Bullpen Report: May 27, 2023

The 2023 version of the Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Outlier Saves

Tristan Beck, SFG | RosterResource

The Giants had Friday’s game won by the third inning, when they were out to a 10-1 lead. It was 12-1 by the time Beck took the mound with two outs in the sixth, and he ultimately finished the game without allowing a run, striking out two along the way for his first career save. He’s been a passable multi-inning arm in his first taste of MLB, with a 4.63 ERA in 23.1 innings spanning just nine appearances.

•Chad Kuhl, WSN | RosterResource

Kuhl opened the season in Washington’s rotation, where he pitched to a disastrous 9.41 ERA over five starts before hitting the IL with foot metatarsalgia. He moved to the bullpen upon his return to accommodate Jake Irvin sticking in the rotation, and fired two scoreless innings on May 23 before taking the ball three days later in a wild game in the eighth. He was able to maintain Washington’s lead with runners on before pitching a scoreless ninth, ultimately recording five outs and earning his first career save. His heavy sinker might make him a good relief weapon to have for a bullpen that’s struggled to find good middle relief.

It’s Oakland so it probably doesn’t matter, but Pruitt pitched the 6th on the 23rd then was the opener of the 24th. Does that somewhat take him out of closer opps?
Might be the opener today as well.
