron: Strasburg’s change-up was insanely great. Reminiscent of ’99 Pedro Martinez.

8:19
Dave Cameron: I don’t know how much the under-the-weather thing was true, or the Nationals just telling stories, or whatever. But Strasburg has now thrown 19 postseason innings and allowed 1 earned run.

8:19
Dave Cameron: He’s endured a lot of crap for the Strasburg Shutdown thing and the Nats playoff failures.

8:20
Dave Cameron: But if there’s going to be a narrative about Strasburg in October now, it needs to be that he’s been nothing but awesome.

8:21
Dave Cameron: And the next time someone tells you that we can measure someone’s heart, character, or some other moral aspect of their being based on how they perform in the playoffs, tell that person to go jump in a lake.

8:21
Dave Cameron: Strasburg put the “soft” story in the ground today.

8:21
Dave Cameron: And everyone who pushed it the last few years should be embarrassed.

8:21
Dave Cameron: /end rant

8:22
John Autin: Yeah, but we still have the Kershaw narrative. :-)

8:22
Nelson: What about the Kershaw and Price playoff underperformance story?

8:22
Dave Cameron: All of it is BS.

8:23
Dave Cameron: Great players are great players. They are great players because they’ve already proven they can play under pressure.

8:23
Dave Cameron: No one plays in October if they can’t handle pressure.

8:23
Mattingly’s Sideburns: I know batting lineups make a minimal difference but having Werth and Kipnis bat 2nd seems less than ideal.

8:23
Dave Cameron: Yeah, batting order is overrated, but these are not great decisions.

8:24
Hello Dave: Did Jose Ramirez get replaced by the RP from the Braves?

8:24
Julio Pepper: CC lookin sharp.

8:24
weezy: it’s amazing how mediocre the Indians lineup looks right now

8:24
Jesse: In the case of Werth the bigger issue is that he’s starting in the first place.

8:26
Sterling Mallory Chris Archer: I’m not sure how I feel about these live blogs. I’m in the chats at work but now I feel like I should be working.

8:26
Mike: This is an excellent day as a Dodger fan, the Cubs used Lester for 55 pitches and now the Nats will play a game 5 with a so-so starter and the ability to use Scherzer in relief.   Whoever wins will have a wrecked NLCS rotation.

8:26
Dave Cameron: Yup.

8:26
Dave Cameron: Scherzer is 100% pitching tomorrow.

8:26
Dave Cameron: I’d guess it goes Gio/Scherzer/Madson/Doolittle, and everyone else watches.

8:26
Zack: I’m pro-bullpenning, but if (IF!) CC looks like this in the 3rd, I can’t take him out.

8:27
Dave Cameron: I’d let him get up to 9 outs.

8:27
Dave Cameron: If he goes up 9, 9 down, I’m still not letting him face Lindor unless they’re up 10 or something.

8:27
Jabroni: That’s a bold prediction considering Dusty is making the decisions.

8:28
Dave Cameron: Dusty takes too much crap. He pulled Scherzer at the right time in Game 3, pulled Stras at the right time in Game 4.

8:28
Dave Cameron: He does some dumb stuff, but he’s not an idiot.

8:29
Bobert: Who do the Yankees go to first after CC?

8:29
Dave Cameron: Green, probably

8:29
Dave Cameron: I’d guess it goes Green/Kahnle/Robertson/Chapman

8:29
Factory of Sadness: Is there any manager that doesn’t do some dumb stuff?

8:29
Dave Cameron: Nope

8:29
Sterling Mallory Chris Archer: What if CC looked like he was on his very top game putting down 9 straight? How big is the difference between 4th inning CC vs the next reliever in?

8:29
Dave Cameron: History shows “being on your game” isn’t really predictive.

8:30
Dave Cameron: And CC is just not at the level of any of NYY’s RPs

8:30
Zack: A non-zero reason I’m nervous about pulling CC is I really think Girardi will use Jaime Garcia at some point and I’ll be under the desk

8:30
Dave Cameron: I doubt you see Garcia today unless the game goes 132 innings

8:31
Bobert: Why doesn’t Girardi seem to trust Betances anymore?  That slurve is deadly.

8:31
Dave Cameron: He worked his way back into the circle of trust, then he threw like 5 pitches to the backstop in Game 4.

8:31
Tommy toms: What manager does the least dumb stuff?

8:31
Dave Cameron: Dave Roberts

8:32
Geoff Williams: If all the Yankees pitchers were fresh, and CC was out of the bullpen (Severino starting), where would you rank him? Chap, Green, Robertson, Kahnle ahead of him. Anyone else?

8:32
Dave Cameron: Betances, Warren, Gray

8:33
HappyFunBall: Can you imagine how much grief Dusty would get if he pulled a pitcher in the middle of an at bat, and the new guy gave up a grand slam? Not saying it was the wrong move, just that we seem to fit a lot of narratives to our perceptions. Dusty’s had a fine series. The Nats have won when they scored more than a single run.

8:33
Daniel Cabrera Is Valuable: If CC is 9 up 9 down Girardi should take CC out, but will he?

8:33
Dave Cameron: Probably not

8:33
Zack: Who would you start tomorrow if you were the Nats?

8:33
Dave Cameron: Gio

8:34
Zack: I’m not saying Ellsbury is in the lineup to draw a catcher’s interference, but he isn’t in there to NOT draw a catcher’s interference.

8:36
Tommy toms: If roark = gio, why start gio on short rest?

8:36
Dave Cameron: Gio will be full rest tomorrow.

8:36
Joe: Hahaha!

8:36
ChatzMcGee: Ha! He did it!

8:36
Luber: HE DID IT. INTERFERENCE !

8:36
HappyFunBall: Amazing!

8:36
HankLloydWright: ZACK IS A PSYCHIC

8:36
druidiful: Catchers interference!

8:36
John Autin: INTERFERENCE!

8:36
Mattingly’s Sideburns: ZACK I NEED THE LOTTO NUMBERS

8:36
ChatzMcGee: Zack nails it.

8:36
Evan: When will they ever learn?

8:36
Zack: Full credit:

Ellsbury is about due for a catcher’s interference…
12 Oct 2017
8:37
weezy: this might be in the top 3 most commented events from this game

8:37
John Autin: Fray-zhuh missed a hang-uh.

8:38
Bobert: These chats make baseball more enjoyable, if that’s possible.

8:38
Nelson: Thank you Edwin for coming back. I couldnt take another Brantley AB

8:38
kevinthecomic: here comes edwin — any chance he can put enough weight on his ankle to hit effectively?

8:38
Dave Cameron: They wouldn’t start a bat-only guy if he couldn’t hit.

8:40
deananna: CC should sweep the leg here.

8:40
Dave Cameron: Okay, Dean Anna. Maybe you didn’t have an MLB career because of your black heart.

8:41
kevinthecomic: so, the yankees already have cc sabathia and didi gregorius, if they could sign bb king and ee cummings, they would have all of the cup sizes covered

8:41
John Autin: Edwin-CC matchup is his most career PAs without a homer. (Yeah, I quoted BFP matchup stats!)

8:41
Sharp: Just gotta get their electronics from hh Gregg

8:42
Motown oden: They need aa Milne

8:42
Shaun: Wouldn’t they need aa Milne, as well?

8:42
Nelson: AA milne too

8:42
E: I can’t believe EE is walking

8:42
Mattingly’s Sideburns: Kevinthecomic hasn’t spent enough time on the internet if he thinks cup sizes end at EE

8:42
druidiful: Did Francona just grab seeds out of the coach’s hood next to him?

8:43
noseeum: RE can’t believe EE is walking.  He’s not he’s striking out.

8:43
Dave Cameron: I only have two outs left on my CC vote.

8:43
Dave Cameron: Can’t say it’s looking good so far.

