Eno Sarris Baseball Chat — 8/10/17

1:39
Eno Sarris: Apparently this is obpmusic, so it can get on base or what

12:00
Eno Sarris: Let’s!

12:00
Hannah Hochevar: Vampire Tanaka struggled in the evening last night. Was it the dome? Or is there just no rhyme/reason at this point?

12:01
Eno Sarris: As much as I’ve advocated for the no fastball approach, I think it might lead to this sort of thing. Dave Righetti once told me that if you throw that many sliders, you’ll lose it for stretches. He was talking about Romo, who was the original All Breaking Ball Guy.

12:01
Jose: Has the flyball / swing revolution reached the minors? If not, how might that impact guys who look ready to make an impact?

12:02
Eno Sarris: Every day sees more FanGraphs readers in the minor leagues. Absolutely sure there are guys we can find. Look at Hoskins, he’s hitting 50% fly balls and loving life. Ryder Jones just told me he used plate discipline (like Bruce) to lift the ball better.

12:03
MM: Thoughts on Chad Pinder? Obviously the most minuscule of sample sizes, but his defense in an OF corner looks FANTASTIC. Think he could hit enough to warrant an everyday RF spot?

12:04
Eno Sarris: There’s a guy that flipped his batted ball profile in the minors and is showing great power in the bigs. Looks a bit like Ryon Healy out there, but you’re right the OF glove is fantastic. To the point that I might try him in center. Dude was a shortstop not too long ago.

12:04
Uncle Rico: Talks of the Yanks as AL East Champs and Red Sox demise premature or will it still end up that way?  Sox are rollin’

12:05
Eno Sarris: I picked the Yanks as the wild card and am sticking with it. Tho, if you look at the Sox with the right kind of eyes, the team doesn’t look amazing.

12:05
Eno Sarrismucci: HEY! The Smooch is here!

12:05
Nihilist Eno: It’s hard to care about the dog days of august when facing the dog days of eternity.

12:06
Uncle Rico: is this thing on?

12:06
Eno Sarris: Man I had to search to finish off that interlude.

12:07
Hannah Hochevar: Curious for your take on the O’s and Hellboy. He’s looked ok in 2 starts, but it was super dumb, right?

12:07
Eno Sarris: They had like a 5% chance of going to the playoffs, right? But yeah, I mean they keep trading (they were second heaviest traders since 2000 in our study) and that has something to do with why they haven’t ‘found’ a back end pitcher in their own system.

12:07
Michael: Why would you go on that hacky radio station 95.7 the game? Youre better than those neanderthals Eno

12:08
Eno Sarris: Sooo were you listening or? Haha, I don’t mind them at all. The other main choice in the area is pretty staid, sometimes downright boring.

12:09
LegallyEagle: I feel disappointed that the Yankees are breaking from tradition and putting names on their jerseys. If there was ONE team that could’ve just told MLB “naw, pass” to a cheesy promotional gag.

12:09
Uncle Rico: These nickname jerseys are terrible.  That being said, what would yours say?

12:10
Eno Sarris: I don’t hate this at all. I had a lot of fun looking through each team and seeing a) who didn’t participate at alls and b) what they put on the jerseys. Some were boring, the uniforms look terrible, but the idea? I don’t hate the idea at all.

12:11
Eno Sarris: In reality, I’d probably be boring and just put Eno on there, though I do like the idea of just having a first name and that’s it. Tempted to put my middle school nickname (Enis the Penis) on there, would never put high school dorm nickname on there (Dink, because I grew a foot and added fifteen pounds in four years).

12:11
Reginald Denton III: Where does Paxton rank for you at the moment?

12:11
Eno Sarris: Top fifteen at worst.

12:12
Sterling Mallory Chris Archer: Where is Whit Merrifield going to be drafted next year? Is he a legit 5 category player?

12:13
Eno Sarris: Here’s perhaps a surprising answer: yes. Looks like a good hit tool to me: power and contact. Power enough, and more fly balls than ground balls, that I’m going to give him an average ISO or slightly better. Stole bases at every level. Doubt he goes real high, but he’s a good player.

12:14
jjp: Who do the Mets go after in the offseason? Lots of money coming off the books this year.

12:16
Eno Sarris: Lorenzo Cain and Mike Moustakas and a boring vet pitcher like Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Jaime Garcia… there are actually a bunch of pitchers like this going on the market, I think they’ll get one. Chris Tillman, Clayton Richard. Jeremy Hellickson.

12:16
Buff: Thoughts on Chris Flexen? Is he better than his major league numbers would indicate?

12:18
Eno Sarris: His fastballs are pretty bad. Back end guy. Maybe if he really pushes that percentage down while keeping walks down he can be their sixth guy next year.

