Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 4/7/16

12:47
Eno Sarris: What a classic. Timeless. RIP.

12:01
Mark: When/where will your NY meetup be this summer?

12:01
Eno Sarris: June 16. Be there. Not sure where, but New York City. Probably just Foley’s but if I can finagle better beer…

12:01
Alex: Is Nicasio for real?

12:02
Eno Sarris: I’m still suspicious. Was down two ticks late, threw only five changeups.

12:02
The Inbetweener: Trevor Story for Trea Turner straight up in a dynasty league in which I’m not contending this year. Yes?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Eh. Trea hasn’t even shown us as much as Story. He did make more contact, but he won’t have the same power.

12:02
BIG L: RIP

12:03
Jeff: I was pretty impressed with what I saw from Finnegan yesterday. What was your take away? Was it more the Phillies being bad or are you more confident today than you were heading into drafts?

12:04
Eno Sarris: Yeah was great. Really good velocity. Decent rise on 4s, good fade on sinker, threw 17! changeups and got whiffs. Slider was there. Everything I wanted from him.

12:04
Gerb: Baseball got me like

12:04
Eno Sarris:

12:05
Rand Corporation: Hi Eno, Hoping you can offer some trade advice for a h2h, std 5×5, redraft mixed league. My Garrett Richards for his Shin Soo Choo? I have a decent staff with Scherzer, Thor, Carrasco, Liriano, Pineda. I’m looking to rebolster my OF a bit after losing Pollock to DL. In context, fair trade? Thanks 🙂

12:05
Eno Sarris: I wish it was OBP. I wonder if you shouldn’t wait a start and see if you can’t get more.

12:05
Erik: Is having a terrible, Phillies-level bullpen secretly beneficial to a rebuild? It allows you to improve the rest of the team without getting too many of those pesky things called wins, which we all know do nothing but hurt your draft position.

12:06
Eno Sarris: I think about this a lot in basketball. Maybe it makes sense to draft a bunch of bigs still, like Philly. You’ll be bad in a small ball league, but you’ll get more lotto choices. Once you land your building block big, then you go pick guards. In the same way, don’t spend any time on the pen when you’re bad. And don’t convert any starters to the pen until they really flame out.

12:07
Miketron: When is it time to panic?!? Its time to panic, right?!?

12:07
Eno Sarris: WHAT ARE WE PANICKING ABOUT

12:07
John: Dyson getting Rangers’ next save opp?

12:07
Eno Sarris: I think so. They said the would mix and match, and now Tolleson’s back looks like it’s leading to bad results despite increased velocity.

12:07
daneyko: Randal Grichuk is the next Colby Rasmus ? Swing and a miss !

12:07
Eno Sarris: Hey that’s a great comp actually.

12:08
Weekly Eovaldi Question: Weekly Eovaldi Question

12:08
risky starts: Eovaldi today? Eickhoff tomorrow?

12:08
Eno Sarris: Yes, yes.

12:08
Sean P: Do you think Houston made wise decisions in managing their bullpen the way they have with the roles of Giles/Gregerson?

12:08
Eno Sarris: I’d love them not to name a closer and say something like: I will not answer another question about who is our closer. As the manager, wear it. Tell the relievers not to worry about it, this team has no closer. You guys are 8/9 guys.

12:09
The Dude of NY: Bold Prediction: The Cleveland Spiders beat the Montreal Expos in the World Series.

12:09
Eno Sarris: The way the drum is beating about the Cleveland team name, and getting baseball to Montreal, not impossible in 2020

12:10
JDogg: Impressions of Maeda’s start last night?

12:10
Eno Sarris: Enough command and a good enough slider to be a 3.5-3.7 ERA average-ish starting pitcher. Not enough velocity or good enough change/curve to be much better.

12:10
Erik: Aaron Nola looks really good, doesn’t he? He just doesn’t throw balls. Does he need anything other than experience to become a true frontline starter?

12:11
Eno Sarris: Maybe some sequencing to get more Ks, wait…

12:11
JDogg: Impressions of Matt Moore’s first start?

12:11
Eno Sarris: Still had the velo and Ks, still had the wildness. Not dropping yet, but dropping for Aaron Sanchez a really interesting question. Might do that actually.

12:11
Cespedes: So how worried should I be about McHugh? That was awful.

12:12
Eno Sarris: He’s always sort of borderline. Homer issues. If he can’t bury the slider, he’s a two pitch pitcher, a Jarred Cosart with lesser velocity and a bit more command.

12:12
Marc: How I missed Camineros effortless 102 MPH fastball

12:12
Eno Sarris: Why is he pitching the 7th.

12:12
Zach: The Pirates have turned into somewhat of a darling in the analytics community. It started back in 2013 when they tested the impact of shifting (with massive success) and now they’re exploring very data driven methodology such as non-traditional lineups, not letting pitchers go three times through an order, and slowly moving away from antiquated bullpen roles. Would you say the credit here goes to Clint Hurdle who has chosen to implement these ideas? Are we finally going to start seeing more teams do this sort of thing?

12:13
Eno Sarris: I do think Hurdle deserves a lot because the manager is the last bastion. But you’re seeing a sea change. Look at Bochy. Talked crap on hitting the pitcher 8th last year, and lookie here.

12:14
Terrible Ted: ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US

12:14
Hey Eno!:

12:14
The Dude of NY: Disappointing that such a high excitement player struggled so much yesterday.

12:14
Eno Sarris: hey more video ludes, I’m into it.

12:15
anon: Eno I have Xander and Correa and big holes at 2b/3b. Obviously not moving Correa, but I have no idea what kind of return to look for from a Xander move. Definitely in a rebuilding season. Do I hold and hope he does something like .280 20?