8:44
sam: please do a game chat for NLDS game 5 tomorrow

8:44
Dave Cameron: We will

8:44
Alex: My heart can’t take a game like this. Can Fangraphs do a piece on heart attacks by fanbase in do or die games?

8:45
Dave Cameron: HIPAA won’t let us

8:45
Bobert: Will we have game chats for all WS games?

8:45
Dave Cameron: Yup

8:45
Zack: Heart attack guess:
By volume, NYY
By severity, CLE or CHC

8:45
Glenn : Will there be pizza at any time during the chats?

8:45
Dave Cameron: Are you buying?

8:46
ChatzMcGee: Yeah, we getting more CC.

8:46
Jason: CC is gonna go 6-7 and not give up a run.

8:46
8:47
noseeum: No way CC goes past 6, but I expect him to go 5 unless something goes wrong.  Girardi will give him the shot at the W at least.  Of course, something could definitely go wrong.

8:47
Dave Cameron: Not if the game is close.

8:48
Dave Cameron: They’re not going to push CC when his pitch count elevates and they have so many other options.

8:48
Mitchell: For what it’s worth, Jackson saw four pitches, none of which were in the FS1 strike zone. We’ve established that it’s smaller than the actual called zone, which begs the question, why wouldn’t they use the actual zone?

8:48
Dave Cameron: “Actual zone” is somewhat nebulous and depends on the umpire/catcher/pitcher combo.

8:48
Dave Cameron: Easier to just use standard dimensions than tweak it every game.

8:49
Anonymous: As an engineer: quit makin’ work, Mitchell.

8:49
Joe: Which player in tonight’s game is most likely to go in the HOF?

8:49
Dave Cameron: Fun question

8:49
Dave Cameron: Chapman, probably?

8:50
Dave Cameron: CC is a borderline candidate given how high the standards for SP are right now.

8:50
Dave Cameron: Easier for an RP to get in. And Chapman’s one of the most dominant RPs ever.

8:50
brad: Just too early to say Lindor?

8:51
Dave Cameron: Yeah.

8:51
noseeum: That’s a damn shame.  CC is a hall of famer, but I agree the voting currently says he’s borderline.  Hoping that changes by the time he’s up for vote.

8:51
Dave Cameron: At some point, the bar has to come down.

8:51
Dave Cameron: Or we’re just never going to put SPs in again.

8:51
Mark: Is Kluber too late of a bloomer?

8:51
Dave Cameron: Yeah

8:52
David: More HOF worth: Sabathia or Mussina?

8:52
Dave Cameron: Moose, easy.

8:52
Bobert: If CK22 was injured for the rest of his career, he’d get into the HOF easily right?

8:52
Dave Cameron: Yeah, probably.

8:53
Department of Silliness: CK22 is not an acceptable nickname.

8:53
Aaron Judge: Any particular reason I keep striking out?

8:53
Dave Cameron: These are good pitchers.

8:54
ChatzMcGee: Record setting is Judge’s forte.

8:54
Aaron Judge: welp

8:54
Anonymous: Aaron Judge struck out over 200 times this year, breaking the rookie record.  Do not be surprised when he strikes out against the best pitchers on the planet

8:55
Anthony: Someone needs to explain the difference between Zone% and O-Swing% to Matt Vasgersian…

8:55
Hello Dave: The Didi game

8:55
Dr Evil: Is Didi an extension candidate (2-3 FA years)?

8:56
druidiful: Sir Didi again!

8:56
ChatzMcGee: Didi out there playing hero ball.

8:56
HankLloydWright: Dave you forgot that Gregorious is an obvious Hall of Famer

8:56
John Autin: Double your pleasure, Didi!

8:56
A.: Didi is awesome

8:56
Tommy toms: Did to the HOF!

8:56
J: Greglorious!!!!!!!

8:56
ChatzMcGee: Wow…

8:56
Cleveland Indians : Am I going to be memed again

8:56
Hello Dave: lol baseball is random as shit

8:57
Josh: Best Yankee shortstop ever

8:57
Jim Golderman: Jeterwho

8:57
A.: Kluber doesn’t have his good command today, again. Fastball ran out over the middle to Gardy and then a cement mixer slider to Didi

8:58
Glenn : Re18pect

8:58
Zack:

Didi Gregorious has more multi-HR postseason games than Derek Jeter (1)
12 Oct 2017
8:59
Shaun: Does your leash for CC extend at all now?

8:59
Dave Cameron: Nope.

8:59
E: What would you have said if before the series I told you the Yankees would put up 9 runs in 6 innings off kluber?

8:59
Dave Cameron: You can’t predict baseball.

9:00
Josh: I think we all expected the Indians would win the series as long as they could survive starting Kluber

9:01
Radical Ryan: Time for Cle to go to the bullpen?

9:01
Dave Cameron: I’d probably stick with Kluber second time through the order.

9:01
Dave Cameron: But I wouldn’t let him face top of the order again.

9:01
Jw: Did winning their way into the #1 seed in the AL and therefore drawing the red hot Yankees actually hurt Cleveland? I. E. Would it have been better to face Boston…

9:01
Dave Cameron: Yeah, probably.

9:04
Evan: Does “CC has pitched better when his team has the lead” mean his team hasn’t had the lead when he has pitched poorly?

9:04
Dave Cameron: Funny how that works.

9:04
Max: If he wants to, will C.C. be able to find a two year deal in the offseason?

9:04
Dave Cameron: Yeah

9:05
Joe: That grass is dead.

9:05
Luber: what an athlete CC!

9:05
E: Lol who is pitching for the Yankees and why can’t the Indians hit him?

9:05
ChatzMcGee: So, uh, how is CC actually 21 years old again?

9:05
C.C. Sabathia: Is that the most athletic play of my career?

9:05
Jonathan: Wonder if CC will change his stance on bunting now

9:06
druidiful: I wonder if that divot is going to come into play on a ground ball later.

9:07
Mike: So when you said you thought the Dodgers have the best chance of the WS at this point, is that just due to already being in the NLCS where they are favored over either CHC or WAS, or do you think they’re favored against Cleveland or Houston or NYY?

In other words, is it an likelihood of playing in the series or an actual advantage once they’re there in your mind?  Fangraphs and 538 projections both have them as underdogs to the the AL

9:07
Dave Cameron: I think they’re the best team in baseball, and the first round sweep gives them a nice rest advantage heading forward.

9:08
Dave Cameron: Any team already in an LCS is more likely to win it all than a team still in the DS too.

9:08
Joe: So, Dave, you would really, as manager, pull CC now?

9:08
Dave Cameron: Yes.

9:08
Dave Cameron: Assuming I could get buy in from the players on the move.

9:08
Dave Cameron: If it caused the locker room to revolt, then no.

9:08
Steve O: For who?

9:09
Dave Cameron: I’d go Green for 2, Robertson for 2, Chapman for 2, Kahnle if anyone got in trouble.

9:09
Joe: Aren’t the odds that one of those 4 guys doesn’t have it?

9:10
Dave Cameron: No.

9:10
Dave Cameron: Despite people making this claim regularly, there’s no evidence that this is a thing.

9:10
Nick: if you’re pulling CC right now you’d be burned by the NY media if they lose

9:11
Dave Cameron: If you’re managing to the media response, you’re doing it wrong.

9:12
J. Girardi: but Dave, aren’t you the media?

9:12
Dave Cameron: They shouldn’t do it to make me happy either!

9:12
Tommy toms: Sure there is. Assuming “having it” is independent between pitchers. The probability of one not having it increases quickly by pitcher. If we assume 50% probability of each pitcher “having it” that means 12.5% chance all 3 pitchers do.

9:13
Dave Cameron: You’ve invented a fiction that pitchers “don’t have it” regularly.