12:18
Zac: Eno!   I’m in second place in a 10-team dynasty and I’m within reach.  My hitting sucks and I’ve been Goldy/Barreto for Robles/Vlad Jr./Juan Soto.   Pull the trigger?

12:18
Eno Sarris: Yeah I’d do it.

12:19
Eno Sarris: Vlad and Robles are good but very young. Even if they hit their ceilings, you’ll have a chance to buy the next guys like that in the meantime, and you’re a contender.

12:19
Zonk: The Cubs, after a hot streak post-break, are back in the mud, and just lost their hottest hitter (Contreras).  78% to win the Division seems high to me, as nearly every player continues to under perform.  What is your take?

12:20
Eno Sarris: That under performance is the key. Projections have them playing to their norms and that’s the source of the odds. I still see them as favorites.

12:20
Bink: How do you see the Braves clearing the way for Acuna in 2018? Who goes Kemp or Markakis?

12:20
Eno Sarris: I doubt either has any value. Maybe Markakis just slides into fourth role.

12:20
Davy: Hey Eno, visiting my beer fan brother this weekend and thought I’d try to bring a bottle or two for him. Any good NYC beers he doesn’t normally see in DC? (Unfortunately I’m really far from the Single Cut brewery.) Thank you!

12:21
Eno Sarris: Cans travel best. Other Half, Grimm, Threes all close, distributed in the city, get an IPA from any. Grimm bottles great sours, too.

12:21
Eno Sarris: (though don’t get the raspberry pop, the one with lactose, that was p gross)

12:21
Kiermaier’s Piercing Green Eyes: Wilson Ramos has a 32 wRC+ and has been below replacement level. What’s the problem?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Coming off knee surgery, was at his best in a year or two of peak performance so outsized expectations?

12:22
JD15: Hoskins expectations?

12:22
Eno Sarris: Two fly balls for every ground ball, I see a low BA and tons of power.

12:22
Eno Sarris:

12:23
Eno Sarrismucci: I love the dark overlord. I’m very loyal to the dark overlord. The dark overlord has the best graphs. The dark overlord is a passionate love maker. I love the dark overlord.

12:24
mario mendoza: Who’s the best CHC SP right now?

12:25
Eno Sarris: Kyle Hendricks, Michael Fulmer, Jason Vargas?

12:25
Paul: How do you see the Braves rotation shaping up heading into 2018? Will they finally add a TOR arm or just depend on kids, Soroka, Newk, Fried, Gohara in addition to Folty and Teheran

12:25
Eno Sarris: I could see them signing people in the Colon/Dickey mold again. Maybe one with a bit more upside, if they can’t pull one of these trades they’ve been trying to pull.

12:25
John: Hi Eno, are there any studies showing that hitters struggle going from facing a low-velo to a high-velo pitcher in one game or vice-versa?  Dave mentioned he thinks Aroldis should start the WC game and I was wondering if you could order the pitchers by velo as well as handedness to mess with the other lineup

12:26
Eno Sarris: Barry Bonds just went off on this recently during a game. I’d like to study it. He said ‘specialist’ though, said it was hard to adjust after seeing a specialist. I was thinking of defining that sort of player as someone who threw 40%+ of a non fastball, or had a top 10% or bottom 10% arm angle, or was in the top 10% of velo.. then you have to look for the knuckleball type hangover.

12:27
E: What is your go to drink at a wedding with an open bar?

12:27
Eno Sarris: I like dark and stormies, vodka tonics, but these days I pretty much stick to the beer because I’m in charge of two little people.

12:27
botchatheny:

12:28
Jake: The Angels are so strange. They have possibly the greatest player ever in center, and a now possibly elite short stop in his prime. The perfect core players to have but then almost nothing else and little in the farm system. Do you think those two will ever end up in the playoffs with the Angels?

12:28
Eno Sarris: Yes. I do actually. The wild card means they just need to get a little better and maybe get a little bit of Heaney/Richards luck next year.

12:28
Bork: How much of a risk is Rhys?

12:28
Eno Sarris: 24 years old. Could come in at peak value.

12:28
natsfan: Do you agree with Dave Cameron on the merits of Oakland’s Mat Olsen and Matt Chapman?

12:30
Eno Sarris: All in on Chapman. I believe in the D and power, and that gives him a high ceiling. I need to watch more Olson. 40% strikeouts still too much today.

12:30
2-D: Do you think they should move in fences at AT&T?

12:31
Eno Sarris: Yes. Every extreme park has brought the fences in. It makes it hard to attract free agents and it kills development. Development is at least some part confidence, and imagine being a guy like Ryder Jones, come up with power, and see everything die on the track. That’s why the Giants have found only contact position guys, the Mariners and Padres and Mets made their parks more neutral.