12:15
Eno Sarris: 2B is where teams put guys that they can’t put elsewhere. You should do the same. I’d wait.

12:16
Marc: Pirates controll Caminero until after the 2020 season. How many of those seasons will he be the closer?

12:16
Eno Sarris: Guess that’s why he’s pitching the 7th. Fewer holds and saves. New guy, Felizitswhat, he gets the 8th despite much less exciting stuff.

12:16
Kion: Do you use shaving cream or shaving gel?

12:17
Eno Sarris: i’m so unhairy that I just use an electric.

12:17
mtsw: Obviously, the Padres will eventually score a run, but how possible is it they have the worst lineup in the majors this year? I’d rather have Maikel Franco than any hitter on their roster

12:18
Eno Sarris: I’m hoping for a little more from Wil Myers, maybe Margot at some point… The dot-dot-dots tell the story.

12:18
Marc: You need to come to Pittsburgh and interview Caminero. I’ll even buy you a beer 🙂

12:18
Eno Sarris: I have! I think it was an instagraphs and nobody noticed.

12:19
mtsw: What should we expect from Robert Stephenson’s first MLB start today besides a bunch of “Treasure Island” jokes?

12:19
Eno Sarris: Wild fire fastball, good breaking ball, and maybe too many swings because people don’t know his stuff that well.

12:19
2-D: Arm strengthening methods: Kimbrel used throwing from his knees, Steve Delabar used a throwing motion with weighted balls without releasing them, Bartolo throws weighted balls, and Bauer uses long toss. Does long toss still seem to be the most popular? Any other methods gaining popularity?

12:20
Eno Sarris: Bauer uses weighted balls too. Lots of guys use weighed balls. Read the driveline piece, pitchers are asking me about that piece for sure.

12:20
Denis: I know it’s early but how are you feeling about Samardzija?

12:21
Eno Sarris: About the same as I did before. Worried. Down a full tick from last year. More 93 than 94. And 94 is when fastballs get better.

12:21
Sante Adarius: How good am I?

12:21
Eno Sarris: The. Best. or at least up there.

12:21
Socrates Cheeto: Nola looked great last night — any thoughts on a breakout?

12:21
Eno Sarris: really liked how he threw so many curveballs. Might be tough on health long term, but it means now that batters have to guess and have a harder time sitting on either.

12:22
Art Vandelay: I’m gonna save you some time and answer all the fantasy questions for the chat: It’s only been 3 games, just relax.

12:22
shubbles: over/under: my musk or my husk?

12:22
i hate my team:

12:22
BK: Why can’t we ever have a meet up in Saskatchewan, Canada?

12:22
Eno Sarris: um

12:22
I hate saves: Three days and I’ve already lost Giles and probably Tolleson as closers. Pretty much everyone and their backups (and their backups) are already owned. What am I supposed to do?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Hold both, drop Tolleson earlier.

12:22
Gest : If it’s a full blown GB pitcher going up against a full blown FB hitter, what assumption would you make for how the at bats are going to go?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Advantage batter.

12:23
Eno Sarris: Has the swing to hit those low balls and take them into the air.

12:23
Brett: Your MadBum article scared me to death. I’m in a keep-10 league and own him. Any names that I should be targeting?

12:23
Eno Sarris: Wait for one more start.

12:23
Jake: How are you gonna celebrate national beer day?

12:24
Eno Sarris: Is it today? There are so many national beer/stout/IPA days. Marketing trick. I drink beer when I want to. Which isn’t every day! But it is a lot of days.

12:24
mario: what can i expect from story as a whole? 260 with 20 homers and 12 steals?

12:24
Eno Sarris: .240/25/10

12:24
Eno Sarris: Ah! but risk in the 25 and the .240 — *something* will happen with Jose Reyes.

12:24
Hannah Hochevar: FAAB’d Bassit over Cody Anne. Was this a tragic mistake that I’ll never live down? I trust you implicitly.

12:25
Eno Sarris: No I actually like that. I want more data on Anderson. He did strike out a few more this spring, but he has such a terrible history of Ks that I want to see more. Even a velo boost is just enough for me to buy as a lotto ticket.

12:25
Zorn: In terms of buying Story (I did just listen to most recent podcast), how would you feel about moving Gregerson for Story if your current SS’s are K Marte & Brad Miller? (This is H2H points league)

12:25
Eno Sarris: Well heck I’d trade a Gregerson type for just about anything.

12:26
Scott: Can I recommend Fools gold for the NYC meet up? Good space (relative to NYC bars) and a big killer tap list at all times.

12:26
Eno Sarris: You can! Now I will have to see where it is, if they can give us space, and if I can convince the rest of the people to do something other than Foley’s.

12:26
Proswagonist: Article idea: Do RHP throw as many front door breaking balls versus RHH as LHP do vs LHH? To me it seems like RHP don’t utilize it often enough.

12:27
Eno Sarris: Good idea!

12:27
Kevin: What are your preferred stats to look at when evaluating pitcher performance?

12:27
Eno Sarris: Velocity, movement, swinging strike rate in that order of sample.

12:27
mtsw: What are the odds we’re getting good-Anibal Sanchez this season?

12:27
Eno Sarris: decent. It’s always about his shoulder.

12:27
JDogg: back to Garret Richards .. trying to acquire him from an owner who’s thin at SP. Think Maeda and Matt Moore could get that deal done? Give him depth

12:27
Eno Sarris: I’d do that.

12:28
Matt: Jeremy Hellickson is throwing an 82mph with 1.44 inches of H-movement and 5.32 inches of rise. Brooks labels it as a cutter, but WTF is that pitch?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Average movement for a cutter http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-change-average-movement-for-each-pitch-type/ but yeah that velocity is weird! He’s throwing a slow cutter, a slutter!