9:13
GDUB: For the question “aren’t the odd that one of those guys doesn’t have it”  Is the answer more accuratly just that the odds of one of them not having it is not greater than the odds of CC not having it in his next inning?

9:13
Dave Cameron: Nope. Data on this is pretty clear.

9:14
Joe: What about the chance that there is just something about CC tonight that the Indians aren’t seeing well?

9:14
Dave Cameron: What about the chances the flying spaghetti monster wants the Indians tow in?

9:14
noseeum: Is there researching showing an SP who goes a perfect 3 innings is likely to sh*t the bed in the 4th?  I just think you’re being a little extreme here.  We all get the point and agree: Use your bullpen.  But isn’t there something to be said for having even more of an advantage if you only need 5 or 4 innings from the pen rather than 6?

9:15
Dave Cameron: Early game performance is noise, not signal.

9:15
Dave Cameron: You shouldn’t really change your strategy much based on what your SP is doing.

9:15
Dave Cameron: Unless he’s throwing 5 mph slower or something.

9:16
Factory of Sadness: “When the pitcher does X, they’re 21 games ulcer .500. When the pitcher does not-X, somehow they’re 21 games under .500!!! It’s incredible!” -Matt Vasgersian

9:16
Hello Dave: What the hell is Matt talking about?

9:16
J: Lol this broadcast

9:16
Evan: I know criticizing the announcers has become a bit trite, but this is some grade A BS that they are shoveling about long pitching outings and winning percentage.

9:16
Springer am Rand: Isn’t this “winning percentage when starter goes X” stuff on the broadcast just mistaking correlation for causation?

9:16
Mike: Matt is speaking literal flaming garbage into the air to confuse people everywhere.

9:17
druidiful: When your pitcher pitches well, the team generally does well.

9:18
M. Vasgersian: This will be controversial, but when you score more runs than the opposing team, you tend to win

9:18
Dewey: Are they arguing that Kluber should stay in just because?  He certainly is not pitching well enough to stay in.

9:18
Dave Cameron: They just don’t understand baseball in 2017.

9:20
Dewey: I understand why they are hesitant to take out CC, but they can see Kluber is laboring.  If they weren’t so interested in making a point today, they would be supporting taking Kluber out of the game.

9:20
E: It shouldn’t even pass the sniff test, so if both starters go 6 innings does that mean both teams have a .650 winning percentage?

9:20
J: Kluber worn out or just weird baseball?

9:20
Dave Cameron: Weird baseball.

9:21
Dave Cameron: Matt Vasgersian still pushing this as a “bullpen game”, not understanding Miller can go 2-3, Allen can go 2, and hey, that’s the game.

9:23
Joe: So, we know what you think Girardi SHOULD do with CC, but what do you think he WILL do?

9:23
Dave Cameron: He pitches until there’s guys on.

9:23
Dave Cameron: Probably 2 guys.

9:24
Eddie Vedder: Indians’ plan was probably something like Kluber 5/Miller 2/Allen 2, no? So this isn’t *that* far off from the original plan. (Other than the score)

9:24
Dave Cameron: Yep.

9:24
Dave Cameron: Maybe they let Kluber go 6 if he was dominating, but probably 5+ was the hope.

9:25
Greg Golden: How early does Fangraphs go to the ‘pen tonight?  Lotta live chats for Cameron this month.

9:25
Dave Cameron: This is my last one for a little while.

9:25
Dave Cameron: I’m going to make someone else do tomorrow, then we’ll take a break from them for the first parts of the LCSes.

9:26
a different matt: See?  Shoulda taken CC out.

9:26
Doctor Laptop: Dave you predicted this exact scenario aha. CC allows a hit, I see the camera pan to the ‘pen.

9:26
Dave Cameron: It’s not rocket science.

9:26
Dave Cameron: Season on the line, insanely great bullpen well rested; you can’t let your SP get lit up.

9:27
ChatzMcGee: Kipnis gonna K though

9:27
John Autin: Kipnis batting 2nd against a lefty has never been a good plan.

9:27
Tommy toms: Is it hard to get staff to sign up for these chats? A couple nights ago no one could do the late game

9:27
Dave Cameron: The traffic on those late games is just not worth the time commitment.

9:28
Lachlan: How many people are in here now Dave?

9:28
Dave Cameron: ~600

9:28
Zock Jr.: Think Cora has a real shot at the Farrell’s job? As a Sox fan, I’d love that

9:28
Dave Cameron: Cora is 100% getting one of these jobs.

9:29
Dave Cameron: He might get to pick where he goes.

9:29
John Autin: Wow, CC.

9:29
Angel Hernandez: This strike zone is abysmal.

9:30
E: That wasn’t a strike?

9:30
druidiful: I hope Joe goes to the pen now, he got 4 great innings out of CC.

9:30
ChatzMcGee: Yikes

9:30
Phil: Wow that’s a friendly strike.

9:30
a different matt: Locating pretty well, huh….

9:30
Lachlan: Says you Angel

9:30
Andre: CC is getting the strike zone Bauer got game 1

9:30
John: Called strike off the plate…of course he’s never looked better, Vasgersian…

9:31
Shaun: Not a bad zone to have as a pitcher…

9:31
Jake: Its been a wide strike zone but its been pretty consistantly wide.

9:32
Dave Cameron: These are borderline strikes, but this isn’t Livan Hernandez or anything.

9:32
J: Framing yall.  Give the Kraken his due

9:32
druidiful: Kluber seemed to be getting those same calls on the side edges, he was just not able to hit them as much.

9:33
A.: Surely there’s still the argument that you have to adapt to the zone and protect with 2 strikes, it was a great pitch regardless

9:33
Dave Cameron: And recognize that Sanchez is a good framer.

9:34
Zack: But Dave! He’s bad defensively! NARRATIVE!!!

9:34
Gary Bonds Sanchez: To CC’s last slider looked like it could have crossed the back of the plate but shows as a ball since the k-zone graphic covers the front of the plate

9:34
Dave Cameron: Right. The strike zone is 3D, these graphics are all 2D.

9:34
Slider: Indians fan here, give me hope Dave

9:35
Dave Cameron: Rajai Davis homered off Chapman last year.

9:35
Dave Cameron: Anything can happen.

9:35
a different matt: 3 runs are not a lot.

9:35
noseeum: RE hope for Indians fans, see game two.

9:36
Hello Dave: 3 runs is a lot against this bullpen

9:36
E: Gardner is going work Miller out of the game

9:37
That Guy: Miller has looked mortal this series. Is he worse than usual, is the Yankees offense just that formidable, or just noise?

9:37
Dave Cameron: The latter two

9:38
ZWalt Guild Delegate: Counterpoint on Hope: Sabathia has more Ks through 4 than he’s had in a game since May.

9:38
Zack: This the tallest B vs P matchup in history? lol

9:38
Dave Cameron: Randy Johnson had to have faced Tony Clark

9:38
Luber: that was the worst called strike of the night

9:39
A.: CC having that many Ks is also a point for “anything can happen”

9:39
A. Judge: I couldn’t have hit that second strike with an oar…

9:39
druidiful: I don’t blame Judge for striking out so much when he is getting strikes called that low.

9:39
Andre: A major reason Judge has struggled this series is the ridiculous strike zone he’s gotten

9:39
Dave Cameron: Sounds like a post idea….

9:40
druidiful: Didi only hit a single? Bum.

9:40
Hello Dave: Mr. October 11th

9:41
Zack: Tony Clark: 4-11, 6 K, HR vs Randy Johnson

9:41
A.: I’d say the biggest reason judge has struck out a lot is because he strikes out a lot and the Indians pitchers strike people out a lot, might just be me

9:42
noseeum: I understand the Judge complaints, but I’d love to hear from umpires on this.  They have a hard enough job, how can we expect them to so significantly adjust the low end of the zone for one hitter?  PS: we should use technology for calling balls and strikes.