12:32
Eno Sarris: crooner kick today

12:33
RotoLando: Is Brandon Drury any good?  Is he just the victim of too many MI in ARI?

12:33
Eno Sarris: dude is good, but I think the problem is less Descalso as lack of lefties in the lineup? Drury seems obviously better than DD.

12:34
Zonk: There appears to be an extreme inbalance in the value of pitcher WAR vs. position player WAR in trades and other transactions.  Do you anticipate that continuing into the offseason?   Is it possible that teams are trying to trade for pitching and buy hitting, in order to avoid dead money on an injured pitcher contract?

12:35
Eno Sarris: I think it’s also related to supply and demand with the new power levels. Seems pretty easy to find a hitter these days. And power suppression the hardest thing to guarantee on a pitcher, so you trade for a pitcher who’s a) not injured and b) suppressing power currently.

12:35
D’Angelo: Favorite mid-atlantic IPA?

12:35
Eno Sarris: Full Tilt Hops the Cat. Double Duckpin. Anything from Tired Hands and Pizza Boy.

12:36
Eno Sarris: I’ll add some Dirt Wolf.

12:36
dyNASTY: when’s our boy Willie comin to Arlington?

12:37
Eno Sarris: Next year, at first/corner OF? He’s not pushing Gallo Mazara Choo off right now. Maybe he pushes Napoli and Choo in September, Choo to DH?

12:37
Martin: Asdrubal Cabrera has a -10.7 BsR in only 87 games played. The worst BsR season of all time (Billy Butler, 2012) was -12.7 in 161 games.

12:38
Gub Gub: Can Steven Brault find any success in the majors?

12:39
Eno Sarris: Bro? I don’t even know. Has good run on his pitches, okay breaker, but that change is flatter than his sinker and doesn’t have good velo gap.

12:39
PNW Raggae: Eno, ever stream KEXP Positive Vibrations? It’s an awesome Seattle-based indie station but Sat am from 9-12 is reggae and it’s the soundtrack of my weekend

12:39
Eno Sarris: Perfect timing, often in yard with boys then. I’ll look for it. Even though it sounds like an adult toy store.

12:39
Q-Ball: I don’t understand “Vampire Tanaka”.  Vampires do well at night, and hate the day.

12:40
Eno Sarris: Tanaka has been worse in the day his career and this year has been atrocious in the day.

12:40
Eno Sarris: His cutter flattens out during the day. That’s all I got.

12:40
Eno Sarris: Sorry sinker.

12:41
Newest Met Ryder Ryan: Are you excited for Dom Smith to come up now that the Mets traded Bruce for little ol’ me?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Yah I would like to see what he can do. He hits too many ground balls for me to believe in a lot of power, though.

12:42
Houzer: will calling the high strike be the kryptonite to the fly ball revolution?

12:42
Eno Sarris: Not necessarily. Above the belt is still better, all things equal, for launch angles. It’s certain swings that can’t get the barrel to those balls, not all.

12:43
Ze Germans!: Marquez is very good, no?

12:44
Eno Sarris: Can he continue to suppress homers? Might want to see more sliders or changeups. I’ll go with good.

12:45
Johnny5alive: #lolmets. Two better prospects from the Yanks but they’re have to pay some money? Not the wilpons. This team is a joke

12:46
Eno Sarris: It was pointed out to me that there’s a competition effect — don’t want to improve the crosstown rivals — but that seems shortsighted. Worry about your own team. And for the prospect to be worth more than $2million, he had to be in the top 200. I guess maybe the guys they were offered weren’t that good?

12:46
Busy Bee: Will Brent Honeywell be called up anytime soon?

12:46
Eno Sarris: I think he’s next. De Leon left his last start with mid-80s velo.

12:46
Rasouddress: Are you on Team Chaos, Eno? M’s, Rays, Angels, Twins, O’s, Royals, and Yankees all tying for the 1st/2nd WC would give us the EOS of the century.

12:46
Eno Sarris: Always. Love those crazy last days. AL Wild Card for the win.

12:48
Kevin: Why in the world is Snitker playing Matt Adams in Left Field?

12:49
Eno Sarris: His organization has a different idea about the value of defense?

12:50
TRANE: Thoughts on Grienke? Seems he throws slower pitches as the game goes along.

12:51
Eno Sarris: I don’t think this is out of line http://www.brooksbaseball.net/velo.php?player=425844&b_hand=-1&gFilt=&… and though he throws fewer fastballs as the game goes on, so does everyone http://www.brooksbaseball.net/outcome.php?player=425844&b_hand=-1&gFil…

12:52
JKD: You buying Wilmer Difo as a potentially league-average-or-above hitter? Since he started playing every day at the end of June, he’s run a 10.7% BB rate, 16.5% K rate, .136 ISO (and a .402 BABIP that inflates his overall line – though, he’s pretty fast so a .340 or so true talent isn’t crazy). And he’s hit a couple of no-doubter home runs, so maybe his bat is actually an everyday one?

