Around the Majors: Retirement

1) Pirates P Todd Ritchie retired.

Injuries limited Ritchie to just 9 games over the past 2 years. He had a 4.71 career ERA, compared to his league average of 4.51, and -18 RSAA in 184 games.

2) Mets P Steve Trachsel flew to Los Angeles to see a back specialist. He is hoping to avoid surgery and expects to start the season on the DL.

3) The Nationals sent Ps Michael Hinckley, Josh Karp and Dan Smith to the minors and placed P Francis Beltran on the 60 day DL.

Beltran will have ligament replacement surgery today and is probably out for the season.

4) The Redsox sent INFs Alejandro Machado and Kenny Perez, OF Chip Ambres and Ps Abe Alvarez, Chris Smith, Manny Delcarmen, Anibal Sanchez, Luis Mendoza, and Juan Cedeno to the minors.

5) The Phillies sent 3B Juan Richardson, OFs Chris Roberson and Jorge Padilla, C Tim Gradoville, utilityman John Castellano and Ps Keith Bucktrot, Zack Segovia and Francisco Butto to the minors.

6) The Dodgers sent 1B, James Loney, 2B Delwyn Young, OFs Tydus Meadows and Jon Weber and Ps Ryan Ketchner, Joel Hanrahan, Orlando Rodriguez and Derek Thompson to the minors.

7) The Cardinals sent utilityman Wilton Guerrero, 1B Chris Duncan, 3B Mike Bell and Ps Rhett Parrott, Toby Borland, Jeremy Cummings, Chris Gissell, Hector Mercado, Nerio Rodriguez, Brad Thompson to the minors.

8) The Yankees sent INF Ferdin Tejada to the minors.

9) The Devil Rays sent Ps Jason Hammel and Brian Stokes to the minors.

10) The Diamondbacks sent OFs Josh Kroeger and Reggie Abercrombie, Doug DeVore, Cs Juan Brito, Corey Myers and Alan Zinter and Ps Casey Daigle, Enrique Gonzalez, Dustin Nippert, Justin Wechsler and Phil Stockman to the minors and released P Donovan Osborne.

Osborne may be willing to re-sign with them, with a minor league contract.

11) The Angels sent Cs Ryan Budde and Bobby Wilson and Ps Tim Bittner, Von Stertzbach, Delvin James and Bob Zimmerman to the minors.

12) The BlueJays sent 3B John Hattig, INF Raul Tablado, OF Miguel Negron, C Tim Whittaker and Ps Jason Arnold, Ismael Ramirez and Vince Perkins to the minors.

13) The Orioles sent 1B Walter Young, C Eli Whiteside and Ps John Maine, Jacobo Sequea, Adam Loewen, Hayden Penn, Brian Forystek, Tony Saunders and Marino Salas to the minors.