12:29
kevinthecomic: how long until Justin Wilson is the Tigers closer?

12:29
Eno Sarris: Lefties have a harder time, but yeah that bullpen is once again… not good! Amazing!

12:30
Eno Sarris: (I’d give Soria first shot.)

12:30
PJ Areller: SSS but it’s starting to look like replacing Justin Upton with Jon Jay isn’t going to work out.

12:30
Eno Sarris: Let’s just leave that there.

12:31
The Hamburglar: Pineda was leaving a ton of pitches up in the zone yesterday. Concerned?

12:32
Eno Sarris: Weird. His worst game by average vertical pitch location in the last two years…

12:32
Eno Sarris: He’s had a few games that were close though so I’d wait another game. Weather might be a factor.

12:34
Brett Lawrie’s Empty Redbull Can: Thought on the Bautista Slide (Sounds like it should be an 80s dance move). Sentiment in Toronto is that its the greatest injustice in history, but seems there was clear intent from Jose

12:34
Eno Sarris: I saw a bit of a swipe, sorry, I did. Let’s give it a week and forget about it.

12:34
MarinerDan: Can Hanley Ramirez recover his value this year?

12:34
Eno Sarris: Sure.

12:34
the bureau/ddsp/LORI@ ESTEFAN: come to BK we’ll show u dat good good beer doe

12:34
Eno Sarris: Wish Bierkraft still existed.

12:34
Justin: Ottoneu Old School – My $16 CMart for his/her $60 Kershaw. What else (if anything) would I need to throw in to make it work? Kershaw owner is looking to free up salary.

12:35
Eno Sarris: Fair deal given the money.

12:35
Joey: Is this line-drive smashing, walk-taking lanky freak of nature the real Gregory Polanco?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Always thought he would grow into this.

12:35
Parker: What’s your take on Synergaard after that performance Tuesday?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Sexy time.

12:35
Rick: What would you do to fix the Padres?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Build in the international market like Preller is known to do.

12:36
mtsw: Re: Philly basketball, is taking over for Sam Hinkie the greatest GM gig ever? Tons of assets, no where to go but up. It’s like if the Cubs fired Epstein two years ago and hired Syd Thrift to come in and get all the credit as they get better.

12:36
Eno Sarris: Yes I want that job.

12:36
kevinthecomic: wait a minute, re: eovaldi and eickhoff — are you saying “yes” they’re risky or “yes” they’re good picks to start?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Both. So if you protecting innings or ahead in H2H, stash and wait and see. I want to see 40% splitters from Eovaldi, and what Eickhoff is doing with his fastball.

12:37
Ralph Waldo Emerson: Sir Eno, I do say, your chats are simply marvelous. Could you oblige an old chap and opine on your preference. If you had to start a franchise, would you rather the young arms of the Mets: Harvey, Syndergaard, deGrom, Matz, and Wheeler OR would you fancy the young bats of the Cubs: Rizzo, Bryant, Heyward, Schwarber, and Solar?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Don’t at me youngsters. I take the bats. Always have.

12:37
risky farts: the ones when you’re in bed with your sig oth when you think the sheets will hold them in

12:38
risky sharts: all of them

12:38
Eno Sarris: And then there’s that.

12:38
Frank: Eno, I really have to poop, but I also have a delicious cold Stout to consume that I just opened. I also do not feel it necessary to miss any of this chat. I refuse to bring delicious beer or my laptop with me into the restroom. What should I do?

12:38
Eno Sarris: The stout is fine warmer. Poop quick.

12:38
The Hamburglar: I cant imagine marketing a team after a widely feared insect would be great. Cleveland Tribe would work wonders though.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Aren’t snakes widely feared? Sharks? Most team names?

12:39
2-D:

12:39
Eno Sarris: Like he’s got the twitches, needs his meth.

12:39
Lance: Dyson your favorite speculative saves add? I have k-rod and not feeling great about it. League counts holds as well, and I already have Strickland.

12:39
Eno Sarris: Dyson over Strickland.

12:39
Pop: Will Trout ever get a hit?

12:40
Eno Sarris: nope. It’ll be a season people talk about for decades. The time the best player in the league went hitless for 600 plate appearances. He’ll still go to the Hall though.

12:40
Snarfle: Should we care about this Joey Rickard fellow?

12:40
Eno Sarris: Video answer!

12:41
Johnny5Alive: i thought i was smart picking up hinojosa late in my nl only auction, and david hernandez first appearance made it look like a great decision. then last night, woof.

12:41
Eno Sarris: I think you fade that entire bullpen.

12:41
Eno Sarris: (meaning run away screaming)

12:41
Ed: Stephen Piscotty a streamer or a hold in a shallow 10-teamer?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Very borderline in a ten-teamer.

12:42
The Hamburglar: Do you have more faith in Aaron Sanchez or Juan Nicasio going forward?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Sanchez for real.

12:42
BK: Hot take on Aaron Sanchez please

12:42
Eno Sarris: the 20 pounds of muscle will shave a full walk per nine off his career record this year.

12:42
Unexpected Erection: Drop Leake for Aaron Nola? (I was betting on the Leake benefitting from the Cards’ voodoo magic this year ala Lohse in the past)

12:42
Eno Sarris: yes.

12:42
Zorn: Tell me about Patrick Corbin ROS…

12:42
Eno Sarris: Didn’t walk anyone. Safer away from home, still a good pitcher that should be rostered in all leagues.

12:42
Ben: Any alarm bells from Greinke’s start? Or just one of those days?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Like zero of the alarm bells that were there in Madison Bumgarner’s start.

