Eno Sarris: Yeah was great. Really good velocity. Decent rise on 4s, good fade on sinker, threw 17! changeups and got whiffs. Slider was there. Everything I wanted from him.

Eno Sarris: I wish it was OBP. I wonder if you shouldn’t wait a start and see if you can’t get more.

Erik: Is having a terrible, Phillies-level bullpen secretly beneficial to a rebuild? It allows you to improve the rest of the team without getting too many of those pesky things called wins, which we all know do nothing but hurt your draft position.

Eno Sarris: I think about this a lot in basketball. Maybe it makes sense to draft a bunch of bigs still, like Philly. You’ll be bad in a small ball league, but you’ll get more lotto choices. Once you land your building block big, then you go pick guards. In the same way, don’t spend any time on the pen when you’re bad. And don’t convert any starters to the pen until they really flame out.

Eno Sarris: Enough command and a good enough slider to be a 3.5-3.7 ERA average-ish starting pitcher. Not enough velocity or good enough change/curve to be much better.

Erik: Aaron Nola looks really good, doesn’t he? He just doesn’t throw balls. Does he need anything other than experience to become a true frontline starter?

Eno Sarris: Maybe some sequencing to get more Ks, wait…

Eno Sarris: Still had the velo and Ks, still had the wildness. Not dropping yet, but dropping for Aaron Sanchez a really interesting question. Might do that actually.

Cespedes: So how worried should I be about McHugh? That was awful.

Eno Sarris: He’s always sort of borderline. Homer issues. If he can’t bury the slider, he’s a two pitch pitcher, a Jarred Cosart with lesser velocity and a bit more command.

Zach: The Pirates have turned into somewhat of a darling in the analytics community. It started back in 2013 when they tested the impact of shifting (with massive success) and now they’re exploring very data driven methodology such as non-traditional lineups, not letting pitchers go three times through an order, and slowly moving away from antiquated bullpen roles. Would you say the credit here goes to Clint Hurdle who has chosen to implement these ideas? Are we finally going to start seeing more teams do this sort of thing?

Eno Sarris: I do think Hurdle deserves a lot because the manager is the last bastion. But you’re seeing a sea change. Look at Bochy. Talked crap on hitting the pitcher 8th last year, and lookie here.

anon: Eno I have Xander and Correa and big holes at 2b/3b. Obviously not moving Correa, but I have no idea what kind of return to look for from a Xander move. Definitely in a rebuilding season. Do I hold and hope he does something like .280 20?

Eno Sarris: 2B is where teams put guys that they can’t put elsewhere. You should do the same. I’d wait.

Marc: Pirates controll Caminero until after the 2020 season. How many of those seasons will he be the closer?

Eno Sarris: Guess that’s why he’s pitching the 7th. Fewer holds and saves. New guy, Felizitswhat, he gets the 8th despite much less exciting stuff.

Eno Sarris: i’m so unhairy that I just use an electric.

mtsw: Obviously, the Padres will eventually score a run, but how possible is it they have the worst lineup in the majors this year? I’d rather have Maikel Franco than any hitter on their roster

Eno Sarris: I’m hoping for a little more from Wil Myers, maybe Margot at some point… The dot-dot-dots tell the story.

mtsw: What should we expect from Robert Stephenson’s first MLB start today besides a bunch of “Treasure Island” jokes?

Eno Sarris: Wild fire fastball, good breaking ball, and maybe too many swings because people don’t know his stuff that well.

2-D: Arm strengthening methods: Kimbrel used throwing from his knees, Steve Delabar used a throwing motion with weighted balls without releasing them, Bartolo throws weighted balls, and Bauer uses long toss. Does long toss still seem to be the most popular? Any other methods gaining popularity?

Eno Sarris: Bauer uses weighted balls too. Lots of guys use weighed balls. Read the driveline piece, pitchers are asking me about that piece for sure.

Denis: I know it’s early but how are you feeling about Samardzija?

Eno Sarris: About the same as I did before. Worried. Down a full tick from last year. More 93 than 94. And 94 is when fastballs get better.

Eno Sarris: No I actually like that. I want more data on Anderson. He did strike out a few more this spring, but he has such a terrible history of Ks that I want to see more. Even a velo boost is just enough for me to buy as a lotto ticket.

Zorn: In terms of buying Story (I did just listen to most recent podcast), how would you feel about moving Gregerson for Story if your current SS’s are K Marte & Brad Miller? (This is H2H points league)

Eno Sarris: Well heck I’d trade a Gregerson type for just about anything.

