Call ups

The Rangers called up top prospect Willie Calhoun on Tuesday and he went 1-for-4 in his debut while playing in left field. Calhoun was acquired in the Yu Darvish deal and hit 31 home runs between double and triple-A with a .300/.355/.572 triple slash. He is defensively challenged, but the Rangers appear willing to give him a shot in the field down the stretch and should be roster in most formats for the remainder of the season.

The Cardinals called up outfield prospect Magneuris Sierra. Sierra is an extremely speedy outfielder that will likely provide depth rest of the way for the Cardinals, but in deeper formats he could get some cheap stolen bases and is worth a roster spot.

Japanese Invasion

According to Buster Olney of ESPN, multiple MLB executives believe that Shohei Otani will be posted and sign with a Major League club in the offseason. This is a bit shocking due to the fact if Otani waits one more year, he would enter traditional free agency and not be subject to the international spending rules. Signing this offseason would cost him a lot of money in the short term. However, he seems intent on coming sooner rather than later. Otani has been a pitcher and hitter in Japan and has excelled in both departments. It remains to be seen how he would be utilized in the US, but he would be the sure fire #1 pick in supplemental drafts for dynasty formats and likely will go in the top50-100 in redrafts based hype alone.

Various News and Notes

Adrian Beltre was activated off of the 10-day Dl on Tuesday. He was not in the lineup and Evan Grant reports are that he isn’t healthy yet and could miss the remainder of the season while still active. He is droppable in most leagues if he was still rostered.

According to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Greg Bird received an MRI on his ailing back and there was no structural damage seen. He is expected to return to the lineup on Wednesday, but may see more time on the bench if the back flares up.

Terry Francona reported that Jason Kipnis hopes to return Sunday from injury. Reports earlier in the week talked about Kipnis attempting to play centerfield for the Indians with Bradley Zimmer being done for the year. If kipnis can play enough games down the stretch he will be able to gain outfield eligibility for next year which could make him a bit more interesting in 2018 drafts. It remains to be seen whether he can handle the position, but the Indians have shown that they care less about outfield defense than some other clubs.

Henderson Alvarez will make his season debut for the Phillies on Sunday. Alvarez pitched well in Independent league ball and during his 19 inning stretch in AAA, but is best served for a reserve list in NL only for now.

Lance McCullers was scratched from his start for today due to arm fatigue. Manager AJ Hinch did not seem concerned following Tuesday’s game and characterized it as precautionary. Consider him day-to-day for now, but monitor this closely.

A pitcher for today: Matt Moore vs LAD

Moore has been better at home and the Dodgers may rest some starters after officially clinching a playoff spot last night. I have tickets to this game and hope to god Moore pitches well.

A pitcher for tomorrow: NONE

Just either don’t like the lower end pitchers on the slate or the matchup is bad.