12:43
uruguayan: What is Trevor Bauer’s next true role?

12:43
Eno Sarris: National League starter.

12:43
Joey: I get that for fantasy purposes you want Caminero getting saves, but isn’t it better for the pirates to, ya know, have him pitch in leveraged situations in w/e inning instead of wasting him on 3 run leads in the ninth? Basically, isn’t it a better use of a bullpen to have a guy like Melancon take the ninth and use weapons like Watson and Caminero whenever?

12:43
Eno Sarris: Yes but he’s also pitching in low leverage situations so.

12:44
Brandon: Don’t mind me, I’m just purchasing thirty-eight Joey Rickard jerseys for all my friends and family

12:44
Eno Sarris: I mean he’s a righty with very little power. Fourth/platoon OF, but could be fun enough to make the jerseys fun.

12:44
mtsw: Franchise with problematic Native American name fields a team of castoffs in a scheme to tank attendance ahead of a move to a new stadium. Plot of 1980s comedy “Major League” or your 2016 Atlanta Braves?

12:45
Eno Sarris: Well done. Who’s clothes we pulling off the poster?

12:45
Zorak: Adam Eaton, kind of a Brantley-light? Similar game, but without the elite K-BB numbers

12:46
Eno Sarris: Yeah, Brantley a bit more powerful exit velocity wise, also hits in ideal launch angle while Eaton is a bit all over the place in that department. And Eaton had shoulder surgery, though he claims minor. I like Eaton for 8-10 homers, 20 stolen bases, good AVG/OBP.

12:46
MarinerDan: Rank these closers ROS: Papelbon, Rondon, and Gregerson

12:46
Eno Sarris: that order.

12:46
Eno Sarris: I used to worry about Papelbon’s reduced velocity, but at some point you shrug. They using Shawn Kelley for one out at a time.

12:46
Sean: Small sample size, but guess who is tied for lead league in DRS? Chris Owings, in centerfield. Baseball is awesome.

12:46
Maxamuz: Drop T. Bauer for Randal Grichuk?

12:46
Eno Sarris: yeah

12:47
Zorak: Ugh so who is the closer in Oakland? I thought Doolittle was looking solid, very sad to wake up and see Madson with the save

12:47
Eno Sarris: Doolittle pitched two days in a row. He’s the closer and I have a piece coming out that is appreciative of the new splitter and the velocity.

12:47
Bork: Gregg Zaun says that illegal slides should be allowed and if the slides are bad players should just beat the shit out of each other. Not really a question, just want to laugh at Zaun.

12:47
Eno Sarris: WE SHOULD BEAT HIM UP! (we shouldn’t beat him up.)

12:48
Erik: Interesting article by August comparing Syndergaard and Chapman yesterday. Should they both be starters? Both relievers? Or is there some key difference about them that makes it the correct decision for Thor to start and Chapman to close?

12:48
Eno Sarris: Development path.

12:48
Need to know about ludes: what the heck is a lude?

12:48
Eno Sarris: When I let you people say silly things. Like this.

12:48
Jim: Puig, destroyer of worlds hath returned, prepare yourself accordingly.

12:48
CLE: Let’s just call them the Naps. Sounds racist, but isn’t.

12:48
Brandon: Eno’s entire body is smooth as a baby’s bottom

12:49
Eno Sarris: Those were literally all in a row so somehow you guys all know.

12:49
mtsw: Buying the Tillman velo spike? Seems more plausible is that he knew he was likely to leave early via rain delay and that the entire bullpen was available since opening day was followed by a day off anyway.

12:49
Eno Sarris: Dude his stuff is all over the place, spin rates, velocity, everything. Last year he tried to throw a sinker and a rise ball, which nobody does. Fascinating. No idea.

12:49
Zorn: I don’t really understand the concept of a rebuilding season three days in. Even if taking over an orphaned team, I see no reason why competing for title is not possible…

12:51
Eno Sarris: He might have known at the end of last season, and in some leagues, I do think rebuilding needs to happen. In my 20-teamer with 28 keepers, I keep looking at the possibility, even as I also agree with you and build to win every year and sell peripheral pieces when I don’t win.

12:51
The Ghost of Dayn Perry: Please POWER RANK these sandwich ingredients, in terms of importance to the overall sandwich, no ties allowed: Bread, Protein, other ingredients (cheese, veggies), sauces (ketchup, aioli, etc), DIRECTION OF CUT

12:51
Eno Sarris: Protein, Sauce, Other, Bread, Cut, sorry.

12:51
Greg: If you were selling one of Nicasio or Maeda today which would it be

12:51
Eno Sarris: Nicasio.

12:52
Robin Ventura: Your thoughts on Carlos Rodon

12:53
Eno Sarris: Giddyap. The move on the rubber really did wonders for his command. His misses are closer / in the zone.

12:53
Marc: If I was more tech savvy I’d post a picture of a Ray Searage Blonde Ale I found at a 6pack shop in Pittsburgh. How many do I have to consume before Searage has me throwing 95+ and the next pirate success story?

12:53
Eno Sarris: Would be a movie.

12:53
Fred Farkle: Would you be open to a relegation system in baseball akin to the European Soccer leagues? I’ve been to some beautiful AAA parks and I know those fans would love a shot at a great story ala Leicester City!

12:53
Eno Sarris: I love it. Would never happen.

12:53
KC: Brinson, Kepler, Margot, in which order would you rank in terms of likeliness to have an impact this year?

12:54
Eno Sarris: Kepler Margot are close. They going to wait on Brinson because he’s delicate wrt strikeouts.

12:54
BobSteve!: Been looking forward to Robert Stephenson’s debut for years, but I run the liquor program at a restaurant in a big city, and I just got invited to a pretty big event with lots of free high end wine/liquor and food, so I’m going ot miss it. What will I miss??