9:42
Kevin: Also maybe worst matchup for Judge in terms of entire opposing staff. Lots of power righties with good-great breaking stuff AND command.

9:43
Hello Dave: Technology isn’t even good enough to give a decent broadcast strike zone and you guys want it actually calling real strikes and balls?

9:43
Longo: tech strikes would still require a human to judge where the strike zone starts and stops for each person each at bat…

9:44
YKnotDisco?!: Jon Rauch vs Richie Sexson may have happened before.

9:44
Dave Cameron: Fun fact: Richie Sexson and I live in the same town.

9:44
Dave Cameron: A few months ago, he apparently almost got in a fight at a little league game because his team had some players ruled ineligible.

9:45
Dave Cameron: I don’t think I’d want to be the one to tell Richie Sexson that his kid can’t play…

9:45
That guy from France: Hi Dave in today’s chat, you said that boston red sox analytical department is one of the less funded, and one of the less staffed. Who would you say is the most funded, and crowded ?

9:45
Dave Cameron: Dodgers.

9:45
Dave Cameron: It’s huge.

9:45
Dave Cameron: They have more PhDs than most teams have analysts.

9:46
Matt: If the Yankees go on to win this series and let’s say beat the Astros and Dodgers. Would that be the toughest/most impressive playoff run of all time?

9:46
Dave Cameron: Maybe!

9:46
Zack: Are we allowed to pause the bullpen discussion and acknowledge how incredible Sabathia is right now

9:47
John Autin: CC ties his postseason high, 9 Ks.

9:47
capconstrained: How do the Yanks rank in analytics?  Also how large is the biggest FO in terms of headcount?

9:47
Dave Cameron: Yankees have a ton of analysts and their FO is huge.

9:48
druidiful: I’ve been rooting to bring in arms from the pen, but I am enjoying CC right now.

9:48
Bruce: I forget, is the times through the order thing, more a pitcher getting tired, or hitters learning and adapting?

9:48
Dave Cameron: No one really knows for sure. Some of both, probably.

9:49
Lunar verLander: There was a rumor a few months ago that one baseball team had rented / bought a supercomputer cluster. Did anyone ever find out who that was?

9:49
Dave Cameron: That happened a few years ago.

9:49
Dave Cameron: I’ve heard a few guesses but never confirmation on what team did that.

9:49
John Autin: Heat ’em up!

9:50
druidiful: Go to Green, go to Green now!

9:50
Phil: Well, that’s 2 base runners and he’s still there…

9:50
ChatzMcGee: You get him now?

9:50
Dave Cameron: Yup.

9:50
noseeum: yes, get him now.

9:50
a different matt: definitely.  right now

9:50
Mr Chet: Not yet

9:50
Post malone: Leave him in

9:50
Mattingly’s Sideburns: Roberto Perez is the best worst hitter ever so this should be fun

9:51
Shaun: Please get him!

9:51
Post malone: Now get him

9:51
Brad: Please keep him in

9:51
Green: Sorry guys, I chose 16+ in the survey and plan to see that go through

9:52
John Autin: MEATBALL. Get him NOW.

9:52
a different matt: how long does it take to warmup

9:52
J: Yeah let’s wait until the guy fails to take him out that makes sense

9:52
This is lude-icris: Best worst hitter ever!

9:52
CJ: WHY??

9:52
Joe: That’s pretty shameful for Girardi to let this happen.

9:52
Rosin Bag: Manager malpractice

9:53
Matt: i don’t get what Girardi is doing here

9:53
Andre: CC should not be facing this batter.

9:54
John Farrell: This is good managing.

9:54
Bernie Williams is my Father: finally!

9:54
Man: Girardi may be trying to get fired

9:54
teddy: what is girardi doing? that is very poor managing

9:54
gibs: What is Giardi doing

9:54
Joe G.: should I take him out now?

9:54
Matt: Maybe Girardi really does want out of NY

9:54
Paul G.: Well, that escalated quickly.

9:54
Paint the Black: Inexcusable from Girardi. Absolutely awful.

9:54
Rosin Bag: I predicted 3 base runners and 1 run this’s inning. I guess I underestimated in both counts

9:55
This is lude-icris: New ballgame!

9:55
Crusty: Heavens to Besty.

9:55
Joe: Somebody explain what Girardi was thinking…trying to get CC the win or something?

9:55
Dave Cameron: I have no idea.

9:55
GiambisGoldThong: One batter too late ughhh

9:55
Dave Cameron: One?

9:56
RIch: Should have been out second hit of that inning

9:56
Dave Cameron: I said all day you take him out as soon as there are two runners on.

9:56
Dave Cameron: That Girardi didn’t do that, in the 5th inning, was a huge failure on his part.

9:56
TKDC: If they’d just stuck with Sabathia through 6 innings, they’d surely win. Math!

9:57
Luber: 16+ was so close

9:57
Adam: He wasn’t getting Robertson up at start of inning (neither should he have been) so it would be impractical to take CC out after 2nd batter got on

9:57
Dave Cameron: That’s his fault.

9:57
ZWalt Guild Delegate: I mean, there’s 2 batters on *now*

9:57
nickg: Girardi’s management there didn’t even make sense in old school thinking.

9:57
Joe G: Robertson should have been up the second Sabathia allowed one hit.

9:58
Dave Cameron: You have someone throwing at the start of the inning. They’re all getting used today.

9:58
John Farrell: You need to show faith in your ace. That’s why you don’t get anyone up in the pen until it’s too late.

9:58
Chuckb: That pitch was several inches outside.

9:58
Matt: worst strike call of the night whoa

9:58
a different matt: ok, now THAT’s a wide strike…

9:59
Andre: It’s almost like the Yankees bullpen is…. effective

9:59
Paint the Black: big time DP

9:59
John: Lucky DP ball. Hesitation almost helped Lindor beat it out.

9:59
Cashman: Wow, a reliever was better. Who knew?

9:59
Will: Andrew Miller’s season high pitch count is 35 in a 1 inning April appearance against Houston. He’s at 27 now. How high can he go?

9:59
Dave Cameron: He went 50 something last year, I think?

9:59
Dave Cameron: I’d guess 40ish.

10:00
Moonlight Graham: Why don’t we just call this the Yankee chat, and not the ALDS chat?

10:00
Dave Cameron: Do you have something else you’d like to talk about?

10:00
Crusty: East coast chat bias!

10:01
Dave Cameron: From the guy who lives in Oregon!

10:01
John Autin: The opening poll showed more folks rooting for Cleveland.

10:01
Juan: Was CC not just BABIP’d out of the game?

10:02
Dave Cameron: Sure, but he’s also the Yankees 8th best pitcher or something.

10:02
Dave Cameron: They have guys who don’t get BABIP’ed because they strike everyone out.

10:02
Dave Cameron: Use those guys instead.

10:03
AdamZ: Can’t babip if you don’t give up bips.

10:03
Dave Cameron: Of course it’s come down to a battle of the bullpens, you ninnies.

10:03
Dave Cameron: It’s an elimination game.

10:03
Dave Cameron: Have you watched any baseball the last two weeks?

10:04
Nick R: Bet dusty let’s his starter go atleast 5 tomorrow

10:04
Dave Cameron: Nah, not with Scherzer around.

10:04
Dave Cameron: Gio goes 3-4.

10:04
Dave Cameron: Scherzer goes 2-3.

10:04
Cowdisciple: Yeah, but Dusty’s bullpen is kind of bad.

10:05
Dave Cameron: Scherzer/Madson/Doolittle is elite.

10:05
Longo: What could MLB ever do about the postseason being so different from the regular season? Usage of relievers is so much different its a different game.