Scott: Can I recommend Fools gold for the NYC meet up? Good space (relative to NYC bars) and a big killer tap list at all times.

Eno Sarris: You can! Now I will have to see where it is, if they can give us space, and if I can convince the rest of the people to do something other than Foley’s.

Zorn: I don’t really understand the concept of a rebuilding season three days in. Even if taking over an orphaned team, I see no reason why competing for title is not possible…

Eno Sarris: He might have known at the end of last season, and in some leagues, I do think rebuilding needs to happen. In my 20-teamer with 28 keepers, I keep looking at the possibility, even as I also agree with you and build to win every year and sell peripheral pieces when I don’t win.

Joe: How much weight do you place in a lineup spot? For example, if you know that Segura is going to bat leadoff all year, and Russell is stuck hitting 8th or 9th, does that push Segura’s value higher? Thinking of this season only.

Eno Sarris: It’s worth about 140 plate appearances over the course of the year. But! Russell going to move up. I’d say the difference if both healthy is going to be more like 80-100.

Rasta: Better SS over the next month (until Kang’s return): Semien in 8 hole or Lowrie hitting 3rd?

Eno Sarris: Semien.

Stuafoo: Is there any kind of analysis out there equating the manner in which a batter is pitched (ex slow stuff/fast stuff or inside/outside) to the batter’s performance (war or equivalent)? I heard an argument that basically stated Cano is off to a hot start because pitchers are throwing to him based on his 2015 first half analytics, and that it should normalize when the conclusion shifts to injury being the reason for his struggles as opposed to decline. Clearly it’s a gray area where normal performance/decline is a factor (not to mention good hitters seeing fewer good pitches to hit), but I feel like the style in which a batter is pitched could be teased apart from true talent/performance. Or maybe not, hence me asking.

Eno Sarris: Seen some. For instance. Before you even see movement in gross power numbers, people hitting for small-sample power will see their zone% go down, and will see fewer fastballs, and will see average distance from center of zone increase. So it definitely happens.

Erik: Smooth, standard deliveries prevent injury and help control, but funky, deceptive deliveries are harder to hit. True as a general rule? And should pitchers optimize one way or the other, or aim for some mix?

Eno Sarris: I think I agree. But! There are ways to be deceptive without affecting repeatability which is the key to command and health. Imagine bringing the ball up in a long arm path behind you, or straight up by your head. All things equal, the one by the head is more deceptive and healthier.

FantasyMan: What is the advantage in batting the pitcher 8th instead of 9th?

Eno Sarris: I think it has to do with getting someone on base for the top of the lineup and also bringing in the pinch hitter earlier.

njs: wow, i had no idea the difference b/t hitting leadoff & 8/9 was 140 ABs… is it a linear decline through the order?

Eno Sarris: Kind of. It’s supposed to be about 14 PA per slot, but it sorta steam rolls near the bottom from what I’ve seen.

David: Does Boxberger get his job back? I might drop Kela for him since you don’t like the KK.

Eno Sarris: I like Kela some, but he’s being used before Dyson and hasn’t been fire yet. Box is on a team that shuttles guys in and out of the closer’s role, the Mike Shanahans of fantasy saves. I’d wait a week, there’s no reason for other people to pick up Box. plus he’s on DL, better to target another pitcher, drop Kela, DL Box, get another pitcher.

Joe: How do you see Russell moving up in that stacked lineup? Who’s spot is he taking? The top of the order is already set and has movable pieces to shift in and out in case of injuries (Fowler, Heyward, Zobrist). I’d be thrilled, just don’t see how Russell can move up to anything other than the 7th spot at best.

Eno Sarris: I think he could push Montero down easy. But I love love Russell and I could see him as a better fit than Zobrist, especially when Zobrist gets injured, chance to leap up.

Eno Sarris: Also remember I only gave him 40 PA back, so three spots from 9th on average.

Joe: Let’s say DeSclafani comes back this weekend and looks great. Does that immediately change your opinion on him as far as this season’s outlook? I know you were really high on him coming into the season, plus he had a great spring (increased k%). Just the injury holding him back.

Eno Sarris: Saison/belgian pale for the belgian/light crowd, american pale ale / IPa for in between, one stout. Easy, available, great: Boulevard Tank 7, AleSmith Pale Ale, Old Rasputin. Those are national beers that would make most beer people in my life happy. Then you establish yourself and can play with each tap as you see fit.

Joe: With all of the things going against him (poor lineup, bad home park, etc.), why should I feel optimistic about Khris Davis this season?

Eno Sarris: Good exit velocity, Justin Upton type power that should still play in that park. Bad BA though maybe.