12:54
Eno Sarris: Nothing because you’ll watch the replay or record it.

12:54
Eno Sarris: Modern life! Maybe you can even stream some on your phone in the bathroom.

12:54
Robbie: Nick Ahmed and Jake Lamb on the left side of the D-backs infield is really nice

12:54
Eno Sarris: I don’t believe in Nick Ahmed. Doesn’t exist.

12:54
Veto Or Not Veto: Roberto Osuna for…Felix Hernandez. The league is in an uproar and where are my earplugs!

12:55
Eno Sarris: Never veto. It’s just sour grapes.

12:55
JDogg: Trevor Story = Dan Uggla?

12:55
Eno Sarris: Hey! Not bad!

12:55
Matt Damon: MATT. DAMON.

12:55
Eno Sarris: Where you been.

12:55
Joe: How much weight do you place in a lineup spot? For example, if you know that Segura is going to bat leadoff all year, and Russell is stuck hitting 8th or 9th, does that push Segura’s value higher? Thinking of this season only.

12:56
Eno Sarris: It’s worth about 140 plate appearances over the course of the year. But! Russell going to move up. I’d say the difference if both healthy is going to be more like 80-100.

12:56
Charles Metsfanimus: Hi Eno. Thank you for all your work and I hope you enjoy doing it as much as we enjoy reading it. Would you rather have DeSclafani, Nola, or Velasquez ROS? Thanks in advance.

12:57
Eno Sarris: Dang I love all of them, but VV not going to have a full innings complement, DeScla hurt… Have to go Nola.

12:58
Jack: Thoughts on Shelby? Didn’t look great the other night. Was thinking of trading for him though.

12:58
Eno Sarris: I’d buy him cheap. Been rethinking the Story talk from the podcast, that’s too much probably. But a Nicasio for Shelby? Gimme.

12:59
Rasta: Better SS over the next month (until Kang’s return): Semien in 8 hole or Lowrie hitting 3rd?

12:59
Eno Sarris: Semien.

12:59
Stuafoo: Is there any kind of analysis out there equating the manner in which a batter is pitched (ex slow stuff/fast stuff or inside/outside) to the batter’s performance (war or equivalent)? I heard an argument that basically stated Cano is off to a hot start because pitchers are throwing to him based on his 2015 first half analytics, and that it should normalize when the conclusion shifts to injury being the reason for his struggles as opposed to decline. Clearly it’s a gray area where normal performance/decline is a factor (not to mention good hitters seeing fewer good pitches to hit), but I feel like the style in which a batter is pitched could be teased apart from true talent/performance. Or maybe not, hence me asking.

Eno Sarris: Seen some. For instance. Before you even see movement in gross power numbers, people hitting for small-sample power will see their zone% go down, and will see fewer fastballs, and will see average distance from center of zone increase. So it definitely happens.

1:00
Chris: Tanaka + Casilla for Hamels + Giles – which side do you want?

1:00
Eno Sarris: Hamels Giles.

1:00
Alcides Soundsystem: COME TO NY AND INTERVIEW SYNDERGAARD

1:00
Eno Sarris: I interviewed him at the Futures Game and again for the Warthen Slider piece!

1:01
Thom: What are your favor (relatively) available beers in NYC?

1:01
Eno Sarris: I really like Grimm Afterimage, but I hear it’s hard to get. More attainable: Sixpoint Hi-Res/Resin.

1:01
Pop: Better Story: of my Life or Neverending?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Always neverending.

1:02
Marty: Leaving for Belgium next week. Three beers I must try…GO!

1:03
Eno Sarris: Cantillon St. Lamvinus, Fou Foune. Westvleteren if you go there.

1:03
Pie Traynee: I think you might be forgetting about Watson in this whole Pirates bullpen discussion.

1:03
Eno Sarris: The lefties always get short shrift. Managers go to them as closers half as often as the population of lefty reliever suggests they should.

1:04
BK:

1:04
Eno Sarris: party at the blue arrow! bring your parkas!

1:05
mtsw: If a MLB star wanted to buy a couple houses near the single-A club and let the non-bonus players live there for free, would the union frown on/prevent him from doing so? A ton of minor leaguers don’t make enough to pay rent so there’s a real need.

1:05
Eno Sarris: Sounds like something A-Rod would do, no lie.

1:05
A-Rod: for the record, I use cream

1:05
Eno Sarris: Well okay.

1:07
Fangraphsdango: How closely correlated are OPS+ and wRC+?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Pretty tight. But wRC+ better.

1:07
Eno Sarris:

1:07
STiVo: Going to Asheville for bachelor party in early June. What beer locations are can’t-miss?

1:08
Eno Sarris: Wicked Weed, Highland, Green Man, in that order.

1:08
Larry Bernandez: Soria is a Royal this year

1:09
Eno Sarris: Dammit. Mark Lowe.

1:09
GoBlue: I just got into grad school at Seattle U. Any advice on relocating out there?

1:09
Eno Sarris: Enjoy yourself. What a town. Get used to rain, of course, but great beer, great food, and when it’s sunny, everyone’s at the park.

1:09
BK:

1:10
Eno Sarris: Breaking the box plot.

1:10
Andy: Clay Buchholz. Boy, I dunno. What do you think?

1:10
Eno Sarris: Never was that into him, but holding tickets in 15+

1:10
Ryan: Andrew Cashners sad mountain man face zoom in after the Maeda HR yesterday is worth a watch. Poor Cash.

1:10
Eno Sarris: Needs to start hiding the fastball more I guess.