12:52
Eno Sarris: I dunno, two ground balls for every fly ball, not a lot of power history, I think more like a .120 Iso is true talent, a few too many strikeouts for a guy with his profile, looks like a (good) third middle infielder to me.

12:54
Mr. Interlude: Who better to create the interludiest of interlude than Mr. Interlude himself!

12:54
RotoLando: If not for the curls, you could pull off a decent “I’m not saying it’s aliens…but it’s aliens” Guy look for Halloween.

12:54
Frank: Is Red Hot sauce hot because it’s red or red because it’s hot?

12:54
Eno Sarris: Aight, that’s better.

12:54
Eric: Time to drop Cahill in a 12-teamer?

12:55
Eno Sarris: yeah.

12:55
Porcho Villa: Are you encouraged by Alex Wood showing better velocity last night, or still concerned that he’s worn down?

12:56
Eno Sarris: He can make it work at 91. I’m not so worried.

12:56
mike sixel: How does Colon do this?

12:56
Eno Sarris: Front. Door. Sinkers.

12:56
Porcho Villa: Are you starting Carlos Rodon tonight against HOU? He’s been dominant over his last two starts and walks are down. But tough draw.

12:56
Eno Sarris: Mostly not. But holding him.

12:56
dustyfingers: What’s your take on what Ketel Marte is doing. xStats says he has .406 xOBA for the year. Only 77 ABs but still.

12:57
Eno Sarris: Massive change in batted ball mix, even from the minors. Lets’ see him continue with the 1 to 1 and then I’ll buy above average power.

12:57
dave in slc: nl only if you can only pick up one of hoskins and smith which one do you go with?

12:57
Eno Sarris: Hoskins. For fantasy for sure.

12:58
BoSox: What doesn’t look that great about the Red Sox team? Just because they’re missing middle of the order power?

12:58
Eno Sarris: Betts and Sale and Kimbrel are great and all, but I get more of a ‘no holes’ vibe than a ‘fully laden’ feeling.

12:58
mike sixel: Not having names on jerseys is stupid. It really discourages the casual fan. really stupid.

12:59
Eno Sarris: Never been a fan of that. Sometimes for selfish reasons, and especially in Spring Training.

12:59
Keith Hernandez: Eno!  My girlfriend was never a beer drinker but I recently got her into sours.  Victory Sour Monkey was the one that did it.  Any other good sours you can recommend from Northeast breweries?

12:59
Eno Sarris: Allagash has a bunch that are great. Grimm is hit or miss. You can easily find the Goose Island sour sisters.

1:00
dustyfingers: What do you think of brews with brettanomyces?

1:00
Eno Sarris: I’m a fan, especially when it’s paired with some hops like citra.

1:00
Enis the Penis: Will. Never. Unsee.

1:00
Eno Sarris: Wait I got some XYZ going on or

1:01
Porcho Villa: What does one do with Sean Manaea? He was dominant for a while but now hasn’t gotten out of the fourth inning in two straight starts.

1:01
Eno Sarris: Hold. Has the weapons.

1:01
Eduardo Trueba: Can Mike Trout still win MVP?

1:01
Eno Sarris: Yes! Amazing.

1:01
hscer: At the same price, but otherwise generally speaking across various formats, who are the most keepable of: Clevinger Wacha Lamet Corbin Nova Folty Cobb?

1:02
Eno Sarris: Wacha fully ahead of rest IMO. I like Lamet too but cream of second class.

1:02
Buff: KATOH’s Midseason Top 100 likes Ryder Jones. What think you. Does he have a chance to get significant PT for the Giants next year?

1:03
Eno Sarris: He significantly changed his batted ball mix. I want him to play more than Pablo down the stretch so we can get a good look. Rather see more of him now to see if it’s real than Arroyo even, Arroyo seems like another panik/duffy and this team needs a power threat.

1:03
Shawn: Isn’t your nickname Stat Boy?

1:03
Eno Sarris: Well done.

1:04
ATCQ: What are your thoughts on Chad Kuhl and Trevor Williams emerging as solid back-end starters for the Bucs this year?  Does this mean they should focus more on the pen over the winter, or do they need to try for another SP?

1:04
Eno Sarris: Kuhl looks legit but I think Trevor’s still searching for a third pitch. They’ll sign one of that bunch I listed above.

1:05
Rapha: What’s Alex Meyer’s ceiling? And what are the chances a healthy Meyer reaches that in 2018?

1:05
Eno Sarris: Michael Pineda? Big velo, iffy command, no changeup? Would have to aim for middle of the plate and get the walk rate down, and he’ll give up homers then.