10:05
Dave Cameron: Fewer off days.

10:06
Dave Cameron: Can only do this because of all the travel days in October.

10:06
Rizdak: Isn’t tv revenue involved though

10:07
Dave Cameron: Yep. They won’t reduce the number of off days, but that’s the main driver of the differences in the playoffs.

10:07
John Autin: I think MLB also *wants* to have more stars involved, rather than 4th starters and middling relievers.

10:07
Dave Cameron: Yeah, I don’t think they see this as any kind of problem.

10:07
Tonights Ump: That’s a strike! This is a strike! You’re a strike! I’m a strike!

10:08
RIch: Chase Headley chases Miller from the game.

10:08
Braves Fan :: It makes the games alot longer tho

10:08
Dave Cameron: Which means more ad slots.

10:08
Dave Cameron: They care about game length in the regular season.

10:08
Dave Cameron: I don’t think they care much in the postseason.

10:08
Fantasy Dynasty: 39 pitches for Miller. Good call, Dave.

10:08
Carlos Carrasco: Can I pitch tonight?

10:09
Dave Cameron: I would guess everyone is available tonight.

10:09
Eddie Vedder: Is Francona really taking his best reliever out because of “Chase Headley’s success against Miller?”

10:09
Dave Cameron: More about Miller wearing down than Headley being scary.

10:09
Noah: Why are the Indians not using Salazar more?  Like right now?

10:10
E: Is Shaw good?

10:10
Dave Cameron: Yes.

10:10
ZWalt Guild Delegate: I’m not going to draw the comparison, but now seems a useful-enough excuse to share Jeff’s piece about Livan 1996 https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/lets-consider-eric-gregg-and-livan-her…

10:11
Braves Fan :: Forgot Shaw throws that hard

10:11
Dave Cameron: Everyone throws this hard now.

10:11
Bagel: Do you get a slotted time off from baseball after the postseason ends?

10:11
Dave Cameron: Free agency starts 5 days after the postseason ends.

10:11
E: does everyone here have an uncle that looks like Bryan Shaw?

10:12
Hello Dave: I have an aunt

10:12
Frank: Everyone’s uncle throws 97 with a wipeout slider now

10:12
Ryan: Will Chapman close two innings if the score holds up?

10:12
Dave Cameron: Yeah, probably.

10:12
Dave Cameron: At this point, it’s probably Robertson for the 6th and maybe the 7th if he’s rolling, then Chapman for 8/9.

10:13
Dave Cameron: Kahnle probably cleans up for Robertson if he can’t finish 7.

10:13
gajklgj: FS1’s gun is +3, Trackman has Shaw sitting at 93-94

10:13
Dave Cameron: Well that’s not true at all.

10:14
noseeum: Well regardless of what happens to the Yanks now, I won’t be able to sleep after that scary zombie I need your help commercial.

10:14
Peter: So that was the weirdest commercial I’ve ever seen

10:14
John: What is up with these damn Fox Halloween commercials?!

10:14
Matt: what in the world commercial was that

10:14
Joe: Seriously!

10:14
Ryan: same wtf was that

10:14
Bean: Dave, no chad green?

10:14
Dave Cameron: I think CC pitched Green’s innings.

10:14
Jason: I am never going to Fox.com ever again

10:15
Noah: Why go with only Robertson/Chapman rather than shorter outings of all 4 elite relievers (Kahnle, Robertson, Chapman, Green)

10:16
Dave Cameron: Because if your burn all four and the game goes to extras, you then have to go with worse arms.

10:16
Dave Cameron: In a 3-2 game, you can’t assume it only goes 9.

10:16
Post malone: No chance for green or dellin?

10:17
Dave Cameron: Green probably the 10th inning guy now.

10:17
Dave Cameron: Dellin the 23rd inning guy.

10:17
Luber: id bring didi in to pitch before dellin

10:17
Fat Matt: Dellin should be nowhere near this game

10:17
Mac: Position player 22nd inning

10:17
John Autin: Hard to win a series when your 1-4 hitters go 9 for 75 with 1 HR.

10:18
deananna: PFP: Pitchers fielding practice

10:18
ReggieBar: Only 8 pitches so far for D-Rob, he can take the 7th too?

10:18
Dave Cameron: Yup.

10:18
Dave Cameron: This low-pitch inning is best case for NYY.

10:18
Post malone: Can dellin get back in the mix (assuming NYY advances) or is he a write off for the rest of the year?

10:19
Dave Cameron: He got himself back into the mix earlier this series, then pitched himself back out of it last game. There’s still time for him to get back into the circle of trust, but it will take a few good outings now.

10:19
Paint the Black: 9 pitches, 5 outs. Couldn’t ask for more if you’re NYY

10:19
gajklgj: The collective roar of a home crowd after a deep fly ball is amazing

10:19
Andrew: FOX CALM URSELF WITH THESE ADS

10:20
Tyler: Why isn’t Chad Green being considered?  He was statistically the Yankee’s best pitcher this year.

10:20
Dave Cameron: Girardi is a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately guy.

10:20
Dave Cameron: Green gave up the bomb to Lindor

10:20
@RationalMLBfan: Robertson gets another inning, right?

10:20
Dave Cameron: For sure.

10:20
Crusty: You don’t know who David S. Pumpkins is, do you?  The kids know, Dave!  The kids know!!!

10:21
Dave Cameron: I have never heard of David S. Pumpkins.

10:21
Tyler: Do you agree with that approach?

10:21
Dave Cameron: No, he’s too reactive for my tastes.

10:21
Dave Cameron: But when you have this many great arms, it’s not as big a problem.

10:21
Dave Cameron: If recency bias shifts you from one dominant reliever to another, eh, still dominant reliever.

10:22
noseeum: OMG you must google David S. Pumpkins

10:22
Dave Cameron: /googles. Oh, an SNL skit. I won’t find this funny. Clicks the X.

10:22
Nick R: Isn’t recency bias kinda prevalent in baseball though

10:22
Dave Cameron: Yup.

10:23
David: [pushes up glasses] uh, they’re called sketches, Dave

10:23
CJ: Although I’m pretty p**sed at Girardi now, he also is not afraid to ‘promote’ relievers instead of wearing out the ones he trusts, I thought.

10:24
Paint the Black: thanks Vasgergian for mentioning that not all players love the game equally…

10:24
Mattingly’s Sideburns: Todd Frazier just called an oppo bomb for judge

10:24
Mike: Another low strike for Jusge

10:24
David: Judge is getting KILLED on low pitches

10:25
Confused Englishman: Ump keeps calling them, pitchers will keep throwing them

10:25
MikeM: They do know he is 11 feet tall and those are balls right?

10:25
Netflix and Rich Hill: Watching Shaw awakens that little voice in the back of my head that says – you could do what he’s doing – 2 pitches, high velocity…and look like you manage a run down gym in the offseason that you don’t work out at anymore but you love it because there are chix there

10:26
Paint the Black: I’ve always hated the ‘plays the game the right way’ comment that Smoltz just made. You know who also plays the game the right way? Luis Severino, who was all sorts of excited in game 4!

10:26
Noah: Let’s be real if Salazar is on the mound he blows 3 fastballs by Judge, at bat over

10:26
Dave Cameron: Do you think Judge’s problem this series has been *fastballs*?

10:26
Ryan: they all play the game the right way, this series is great

10:27
Matt: horrific strike 3 call

10:27
Luber: another terrible called strike on judge

10:27
Nick R: Big zone tonight

10:27
charlotte: That was a strike?

10:27
Chuckb: Not a strike. Great throw by Perez.

10:27
Mike: Opinion on strike zone ?

10:27
Dave Cameron: It’s big, but the Fox tracker is making it seem bigger than it has been.