1:10
wee: Your preference in a triple slash – Khris Davis, Dickerson, Piscotty?

1:11
Eno Sarris: Dickerson is my ‘blink’ assessment.

1:11
Thugget Nectar: Raisel Igelsias and Derek Norris or Russel Martin and Tyson Ross – Keeper

1:11
Eno Sarris: Iglesias side. I normally take better bats, but catchers are another class of bat.

1:12
B.B. Rodriguez: Eno! What do you think of a real life trade of Jeremy Jeffress for Trevor Bauer. Indians get a good reliever. Brewers get a possible starter with upside. Similar team control.

1:12
Eno Sarris: If Cody impresses, could happen. Roster crunch coming fairly soon I think.

1:13
Piratz: Eno! deep draft this weekend, 14 teams, 7 STARTING outfielders. who should i target when we starting scraping the bottom?

1:14
Eno Sarris: You could buy a couple platoon guys like Coghlan, Seth Smith, guys like that. Rotate in from bench.

1:14
Chico Escuela: Dansby Swanson or JP Crawford?

1:14
Eno Sarris: JP FOR ME.

1:15
Lude Trivia: Question: I am the part of your body only lives for 7-10 days. What am I?

1:15
Eno Sarris: Umbilical cord?

1:15
Lude Trivia: Answer: Taste bud!

1:16
Eno Sarris: Mind. Blown. (Also why pizza mouth is temporary.)

1:16
Manny: This might be a dumb question, but I’m having a hard time finding a decent selection of sours. Where should I look? Grocery stores, liquor stores, etc.?

1:16
Eno Sarris: Gotta look craft beer / liquor. Goose Island Juliette and Halia are expensive but they are very good and you’ll see them first.

1:16
Steve: And I didn’t get my questions answered? WTH Eno?

1:16
Eno Sarris: 12:39.

1:16
Joe random: Watching the chris bassit start, he seems to have great stuff but the results aren’t quite there. What does he need to work on to take the next step?

1:17
Eno Sarris: refine the cutter/slider thing.

1:17
Sando Time: If you have to pick one sandwich meat for all time, what is it? The answer should be hot coppa.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Or soppresata.

1:17
STiVo: Just picked up a Sculpin variety pack at my local beer mart. What say you about pineapple sculpin? It’s new to me… and I love grapefruit and regular.

1:17
Eno Sarris: Pineapple, Regular, Grapefruit my favorite in that order.

1:17
yummy: tyler naquin or aaron hicks

1:17
Eno Sarris: Hicks.

1:18
STiVo: How many questions have you gotten about “when certain stats stabilize”? Long-time chatter who always gets irked about the assumption that starts are: fake… fake… fake… fake…… REAL TODAY START PAYING ATTENTION.

1:18
Eno Sarris: It’s all a continuum, and every stat gets slightly more believable as it gets more sample.

1:19
Justin: Can Pomeranz succed as a starter?

1:19
Eno Sarris: Maybe in SD, but I wouldn’t start him on the road. Two pitches, iffy command.

1:19
Bork: Anyone want thirty-eight JP Arencebia Jays jerseys I bought after his debut?

1:19
The Oriole Bird: Everybody gotta read The Warmth of Other Suns. Get to learning.

1:19
CamdenWarehouse: They’ve been chanting “Joey” in Baltimore.

1:19
Bork: It’s Cleveland, they pull Lebron’s clothes off a poster.

1:19
Eno Sarris: luded.

1:20
Zoey Saldana: Cashner poopy?

1:20
Eno Sarris: 12-15 teams… I’d drop for a guy like Sanchez. The fastball gives up homers and the secondary stuff is not as good as it looks.

1:20
Wardo: Own Pollock in a dynasty 12 tm mixed. Can swap him and Piscotty for Carlos Gomez. Pull the trigger?

1:21
Eno Sarris: Actually, the fact that Pollock’s injury was in a similar place, and he’s older than people think, that makes me look the other way on Gomez health issues. Give me Gomez.

1:21
BK: Eno have you seen Greg Zaun? He’s still really big and scary!

1:21
Eno Sarris: We’ve got the 1000 duck-sized horses to go up against his horse-sized duck though.

1:22
Sal: As a Melancon owner, should I be rostering Caminero? Watson is currently owned. I also lost Giles, and my other closers are Jansen and Osuna.

1:22
Eno Sarris: Doubt he’s worth the roster slot. Just grip your seat tightly.

1:22
Art Vandelay: You can hear the O’s fans chanting Rickard’s name over the broadcast…dude is already a Baltimore folk hero.

1:22
Eno Sarris: Reminds me of Sam Fuld.

1:23
Eric: omg 20 team leagues are so. deep.

1:23
Eno Sarris: We got a homer from Mark Canha off the wire last night!

1:23
Art Vandelay: The Naps were actually The Napoleons tho. I don’t think that would fly.

1:23
Eno Sarris: Imagine the mascot.

1:23
Future Rockstar: Tell me what songs you’d like to hear me play at open mic.

1:23
Eno Sarris:

1:23
Art Vandelay: Cleveland Steamers it is

1:24
Eno Sarris: Done. and imagine the mascot!

1:24
Dolemite: If Tropeano indeed gets the nod…. is he an insta add? Just how good can we expect him to be (periphs look mighty nice)?

1:24
Eno Sarris: Good stuff. insta add in deeper leagues.

1:25
Erik: Smooth, standard deliveries prevent injury and help control, but funky, deceptive deliveries are harder to hit. True as a general rule? And should pitchers optimize one way or the other, or aim for some mix?

1:25
Eno Sarris: I think I agree. But! There are ways to be deceptive without affecting repeatability which is the key to command and health. Imagine bringing the ball up in a long arm path behind you, or straight up by your head. All things equal, the one by the head is more deceptive and healthier.

