2018 Ottoneu FGPts Rankings: C/1B/3B

Today we are kicking off our annual series on ottoneu FanGraphs points league rankings. This year the rankings will include values from myself, Trey Baughn, and the default values from the FanGraphs Auction Calculator using the ottoneu FanGraphs points preset (Steamer projections). We are presenting our individual dollar values, plus the weighted average of all three rankings (2:2:1 weighting with the Auction Calc weighted less). In addition, the tables below include ottoneu eligibility (5 games started/10 games played in the prior year). Players are ranked only at their most valuable position, and the hierarchy we are using is C/SS/2B/3B/OF/1B (with 3B and OF being a coin toss in terms of replacement level, we chose to include 3B/OF eligibles at 3B).

Key:

AVG – Weighted average of Auction Calc, Vibber, and Baughn values
Avg Sal – Average salary across Ottoneu FGpts leagues
Own%– Percentage of FGPts leagues player is currently owned in (as of 2/13/18)

Observations:

  • The catcher rankings are dominated by three names at the top- one veteran (Posey), and two youngsters (Sanchez and Contreras)
  • After the top three names the position thins out considerably, and past Realmuto and Perez I’d probably just shop in the bargain bin at the position
  • The Auction Calc values heavily favor total points and playing time versus the values from Trey and myself, which explains the large differences with guys like Grandal/Iannetta/Molina/Martin. Catcher is an easy position to platoon given the two slots in the lineup (but a 162 games cap), so I think favoring Pts/G over total points is the way to go

Observations:

  • Two stud anchors in Votto and Goldshmidt, but this position feels much lighter at the high end than in years past
  • There are reasons to buy guys like Abreu/Cabrera/Encarnacion in the next tier, but all carry warts and you may find that they cost more at auction than they probably should
  • Like catcher, this is another position where I would bargain hunt/platoon if I’m not able to roster one of the top few options. I particularly like Greg Bird, and there are a couple intriguing bats that have yet to find a home in free agency (Duda and Morrison)

18108 Cory Spangenberg 3B/OF $ – $ – $ 1.0 $ 0.4 $ 2.4 3.4

Observations:

  • Unlike C and 1B, 3B feels incredibly deep this year
  • Arenado/Bryant/Freeman/Donaldson are consensus studs, and Bryant and Freeman also offer some roster flexibility with their dual eligibility
  • Machado is ranked here as a 3B, but his value would go about a fair amount when/if he earns SS eligibility, so keep that in mind
  • A couple top prospects at this position (Senzel and Vlad Jr.), Senzel should contribute as soon as this year and Guerrero carries a ton of helium (mostly deserved)

“Players are ranked only at their most valuable position, and the hierarchy we are using is C/SS/2B/3B/OF/1B”

Phew, I was about to go into a rage about Hoskins and Olson missing from the 1b list, then I read the actual article.

Given the recent articles about how positional scarcity isn’t a thing anymore, and how auction values are the best way rank players along a talent distribution curve… and since eligibility is so fungible and everyone wants players on different lists then where you put them anyway…

Maybe you should just do a single all-hitter list with auction values and currently-eligible positions that people can copy and filter? Is it more work for the writers? Not necessarily — one shot and done. Is a long list tough to read? Not at all, and this way people can make whatever filtered list they want.

Except that’s just Steamer right now, and Steamer+Zips eventually, but no eye tests from our Otto RG writers.