10:27
Realist: That’s been the zone all night for everyone

10:28
David: not a strike, but at least consistent. less egregious than the low pitch earlier in the at bat.

10:28
deananna: its been consistent… but bad

10:28
Motown oden: Worst part of that strike em out throw em out is now I’m afraid of commercials

10:28
Cowdisciple: Strike zone has been ridiculously huge for everyone, not just Judge.

10:28
Dave Cameron: It’s been a bit wider than we’d expect, but not extreme.

10:28
Dave Cameron: The Fox tracker is too narrow.

10:28
Don’t Bogaerts the Xander: If I believed in momentum, that would feel like a big momentum shift…

10:29
Phil: I think people are being too swayed by the Fox graphic. Would be so much better if networks stopped that.

10:29
Post malone: I wish they would nuke the k zone overlay

10:29
Frank: or nuke the umpires

10:29
Mike: Gameday shows that as not a strike too

10:29
Dave Cameron: These are some borderline strike calls, no question.

10:30
Dave Cameron: Not saying they aren’t.

10:30
Dave Cameron: But this is more like 30% strike odds calls being called, not 1%

10:30
Mitchell: I think it’s been consistently wide for the whole game

10:30
Netflix and Rich Hill: the game still goes on, guys. He’s been consistent

10:31
That Guy: And that’s for the series, not just this game

10:31
gajklgj: no chat spam for that call against santana?

10:32
Kevin e : It seems like Santana has more 0-2 and 1-2 counts than anyone in baseball.

10:32
deananna: does it really matter who gets the spam if everyone says is consistently bad?

10:33
Post malone: Man DRob is so good

10:33
Mark: Literally every game I watch, I decide a different reliever is the Yankees best non-Chapman reliever

10:34
charlotte: I thought Robertson was like meh a year or so ago. Did he improved something? Or was that just a weird rough patch?

10:34
Dave Cameron: He had a homer problem for a while.

10:34
Dave Cameron: But he’s really good

10:34
David: you’d do Chapman for 2 innings and not do Kahnle 8 Chapman 9? Not sure how I feel about Chapman having to throw 30 pitches…..

10:34
Dave Cameron: Yeah, Chapman for two.

10:34
Dave Cameron: Kahnle and Green can get warm if Chapman runs out of gas.

10:35
Post malone: chapman is best yankee reliever but miller>chapman right?

10:35
Dave Cameron: Yes.

10:35
Conner from AZ: How do you feel about robot umps, Dave?

10:35
Dave Cameron: Tech isn’t there yet.

10:36
Dave Cameron: And even when it is, I’d probably rather have the tech be an aid for the human.

10:36
Greg: They need to stop showing the umpire butt cam when there are 2 strikes.

10:36
Crusty: Dave, how do you feel about robot statistics-based website editors?

10:37
Dave Cameron: I’m in favor. Then we can finally get rid of Carson!

10:37
Matt : Alright why Chapman for 2? Feel like 1 inning of two super dominant relievers better than 2 inning of one super dominant reliever who relys on keeping up insane velocity

10:37
Dave Cameron: Because if either of them give up a run, you have to pitch the 10th too.

10:38
The Hamburglar: Yeah, but you can end the game and the series?

10:38
Dave Cameron: Going 1 inning with Kahnle/Chapman is no guarantee of 0 runs allowed.

10:38
Owen: I think that Roberto Perez, noted playoff legend, will hit a baseball over the fence this plate appearance

10:39
Anonymous: I think that he will not.

10:39
Rosin Bag: Not the worst decision to pitch around Bruce there. Unless Perez gets a hit. Then it was the worst

10:39
Matt: As a Yankee fan this definitely has the feel of so poor player hitting a bomb for Indians to win it

10:39
808 : Dave I bet you $28 that kahnle goes out for the 8th inning instead of chapman

10:39
Dave Cameron: That is a weirdly specific amount.

10:40
gajklgj: 28 World Championships! META

10:40
$28: Not for a Yankees fan ;)

10:40
A Different Kevin: Gross

10:40
Anonymous: They did not move the fences in far enough

10:40
Nick R: Basically a home run

10:40
Owen: that was not a dinger

10:41
noseeum: I just rewound my Tivo.  Confirmed.  No dinger.

10:42
Dave Cameron:

I would start the 8th with

Robertson (8.2% | 29 votes)

Kahnle (44.0% | 154 votes)

Chapman (37.4% | 131 votes)

Green (10.2% | 36 votes)

Total Votes: 350
10:43
That Guy: Will one of you do an article on Judge’s strike zone so I won’t sit here wondering whether my seething at the zone is just misguided homerism or a legitimate gripe? I’m fine with either conclusion but that inbetween feeling is the worst.

10:43
Dave Cameron: Yup.

10:43
Dave Cameron: Plan on it tomorrow.

10:43
Nick R: Is it just me or do those new Taco Bell egg things look gross

10:43
Dave Cameron: It’s Taco Bell. Of course it’s gross.

10:43
David: does it hurt your feelings at all when the chat votes against your suggestion?

10:44
Dave Cameron: I don’t have feelings.

10:44
druidiful: Dave would need to blink to have feelings.

10:44
ChatzMcGee: Except hatred for my favourite team.

10:45
Dave Cameron: Didi has put himself in elite company by not doing what Babe and Reggie did.

10:45
Dave Cameron: Good job, Fox.

10:45
Danny: Chapman up for the yankees

10:45
Dave Cameron: Girardi is my simpatico.

10:46
Dave Cameron: (Well, not in the early innings…)

10:46
The Hamburglar: How was the “leaving CC” move in the 5th perceived in the chat? I was a little late

10:46
Dave Cameron: Disaster

10:47
The Hamburglar: It was perceived as a disaster at the bar I was at too, so it’s a pretty consistent reaction.

10:47
Dave Cameron: Anyone who understands baseball at all recognized that as a disaster.

10:48
CJ: Did Chad Green really fall out of favor that much? They are getting short on arms then – how is Warren?

10:48
Dave Cameron: No, he’s still in the mix. CC just pitched his innings tonight.

10:48
druidiful: It would help my heart so much if the Yankees could get another run or two.

10:49
Crusty: MORE EAST CAST CHAT BIAS!!!!

10:49
A Different Kevin: Is it too much ask that part of the announcer orientation and training would be a brief two-day stats-for-dummies course? At least a two hour seminar on how to interpret/contextualize the stats you already know.

10:49
Dave Cameron: Vasgersian isn’t an idiot.

10:49
Dave Cameron: They just are out of touch on how pitchers are used in the playoffs this year.

10:49
That guy from France: Hey Dave why aren’t you working in a Front office ? You have everything to do so … is it a choice ?

10:50
Dave Cameron: I’ve had a few offers over the years, but I work from home, get weekends off, don’t work holidays…

10:50
Dave Cameron: It’s a pretty good gig.

10:50
Chuckb: Also, spending time with family is underrated.

10:50
Dave Cameron: The very best part of my job is taking my kid to and picking him up from preschool every day.

10:51
Dave Cameron: It’s great.

10:52
Post malone: Do you ever wonder if your good enough to stick it in a FO role?

10:52
Dave Cameron: Not really. There are so many people way smarter and with more skills than me that want to work for teams.

10:52
John Farrell: Dave, you should go into announcing. You would bring a passionate, excitable voice to the long grind of a baseball season.

10:53
Dave Cameron: Yes, because who doesn’t want to hear someone sound like they’re conducting an auction with a cold?

10:53
Dylan: Chapman scares me

10:53
Robot: Dave is too emotional

10:53
The Hamburglar: That is the perfect way to describe your voice, Dave Cameron.

10:53
Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe: Dave, I love your commentary, but you do talk to fast.