1:05
Hannah Hochevar: When life gives you poor sp’s, make spades.

1:05
Hannah Hochevar: When life gives you gators, make gatorade.

1:05
Hannah Hochevar: When life gives you bands, make band-aids.

1:06
Tim: I am WAY too busy at work for you to spring this on me right now.

1:06
Eno Sarris: I know, right?

1:06
Tim: Anyway, please throw me some buy-low pitcher names?

1:07
Eno Sarris: Samardzija, Carrasco, Yu, Qintana, deeper: Corbin, Gauman, Kuhl.

1:08
Marty: Whenever someone posts a screenshot of their browser I will always immediately look at their other open tabs

1:08
Eno Sarris: FanGraphs, Brooks Baseball, Baseball Savant times 40

1:09
v2micca: So, I know the A’s are required to be frugal, but I recently read a fan post justifying the Josh Donaldson trade as they would have likely been unable to afford the 20+ million a season for his arbitration years.  Is Oakland really that cheap that they wouldn’t be willing to pay 20 million for Donaldson’s MVP years?

1:09
Eno Sarris: I don’t think they’ve ever paid a player $20 million a year, so yes.

1:10
Eno Sarris: dancer dude

1:10
Eno Sarris: I’m a whole page behind sorry

1:10
ATCQ: Personal theory: most likely destination for Moustakas is LAA.  He’s from there, they have money to spend, a need at the position, and a need for star-level talent to complement Trout/Simmons.

1:11
Eno Sarris: Yeah and The Mets could use Lo Cain more, maybe. If they have money.

1:12
Troutmaggedon: Thoughts on Reynaldo Lopez?

1:12
Eno Sarris: Still has a low-spin, flat fastball. I remain unconvinced that he’s going to strike out as many as his projections or have an ERA under 4.2

1:12
joe: is severino an ace?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Yes. 75 fastball, 65 slider, 45-50 change. Figured out how to use the change tho it’s not amazing.

1:13
Marty: what do you do when the first place team is 20 pts ahead of the second place team, and you’re in third place 8 back of second? Ugh.

1:13
Eno Sarris: Hold.

1:13
Bruce Bocce: Was riding high in my AL Keeper, but the rival just went all in and now there’s no one left to acquire. Do I push in the chips for mediocre talent or let the ship sink?

1:13
Eno Sarris: Hold.

1:14
Eno Sarris: I mean these aren’t great situations to spend in. Maybe you can find a minor deal that help. All in doesn’t always work and if there’s no supply…

1:14
Troutmaggedon: Is Cotton just a total whiff or does he still have a chance to regroup in the offseason and become a solid starter?

1:15
Eno Sarris: I see above-average (not elite) whiffs on the four-seam, cutter, and change. Velo good, perceived velo terrible. I’ll buy in the deepest of leagues but he really needs to find something and I don’t have an easy answer.

1:15
Zac: Losing weight would be easy if beer wasn’t so delicious.

1:15
Eno Sarris: you said it man

1:15
Michael Humstein: Woodruff?  What thinks Ye?

1:16
Eno Sarris: Yes. Buy. Heavy ass fastball, great slider, great movement on change even if no whiffs last night. Buy Buy buy

1:17
Zed: For how much longer do you think Posey retains his title as the best hitting catcher in baseball? 1-2 more years until yielding it to Gary?

1:17
Eno Sarris: could lose it next year

1:17
Troutmaggedon: I think you meant Markakis slides into the 4-hole so he can keep driving in runs to pad that HOF resume.

1:17
ATCQ: What are your thoughts on the Nitro milk stout, and on milk stouts in general?

1:17
Eno Sarris: put it in my belly?

1:17
botchatheny: i’m sure you’ve answered this a bajillion times but…breweries or drinking establishments in boston i should go to next week?  will basically be by stadium most of trip

1:18
Eno Sarris: Just do the Cambridge run that I did last weekend: Lamplighter plus Lord Hobo, with a possible Meadhall stop.

1:18
Troutmaggedon: Had any beers from Kern River Brewing? Small operation that’s seeping out a bit. They good.

1:18
Eno Sarris: Yessssssss

1:18
Tony: Sounds like Fulmer will start next week… if you’re contending this year, do you continue to roll with him down the stretch or try to swap him out for someone without injury concerns?

1:18
Eno Sarris: Keep him.

1:18
PTBNL:

1:18
Eno Sarris: Josh Phegley putting music in our chat

1:18
zack: i’ve heard nothing but optimistic things about dominic smith, but a baseball writer (mets fan) i trust recently said he’s crap and nothing to be excited about. what do i believe?

1:19
Eno Sarris: Good d and discipline, will have to change batted ball mix like Josh Bell did to be as good as Josh Bell with bat. Will not be Bell with glove.