1:26
Marty: Cmon the best constructed sandwich on wonder bread is a shitty sandwich. It’s all about the carb foundation first.

1:26
Eno Sarris: I use whatever bread is in my house, and I really enjoy my sandwiches, but it’s never wonder bread.

1:26
Shawn: What sandwich, when made properly has the highest SAR?

1:27
Eno Sarris: A wrinkle on my sandwich from yesterday might be nice: Soppresata, Cappicola, Sriracha-honey-mustard, avocado, montery jack, plus (I didn’t have this) jalapeno potato chips, on a kaiser bun.

1:27
Gest : 95 mph sinker from Charlie Morton?

1:27
Eno Sarris: Still only sinker curve.

1:27
Todd: Will Joe Ross figure the changeup out or end up as a reliever?

1:28
Eno Sarris: He Tyson.

1:28
Chat This: Any rauchbiers you like, Eno?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Really don’t dig on the style. Stone’s smoked vanilla was aight because the vanilla took the edge off.

1:28
Rabbinical College Guy: Who wins more games this year? Reds? Phillies? Braves? Why?

1:29
Eno Sarris: I like the Reds and Phillies rotations. Phillies have some nice young bats, Reds have Votto. Go Reds.

1:29
Biscuit: I recently moved to Seattle…there are numerous IPA’s in this part of the world.

1:29
Eno Sarris: Cloudburst and Holy Mountain were good!

1:29
Enzo Amore: Is there any reason to hold Chapman in a 10 tm roto?

1:29
Eno Sarris: Yes. Best reliever when he comes back.

1:30
Todd: You dropping McHugh for Aaron Sanchez?

1:30
Eno Sarris: Yes.

1:30
Rufus T. Firefly: I got blisters on my fingas!

1:30
Poo Pie: Poo Pie

1:30
Flunky the Skunky: I’MA STINK U

1:30
Eno Sarris: Huh.

1:30
Art Vandelay: Is it sour grapes when you think there’s collusion afoot? I just vetoed Miggy for Carlos Beltran. I just can’t see a world where that trade makes sense.

1:31
Eno Sarris: Well yes there are moments like these when I’ll get involved. But my line is way towards never veto.

1:31
FantasyMan: What is the advantage in batting the pitcher 8th instead of 9th?

1:31
Eno Sarris: I think it has to do with getting someone on base for the top of the lineup and also bringing in the pinch hitter earlier.

1:31
njs: wow, i had no idea the difference b/t hitting leadoff & 8/9 was 140 ABs… is it a linear decline through the order?

1:32
Eno Sarris: Kind of. It’s supposed to be about 14 PA per slot, but it sorta steam rolls near the bottom from what I’ve seen.

1:32
David: Does Boxberger get his job back? I might drop Kela for him since you don’t like the KK.

1:33
Eno Sarris: I like Kela some, but he’s being used before Dyson and hasn’t been fire yet. Box is on a team that shuttles guys in and out of the closer’s role, the Mike Shanahans of fantasy saves. I’d wait a week, there’s no reason for other people to pick up Box. plus he’s on DL, better to target another pitcher, drop Kela, DL Box, get another pitcher.

1:33
Joe: How do you see Russell moving up in that stacked lineup? Who’s spot is he taking? The top of the order is already set and has movable pieces to shift in and out in case of injuries (Fowler, Heyward, Zobrist). I’d be thrilled, just don’t see how Russell can move up to anything other than the 7th spot at best.

1:35
Eno Sarris: I think he could push Montero down easy. But I love love Russell and I could see him as a better fit than Zobrist, especially when Zobrist gets injured, chance to leap up.

1:35
Eno Sarris: Also remember I only gave him 40 PA back, so three spots from 9th on average.

1:36
Joe: Let’s say DeSclafani comes back this weekend and looks great. Does that immediately change your opinion on him as far as this season’s outlook? I know you were really high on him coming into the season, plus he had a great spring (increased k%). Just the injury holding him back.

1:36
Eno Sarris: Yeah I’m trying real hard to hold my shares.

1:36
Funions: Hitting up Tree House for the first time this weekend. I know my options will be limited to what’s available, but what have you had? What do you recommend?

1:36
Eno Sarris: Everything, not even kidding. All 4+ stars, mostly five.

1:36
Stan: I’m intrigued by Adam Conley. Should I be?

1:37
Eno Sarris: yeah, velocity up, great change, let’s see the breaking ball some more against LHB.

1:37
Eno Sarris: He could be Danks if the breaking ball doesn’t improve/hold up, or he could be Scott Kazmir.

1:38
Daniel: Can someone explain to me why Daniel Castro of the Braves is currently owned in 8.9% of ESPN leagues and one of the most popular adds this week? Is this a glitch or is Mama Castro playing in ten thousand fantasy leagues this year?

1:38
Eno Sarris: ESPN has him ranked highly for some reason, is all I got.

1:38
Joe: While you are in NYC, cross the river, stop in the dirty Jersey and hang with some of your buds who can’t make it to the meet up!

1:38
Eno Sarris: Former Jersey City resident here, whatup.

1:38
mtsw: Buddy of mine is starting a small brewery in Colorado. What’s a good gimmick or angle for him to stand out from the crowd?

1:38
Eno Sarris: Kill a style. or be known for crossover styles. The styles are the key.

1:39
Hannah Hochevar: Billy Preston or Johnny Preston, longterm music keeper league. Billy’s got the pedigree, but Johnny did “Running Bear.”

1:39
Eno Sarris: Look at that fro though.