10:53
Daniel: Radio face, silent movie voice

10:53
HipHip: Chapman coming in

10:54
ZWalt Guild Delegate: We’re in the ‘roast Dave Cameron’ segment of the chat? Sweet, now let’s discuss how Jose Ramirez was ranked too low on the trade value list.

10:54
The Hamburglar: I want to echo another person’s comment about the Indians hitting some unlikely, improbably HR.

10:54
Tyler: I always root for Chapman to lose

10:54
Buddy Chaps: Chapman for two innings? I think this is a bad call

10:54
Dave Cameron: The two inning save has become pretty standard in the postseason.

10:54
TB: Dave, I love you

10:54
Dave Cameron: Thanks, Liberty.

10:55
Dave Cameron: How did you learn how to type though?

10:55
AJ: Everything in this chat was ok until you insulted Taco Bell. Apologize!!

10:55
Dave Cameron: I’m sorry you like taco bell.

10:56
Chuckb: No pinch hitter?

10:56
Nick R: Why no PH for urshela

10:56
Dave Cameron: Chisenhall a lefty, so not a good option.

10:56
ChatzMcGee: They Erik Gonzalez!

10:56
Dave Cameron: I mean, he’s not exactly Didi Gregorius.

10:56
Fat Matt: Excessively sweaty

10:57
808: You could’ve been $28 richer

10:57
E: Urshela had like a 90% chance to strike out there, right?

10:57
Dave Cameron: 91%

10:58
John: I still don’t get how Rajai Davis hit that homer…

10:58
The Hamburglar: One of the keys lost in that “Chapman blown save” in last year’s WS, was Maddon stupidly bringing him in for Game 6 for no reason.

10:58
Dave Cameron: Yeah, the Game 7 issue was really a Game 6 mistake.

10:59
E: I was lucky enough to be at game 7 during that, I will never forget that moment in that stadium

10:59
Oddball Herrera: Do you really have to have a mound meeting with Chapman?  “”Whisper whisper….throw it even harder this time””

10:59
Daniel: Maddon got stuck on trusting three RPs, and it caused him to over use Chapman badly

10:59
Dave Cameron: Yeah. Girardi won’t have that problem, most likely.

11:00
Conner from AZ: I think the ump pooped himself a little there

11:00
Nick R: Is there going to be a NLDS game 5 chat tomorrow?

11:00
Dave Cameron: Yup!

11:01
John Autin: Kipnis, really?

11:01
Dave Cameron: They don’t have RH pinch hitters.

11:02
Alex: beautiful slider

11:03
Show Hey O’Tawny: He is so good

11:03
The Hamburglar: Well that went quite well

11:04
Dave Cameron: My son just came in and told me my son was handsome

11:04
Dave Cameron: So I have that going for me.

11:04
Ryan: same son or…

11:04
Dave Cameron: Yeah, I only have the one.

11:05
ChatzMcGee: He’s going places, confidence is the key.

11:05
ChatzMcGee: might also be a bit crazy.

11:06
Section329: Gadzooks,he’s talking?

11:06
Dave Cameron: He’s been talking for almost a year now. He’s basically ready to call a baseball game at this point. He doesn’t stop talking.

11:07
bernie williams is my father: does he like baseball?

11:07
Dave Cameron: Big fan of home runs.

11:07
Dave Cameron: The rest, eh.

11:07
Ben: Kind of amazing that the Indians have even made it this close with what they’ve received from Lindor, Kluber and Ramirez.

11:07
Dave Cameron: Yeah, if you said Kluber was going to give up 5 homers and Lindor/Ramirez would hit .100, would assume Yankees sweep.

11:08
bernie williams is my father: so he’s in favor of the HR surge

11:08
Dave Cameron: Kids do like their juice(d balls)

11:09
ChatzMcGee: A BIP!

11:09
Paul G.: Ole!

11:09
Show Hey O’Tawny: Jackson wyd

11:09
808: thank you jackson

11:09
John Autin: DON’T MAKE EXCUSES FOR THAT PLAY!

11:10
noseeum: Yes, Smoltz.  It was the English.

11:10
Dave Cameron: Maybe he’s french?

11:10
Jeff: Anything you can think of that Francona should’ve done differently?

11:10
Dave Cameron: Maybe carry a RH pinch-hitter?

11:10
Dave Cameron: But not really.

11:11
Cromwell: Not the first time the English has screwed the Indians

11:11
This is lude-icris: With a name like John he’s definitely French

11:11
Ryan: Was it correct to use Miller that early? Aren’t there higher leverage innings?

11:11
Dave Cameron: In an elimination game, they’re all high leverage.

11:11
Alex: Not start Bauer on short rest when you have Clevinger, Salazar and Tomlin

11:11
Dave Cameron: Okay, yes, that.

11:12
Show Hey O’Tawny: Jean de Smeultz

11:12
noseeum: Tell Kluber to pitch like he always does.  Tito def should have done that.

11:13
E: I hate when managers forget to tell their players to play good

11:13
Jeff: Dave – what is the probability the Indians actually score a run here against Chapman? Heart of the order, but, you know, Chapman. Like 5%?

11:13
Dave Cameron: Probably 10-20%

11:13
Dave Cameron: Even good relievers give up runs sometimes.

11:14
The Hamburglar: 10-20 seems so high as a Yankees fan.

11:14
Dave Cameron: Chapman gave up runs in 13/52 games this year.

11:15
Dave Cameron: Adjust down a bit because some of those might have been >1 run leads where he grooved one.

11:15
Jeff: Smoltz and Vasgersian keep blaming the pitching staff but the Indians have scored 5 runs in the past 26 innings

11:16
InternetStranger: Only 3 of 23 100-win teams have won the world series in the WC era.  So almost exactly the 1/8 you would expect based on randomness.

11:16
STL: adjust up bc more than 1 inning

11:17
E: Todd Frazier looks like a Todd Frazier bobblehead

11:18
Rick: Shouldn’t the Indians have guys going in the bulllpen?

11:18
Dave Cameron: Yes.

11:18
Jason: How long is the Indians window if this is it for this year?

11:18
Dave Cameron: They should still be good next year. 2019 possible, depending on how Kluber ages.

11:20
Jeff: Dave – not really a in game question, but does the presence of the juiced ball make it harder to value guys like Lindor or Rameriz going forward? It would seem that if the ball were to be changed it would dramatically affect their offensive outputs.

11:20
Dave Cameron: Yup.

11:20
Dave Cameron: It’s made talent evaluation for moderate power guys really hard.

11:21
Tyler: Do you continue to bat Aaron Judge at the two spot in the ALCS?

11:21
Dave Cameron: Yup. Astros don’t have the same nasty right-handed breaking ball guys that CLE has.

11:21
C: Verlander and McCullers though.

11:21
Dave Cameron: And Giles. They have some. CLE has like 10.

11:22
The Hamburglar: Does “sitting for a while” really effect pitchers? Any data?

11:22
Dave Cameron: I haven’t seen any, but given what we know about pitcher routines, it’d be surprising if it didn’t.

11:23
STL: should Girardi have 2 guys up and hot — not just up and playing catch — the second the 9th inning starts? (say yes, bc thats the correct answer)

11:23
Dave Cameron: Kahnle, at least.

11:23
Dave Cameron: No real reason to have Green up if Kahnle is ready.

11:23
John: I would think it’d affect starters more than relievers

11:23
Dave Cameron: I would think the opposite, since relievers don’t pitch multiple innings as often in the regular season.

11:24
STL: Fair enough (I was implying lefty / righty … but your answer suffices, so I yield my point)

11:24
Dave Cameron: You’re not going to remove Chapman for a different lefty.

11:24
STL: Next question:  Will Girardi have anyone even up and walking around the bullpen?  (say no, bc thats the correct answer)

11:24
Dave Cameron: No

11:25
druidiful: The “sitting for a while” is one spot where I would listen to a former pitcher.