1:19
Derp: Eric Haase is another member of the minor league launch angle kick…http://waitingfornextyear.com/2017/07/notes-from-akron-eric-haase-laun…

1:20
Guest: how do i see pitch type spilts for a pitcher AS a BATTER

1:20
Eno Sarris: uh… I think you’re overthinking things. you can switch to the ‘batter’ view on pitchers in FG, that’s probably as deep as you should go haha. Brooks gives you a ‘batter’ choice.

1:20
TRANE: what is the best early 80’s funk band?

1:21
Eno Sarris: Neville Brothers?

1:21
Steve: your politics disgust me

1:21
Eno Sarris: man and I show so very little of them.

1:21
Eno Sarris: it’s okay anyway I disgust myself regularly. you should smell me some mornings.

1:21
Eno Sarris: (wait no please don’t)

1:22
AuntieSue: Why isn’t there a WAR for managers? Are Teams looking into this?

1:22
Eno Sarris: I’m sure they do have some research into this. I tried. It’s very difficult. I would assume they are worth a win or two at best.

1:22
Aaron: I was farting around on Fangraphs recently and came across Rafael Belliard’s player page.  He played in parts of 17 Major League seasons and accrued -1.2 WAR for his career through 2500 plate appearances (and hit only 2 career home runs!).  His 1993 was particularly fascinating because he appeared in 91 games with only 89 PA’s, essentially being used as a late game defensive replacement for a Braves team that fizzled out in the NLCS.  He was never worth less than -1.0 WAR or more than +0.7 WAR in a season.  Given what the modern front office understands about the value of roster spots we may never see another player with a similar career.

1:23
Eno Sarris: Weren’t the Cora brothers similar? Yeah I think that job in particular just goes to a prospect / player under team control now.

1:23
Justin Verlander: Am I back?! Been great for the past month. Another 8 IP 0 ER last night.

1:23
Eno Sarris: I’ve been cautiously in on him all year because the velo and spin has been there.

1:23
NinetyNine: I expect Brian Cashman to be re-hired as baseball head ops./Head of department whatever, and hire a gm under him, and Girardi too as long as they make the wild card, am I off?

1:25
Eno Sarris: Yeah there are no problems in the Bronx right now. Would be cool if he elevated Fishman, who started in the analytics department and has ascended to AGM.

1:26
Oddball Herrera: Go to http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/mlb/news/prospects/index.jsp?c_id=oak I can’t stop laughing at the Nick Allen picture…priceless. “Nick Allen, the moment after someone trod upon his foot with a cleat”

1:27
Eno Sarris: has the air of despair about him

1:27
Hank: Do you think Teheran can bounce back? Going from a #2 type starter to arguably worst pitcher in baseball just isn’t believable. 26 years old, friendly contract, healthy, durable track record.

1:27
Eno Sarris: Lost the change and then lost the slider… Should be able to at least get the slider back.

1:28
D’Angelo: Least favorite style of beer?

1:28
Eno Sarris: Really not into Quads. I just get so much fruit, sweetness, and alcohol.

1:28
Bruce Bocceball: How would you move in the fences at AT&T? Seems you’d have to completely reconstruct the stadium.

1:29
Eno Sarris: Eh it’s not so hard, you add a new section and brand it “Anchor Steam Alley” slap a sign on it to pay for the work.

1:30
Blinkin’ Fertilizer: Can Chris Taylor really keep this up all year or should I look to deal him before he comes crashing down in the fantasy playoffs?

1:32
Eno Sarris: Bought him in my keeper league earlier in season as a throw-in, and now I have people trying to get him from me. Obviously a .400 BABIP is not happening, but dude hits the ball hard and has that nice 1-to-1 GB/FB that could lead to all around goodness. Steals bases. yeah, might hit .270, but otherwise all systems go. xStats says .276/.346/.461 and I’ll buy that.

1:32
Breezy: How much do Miguel Cabrera’s under-performing statistics stem from Comerica possibly juicing numbers?

1:32
Eno Sarris: A lot. Check out his swing speed numbers. Oof.

1:33
ATCQ: Who’s even worth it in FA this year?  Darvish, maybe Tanaka, maybe Lynn/Garcia, Davis/Holland, Moose/Cain…that’s it?

1:33
Eno Sarris: I think, if those later pitchers like Tillman and Hellickson are cheap, I like buying in that group. Cheapish vet fourth SP looks like a good spot to be looking.

1:34
lake: Eno, have you taken a look at Yelich lately? More flyballs! ISO at .250 since all star break. Could this be it!

1:34
Eno Sarris: YELICH FLY BALL ALERT MAN YOUR BATTLE STATIONS

1:35
Mike: A. Rosario just got dropped post call up hype because he struggled his first week. What do you expect rest of way? I’m thinking he turns it on because he looks comfortable considering that play he made yesterday

1:35
Eno Sarris: .260 with speed?