1:39
GB: Always with the beer talk! How does this comic make you feel?: https://xkcd.com/1534/

1:39
Eno Sarris: Plenty of people feel that way. I don’t! Some beers are bad, some are good, some are insanely good.

1:40
Reinheitsgebot: I impressed my Austrian girlfriend with this little German vocabulary I learned from a previous chat.

1:40
Eno Sarris: Hey baby I want to peal your clothes off and repeal your Rheinheitsgebot.

1:41
lloyd: i work in a restaurant in sf with three beer taps. they want to change it up. what three different types of beer would you suggest? (variety is key). which actual examples would you suggest?

1:44
Eno Sarris: Saison/belgian pale for the belgian/light crowd, american pale ale / IPa for in between, one stout. Easy, available, great: Boulevard Tank 7, AleSmith Pale Ale, Old Rasputin. Those are national beers that would make most beer people in my life happy. Then you establish yourself and can play with each tap as you see fit.

1:44
Joe: With all of the things going against him (poor lineup, bad home park, etc.), why should I feel optimistic about Khris Davis this season?

1:45
Eno Sarris: Good exit velocity, Justin Upton type power that should still play in that park. Bad BA though maybe.

1:45
Ryan: Kyle Gibson, Cody Anderson, or Chris Tillman, who ya like least?

1:45
Eno Sarris: Still Gibson.

1:45
Big Joe Montferrant: Pined has trouble in very cold weather (Pine Tar remember..)

1:45
Eno Sarris: Yeah true, I did remember that.

1:45
Reginald Denton III: What is pizza mouth?

1:45
Eno Sarris: BURNED.

1:45
Jon: Is a gose considered a sour?

1:46
Eno Sarris: I think so. It’s tart.

1:46
Manny: Haven’t tried either Goose Island or Halia, looking forward to it. What do you consider an “expensive” beer?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Halia is $30 for a bomber, like a wine bottle. Sours go for that. You might find Almanac, which is $11 for a smaller bottle.

1:46
Randy Savage: Where does habanero sculpin rate on the sculpin list? You a fan of spicy food?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Like spicy food hate spicy beer.

1:47
Mr. Wrestling IV: Re: Raisel v. Tyson Ross: Aren’t we getting a little ahead of ourselves? Isn’t Tyson Ross basically at Iglesias’ upside now?

1:47
Eno Sarris: Raisel has more pitches, so his upside is better.

1:47
Jon: Is it worth a bench spot to platoon two catchers in a one catcher league? Say d’Arnaud and Grandal?

1:47
Eno Sarris: I don’t bother. Hold Grandal until healthy and then shop TDA though.

1:48
Jake: Trevor May looked… is that guy gonna close?

1:48
Eno Sarris: Yeah I bet he’s their next closer.

1:48
Ryan: SANDWICHGRAPHS! dibs.

1:48
Snarfle: Grilled cheese is the Logan Forsythe of sandwiches.

1:48
Horn Please ThankYou: Rauchbier, aka “Why did you make my otherwise nice beer taste like smoked salmon?”

1:48
Eno Sarris: Nice.

1:48
Eno Sarris: I can’t catch up!

1:48
i hate my team: it’s Soppressata you fool!

1:48
Eno Sarris: I can’t spell those meats.

1:49
Kion: I work next to Trillium in Boston, what should I get there?

1:49
Eno Sarris: The pale ales. They all good. Also go to Row 47 I think it’s called, you’ve probably been.

1:49
Ben: Nothing special scoring wise, my Matt Duffy, Panik and Cole Hamels for his Betts, Rodon and d’Arnaud. I currently have Realmuto as my only catcher rostered. Easy yes, correct?

1:50
Eno Sarris: yeah.

1:50
anon: really just take a second and try to appreciate the ridiculous talent that entered the league last year. you have monsters like bryant, russell, sano and syndergaard all debuting and that doesn’t even include correa who is literally superman. absurd.

1:50
Eno Sarris: yeah and this year will be a letdown comparatively. just because you can’t do that again.

1:50
Jim: Wait and see mode on Jess Hahn, who I traded Frankie Montas for. Staying rotation for good? obviously depends on his outing

1:50
Eno Sarris: Good velocity in spring. I wait.

1:51
Kion: Is there a link to beergraphs where you list the top beers for a place (ie. Trillium)

1:52
The other Kyle: #8 pick in NL-only prospects draft….who’s your pick between: Margot, B. Phillips, A. Reyes, DeLeon, N. Williams, G. Torres, Rockies guys (Wall, McMahon, Dahl)

1:52
Eno Sarris: B Phillips, Dahl, Williams in that order.

1:52
LBJ: Heading to Denver next week for a conference. I know there are infinite brewery options there. What are your must hit breweries and beers? Maybe 3 of each.

1:53
Eno Sarris: Crooked Stave for everything. Funkwerks for saisons and Tropic King. And probably Oskar Blues, but I could be convinced on that one.

1:53
Berto: Kluber (Surly Furious) for Wacha (Two Hearted) and Sanchez (8 Bit)? Which you drinking tonight?

1:53
Eno Sarris: Furious.

1:53
NYC Beer: You could meet up at Rattle n hum, much better beer than foley’s.

1:53
Eno Sarris: I know people are a fan, but I have to know more about size.

1:54
Brian S: Have you had Ballast Point’s Watermelon Dorado? It’s truly the worst bottled beverage I’ve ever tasted, and this from a guy who gives Hell or High Watermelon 4.5 stars

1:54
Eno Sarris: hated. it.

1:54
Horn Please ThankYou: Re: Denver breweries. Go to Yak & Yeti, it is the only Indian/Nepali restaurant + brewery you will ever see in your life

1:54
Eno Sarris: Ok I have to go! I do! it’s been fun!!