11:25
Dave Cameron: Yeah, me too.

11:26
Nelson: Could the Indians have DLed Bauer to get Yandy Diaz or someone on the bench for this game?

11:26
Dave Cameron: If you DL someone in the DS, they are out for the LCS too.

11:27
ChatzMcGee: thats pretty clutch.

11:27
The Hamburglar: Huge

11:27
TB: That is a series winning worthy at bat

11:27
druidiful: Thank you runs!

11:27
Show Hey O’Tawny: Goddamnit

11:27
STL: Chapman looks very relieved

11:27
The Hamburglar: Well that at bat was well worth it

11:27
Lunar verLander: That play was both clutch and un-clutch

11:27
Show Hey O’Tawny: Goodnight Cleveland

11:27
Andre: Best at bat of the MLB seasoin

11:28
Ryan: Indian’s defense has been sloppy this whole series

11:28
Guest: Who’s at fault for that, Bruce or Lindor?

11:28
Dave Cameron: Lindor, I think.

11:28
Paul G.: What was Frazier’s base running rating this year?

11:29
Dave Cameron: -1.1 UBR

11:29
Paint the Black: Have followed Gardner since the start of his career in ’08. That was the defining moment of his Yankees career

11:29
That Guy: That at-bat was the stuff of legends.

11:30
Paul G.: Frazier does not look below average during the playoffs.

11:30
Pie: Pretty similar at bat to Reddick’s in the 8th off of Kimbrel

11:30
Realist: The Yankees have pitched a hell of a series. Despite the narrative, so have the Indians.

11:30
Andre: Gardner was down 1-2 that at-bat

11:30
Dave Cameron: There’s no DL in the postseason.

11:30
Dave Cameron: You can have an injury replacement on your roster, but you lose them for the next round too.

11:32
Nick R: It’s impressive how patient judge continues to be even with his struggles

11:32
Anthony: Re. pitcher’s sitting: I asked about this for EW a few months ago, and Ben Lindbergh linked to this. Effect seems minimal, but it exists http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17505

11:33
Nick R: Do you even consider going with kahnle for the 9th now? It’s been like 35 minutes

11:33
Dave Cameron: No, but he’d be up.

11:33
Dave Cameron: And ready.

11:34
Ryan: Was starting Encarnacion a mistake? Maybe save him as a PH?

11:34
Dave Cameron: If he was healthy enough to hit, start him.

11:34
John: Astros over/under 55% ALCS odds?

11:35
Dave Cameron: I’d go under.

11:35
Dave Cameron: HOU a better regular season team, but not sure about the postseason gap.

11:35
Dave Cameron: Yankee bullpen is a serious equalizer.

11:35
teddy: so far how good would you say this postseason has been

11:35
Dave Cameron: 10/10

11:35
The Hamburglar: I feel like the Yankees match up pretty decently against the Astros, Not enough to be favorites, but enough where Houstonb fans shouldnt be confident

11:36
Dave Cameron: Yep. Very RH line-up against Severino/Tanaka/Gray plus this pen.

11:36
Dave Cameron: Not a great match-up for HOU.

11:36
E: Only 98! He’s tired!

11:36
hildebeast21: This game isn’t over yet.

11:36
brian: this games not over

11:36
E: 97!

11:37
Bruml: As a former pitcher – the amount of time Chapman had to sit definitely is tough to deal with

11:37
Alex: 98,97,97 maybe there’s something to it

11:37
Dave Cameron: He was mostly 98/99 last inning too.

11:37
Dave Cameron: Could be he dialed it down to pitch two innings.

11:38
Pie: We’re looking at Severino vs Verlander in Game 2, right?

11:38
Dave Cameron: Yup!

11:38
Dave Cameron: Should be fun.

11:38
The Hamburglar: Not a good start with a 3 run lead….

11:38
Tyler: If he was going to dial it down then would it not have been better to just have him pitch 1

11:38
Dave Cameron: Maybe!

11:38
John Autin: Paging Mr. Kahnle … Mr. Kahnle, stay hot.

11:38
Jonathan: Paging Mr. Kahnle please

11:39
ChatzMcGee: Not inspiring much confidence.

11:39
Joe: If we go to extras….who comes in for NY?

11:39
Dave Cameron: Kahnle is next

11:39
Evan: Walk off grand slam would be objectively fun.

11:40
Nick: You’re right Smoltz- nobody else could understand why Chapman might struggle

11:40
Mark: As a Yankee fan, it would be subjectively unfun

11:40
Bruml: theres triple digits

11:41
The Hamburglar: Big

11:41
ChatzMcGee: Horrible AB.

11:41
E: Great at bat…

11:41
David: 101 K is more like it

11:41
TB: Middle middle 101

11:41
Bruml: he’s loose now

11:41
Nick R: Right down the middle

11:41
STL: that pitch is unfair in that situation

11:41
ChatzMcGee: Nasty.

11:41
hildebeast21: gonna be tough to get a hit if that’s a strike

11:42
Man: Wow if that slider’s working

11:42
That guy from France: Baseball is easy with a 101 FB !

11:43
STL: absolutely stunningly great hands by Castro

11:43
The Hamburglar: I was fully expecting Castro to boot that.

11:43
808: nice castro

11:43
JB: That’s well done by Castro

11:43
Anonymous: Friendly Reminder: Playoff baseball is awesome.

11:43
Mattingly’s Sideburns: Dave I hope you’re teaching your kid to be left handed and throw 102 mph.

11:43
Dave Cameron: Bats Left/Throws RIght. I don’t want to pay for Tommy John.

11:44
Joe Buck: I dunno about you, but I’m ready for this alcs

11:45
Kevin e : Amazing how cold the Indians hitters went. JRam and Lindor were in the top 5 for AL MVP wouldn’t you say?

11:45
Dave Cameron: Ramirez yes, Lindor no.

11:46
John: Can this end please my heart can’t take it.

11:46
Rosin Bag: Super bullpen has been super

11:46
Mitchell: Chapman, you throw 101. It’s not that hard of a decision.

11:46
David: that conversation on the mound seemed way more intense than it needed to be

11:46
This is lude-icris: Hey Gary how about for the next one I see how hard I can throw it

11:46
Man: 30 minutes between pitches

11:47
AdamZ: This series should kill the ‘momentum’ argument for the playoffs, no? Cleveland won like 30 of 33 at the end of the year.

11:47
Dave Cameron: People will find a way to tell you why next time is different.

11:48
Mattingly’s Sideburns: Why didn’t Austin Jackson run???

11:48
Evan: Jackson could have run to first there, no?

11:48
Bruml: run to first austin

11:48
Man: Girardi looks so happy

11:48
Dave Cameron: Congrats on a great year, Cleveland.

11:48
Dave Cameron: I know this doesn’t feel great right now.

11:49
Dave Cameron: But you were the AL’s best team this year. The postseason is a lot of luck.

11:49
Dave Cameron: Remember the great things about 2017.

11:49
Dave Cameron: NYY-HOU should be fun, though.

11:49
Dr. Bob: The elimination game lineup of a 102-win team featured Austin jackson, Roberto Perez and Geovanny Urshella. That’s unacceptable

11:49
Bruml: Francona has lost 6 straight elimination games?

11:49
Section329: thanks for the chat

11:50
Dave Cameron: Thanks for hanging out, everyone.

11:50
Dave Cameron: A chatter to be named later will be with you tomorrow night.

Seems like someone warned us the Yanks were “overwhelmingly powerful.”

Against the best staff of all time no less! I guess if you write all the headlines, then some will turn out.

I was glad to see some mention of Austin Jackson’s 1st at bat. He saw four straight balls and went down looking. That umpiring was brutal the entire game.