1:36
Eno Sarrismucci: Stream my paesano Nick Pivetta against the Mets tomorrow?

1:36
Eno Sarris: yes. Good four-seam, slider, no idea why his curve is giving up so many homers.

1:36
JayRod: If Jordan Montgomery is allowed to pitch another 60ish innings but CC is hurt, do they just burn him and hope they dont need him in the postseason?

1:36
Eno Sarris: Bet they use Cessa first and mix and match because I’d rather have Cessa in postseason pen and JM starting.

1:36
Phil McCraken: Any reason to think Skaggs will be good down the stretch?

1:37
Eno Sarris: Projections. That’s about it.

1:37
J: Hey Eno, where can I find swinging strike %’s for each pitchers pitch? I used to be able to find it but it seems like it’s been taken out?

1:38
Eno Sarris: Gotta use BrooksBaseball.net for that for a bit. It’s coming, but it’s not there right now. We switched over to their pitch classifications and have to move things around.

1:38
I like big parks: Bigger parks mean faster games and presumably fewer injuries. These seem like bigger benefits than player egos

1:39
Eno Sarris: I’ve never seen those first two things proven! Interesting theories.

1:39
Zonk: Quintana has been a little off lately, on top of a down year.  Cause for concern?  Are there signs of decline, or is this just luck/noise?

1:40
Eno Sarris: Never had a good change and now he’s losing command of the curve a bit, but will that command just go away and not come back? I don’t think he’s done yet.

1:40
Travis: Think Ozzie Albies’ .150 BABIP sticks?

1:40
Eno Sarris: Would be the first guy ever. Look at that gb/fb mix I love it love it. great contact, patience. I’m into this guy.

1:41
ATCQ: My GF says you look like a serial killer.

1:42
Eno Sarris: So she sees the Jack White thing. Tell her about the Kenny G thing.

1:43
ATCQ: Is Garrett Cooper about to become a dude?

1:43
Eno Sarris: a dude but not a Dude.

1:43
Mike: Best Willson Contreras replacement (shallow league): Schwarber, Beef Castillo, Vazquez, Russell Martin?

1:44
Eno Sarris: Beef.

1:44
Mike Francesa: The first piece of music I bought was a cassette single of C&C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat.”

1:44
Eno Sarris: Hah. I think I hat Ice T Original Gangster but I bought that one around the same time.

1:44
Snarfle: Why are there no movies where fog is a benevolent spirit that assists the good guys in times of need?

1:44
Eno Sarris: Because fog is cold and wet.

1:45
Shawn: What were your favorite beers from Boston? Hope you stocked up on Trillium while there!

1:45
Eno Sarris: Really enjoyed Lamplighter. Soft as a pillow.

1:45
MM: KATOH really, really, almost absurdly loves Boog Powell. Any thoughts on him?

1:46
Eno Sarris: I think it must want him to play center field, and his last team started moving him off center. If he can’t play center, he has a lot in common with Ben Revere.

1:46
Harper: I’m visiting LA for the first time next month. Where near Dodger Stadium do I want to go to eat a good meal and drink great beer before a game?

1:46
Eno Sarris: Sunset Beer Company for the beer. I’m not as sure about the meal.

1:46
John: Is the balls juiced in the minors? Or should we see increases in power when guys get called up?

1:47
Eno Sarris: Different balls. Yeah, that’s why I’m looking at minor league ground ball fly ball mix and mentally adding a bit of power to guys like Albies.

1:47
Adam: Sours from the Northeast rec: Long Trail Cranberry Gose

1:48
Bryce: THIS CHAT NEEDS A JOEY GALLO MENTION

1:48
Eno Sarris: done

1:49
Eno Sarris: I mean I don’t know what to say. Five years ago, this type of player would have no place in the game. 60% fly balls? unheard of. Now he’s 15+% better than league average..

1:49
PTBNL: Is there a fangraphs staff fantasy football league? Or are you guys all baseball all the time?

1:49
Eno Sarris: I’m totally out on football, can’t speak for rest of crew.

1:50
Crasner’s Crypt: Weight loss – I cut the high fructose corn syrup and kept the beer. It has worked for me.

1:50
Eno Sarris: Yeah it’s so addicting though. I’m going to smack my hand before adding sweet to anything.

1:50
Sleepy: RE:  the A’s paying Donaldson $20 million

1:50
Sleepy: This…

1:50
Sleepy: …is still the biggest contract in A’s history.

1:51
Billy McKinney!: Billy McKinney! Billy McKinney Billy McKinney Billy McKinney Billy McKinney buh?

1:51
Eno Sarris: Just traded for him. Hoping the new fly ball rate is real because if he has power and contact he’s interesting again.

1:51
Shawn: Curious your take on Lord Hobo? They are kind of seen as a joke around here (CT), mainly because Boom Sauce is the “Bro” craft beer. However, I think Glorious is great. Curious to get your thoughts on LH, especially compared to what’s on the West Coast for NE-Style IPAs

1:52
Eno Sarris: Just had a Glorious and tho I wouldn’t necessarily put it in the top 5, I really liked it.

1:52
Happy Hour: Don’t enjoy much drinking, but want to participate in HH. What are some light beers (but won’t be made fun of) on tap that you’d recommend for me?

1:52
Eno Sarris: Ask for a saison or pilsner, I like Firestone Walker Pivo Pils, Saison Dupont as readily available. Those will have taste and live under 6%.

1:53
Fanthead: dear Eno: Nearby to our North Carolina home runs the Eno River. Here is an Old School tribute to that: the kind of (seemingly) over-produced 1970s pop song that should not work but does: “River Song” from Dennis Wilson’s 1977 solo gem. Thanks for another fun, smart chat!

1:53
Eno Sarris: The Eno River! I’ve hung out on those banks.

1:53
PTBNL: Does Jeff know that when you search his name on google images the first photo that pops up is you?

https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS753US753&biw=1366&bih=63…

1:53
Eno Sarris: Eighth place on his own list. Sad!

1:54
Matt: Why was Aaron farting on your website? Why are you OK this that? How does someone fart on something intangible?!

1:54
Eno Sarris: The fart itself is fairly intangible, I think it works.

1:54
Bob Cobb: Was pursuing YouTube and came across a fangraphs video from 2012 AFL. My biggest take away, and maybe I’m late to the party on this, is that not enough is made of David Appelman’s resemblance to Dustin Diamond

1:54
Eno Sarris: gonna leave that there

1:55
Marty: I was there! I was at Shea Stadium for one of Rafael Belliard’s two career homers. It was a blow out, and the Braves were winning (shock) and he was practically doing cartwheels…it was amazing

1:55
Houzer: My father-in-law brought over a 6er of Brown Shugga. Downed 4 of them over the BBQ, and could barely walk back to the house. What the hell is up with 10% ABV brewskis?

1:55
Eno Sarris: I avoid almost entirely.

1:55
Jay: 62% of balls hit > 400ft at AT&T park have been HRs…only 8% have not been XBHs.  It may have to do more with the fog/wind suppressing fly ball distance than how far the fences are.

1:55
Eno Sarris: Temperature for sure. But moving fences helps deal with that.

1:56
Rhys’s Phyc’s: Just curious about what you don’t like about Rhys. His blend of (BB%/ISO/wRC+) virtually unmatched by any young AAA 1B over the last 10+ years.

1:56
Eno Sarris: Nothing much other than age and handedness. I’ll buy.

1:56
Brick Tamland : I would like to extend to you an invitation to the pants party.

1:56
Eno Sarris: NO I’M ALL IN ON NO PANTS

1:56
JKD: re: Manager WAR, Thomas Boswell likes to look at the BaseRuns-Actual split over time. It’s noisy in single or even a couple seasons, but for longer careers it actually tracks reasonably well with the generally-agreed-upon best and worst managers (but delivers some surprises!).

1:57
Eno Sarris: I’ve seen that. I’m worried it just awards the manager the breakouts on his team, but… maybe we should? I might include that but not rely on it.

1:58
Sonny Gray’s Anatomy: Name ten beers you hate. Name five microbreweries that you just dislike.

1:59
Eno Sarris: Fat Tire, Anchor Steam, Mirror Pond, Brooklyn Lager, Stone’s Bastard, Sam Adams. Breweries? harder, because a lot of these guys make good beers too.

1:59
Rich: Guisados for tacos near Dodger Stadium.  Very close to Sunset Beer.

1:59
Mike Milligan: Dodger Stadium close to Chinatown and Olivera Street. Lot of good food choices

2:00
Larry: Is taking your kids to a brewery ok or bad parenting?

2:01
Eno Sarris: Okay if travel is sorted by DD or trains and it’s a family-friendly spot (outdoor spot or games). I grew up in a restaurant with a bar.

2:01
LudeBurger: Ya boi is making his masters thesis proposal presentation on piranhas right now. Holla if you want any (don’t actually, they’re illegal in most states)

2:01
A. Reitz: Eno…you look more like Krusty the Clown than Jack White. I’m sorry man…

2:01
Eno Sarris: “The, Bart, The”

2:02
Eno Sarris: okay I gotta work! Thanks for hanging out!

As a Cubs fan, I have to give the Sox props for ignoring the stigma of trading with the Cubs and making a great trade. Nobody believed it would happen, until it did, but it made so much sense for both teams.
