Billy Wagner changes his mind, goes to the Sox

Some days I wonder why I even bother trying to get posts up quickly:

The Mets agreed to send Wagner to the Red Sox on Tuesday after the pitcher approved the trade, according to his agent, Bean Stringfellow. The talks were dead as of late Monday night due to Wagner’s refusal to waive his no-trade clause. But Wagner reconsidered at the last minute, lured by the pull of a pennant race.

Or else he did a quick analysis, realized that the Sox are a flawed team that won’t be making the postseason and thus he doesn’t have to worry about throwing any more pitches in Boston than he would have in Queens.

Way to TOTALLY bury the lead, Craig.

His agent’s name is BEAN STRINGFELLOW.

BEAN.

STRINGFELLOW.

That’s way funnier than Riggleman.

I wonder if he’s skinny.  It’d be even more hilarious if he was fat.

It has to be a nickname:

(1) Most parents would not be so cruel as to
name a child “Bean” when possessing a last name
of “Stringfellow”

(2) If his parents truly were that cruel, then
surely he’d go by his middle name, or a nickname,
or *something*.

Then again, I once knew a guy with the last name of Rider who, rather than go by “Richard” or “Rick” insisted on being called “Dick.”  So I suppose there’s no explaining human behavior.

His real name is Thornton.  Played minor league ball for the Braves and Mets in the 80’s.

…and, he was teammates in Richmond in 1988 with John Smoltz, who famously lost game 7 of the 1991 World Series to an 11-year old.

…who now pitches for the Yankees who play across the river from the Mets and weighs 812 pounds because of knowing Kevin Bacon.

Thread over.  Travis wins for the 11-year-old reference.

Nicely done, Travis.  You win all teh Internets.

Ah!  And then YankeesfanLen adds to the joy with the Kevin Bacon reference.

I love this thread *so much*.

The Sox are definitely a flawed team that won’t be going DEEP into the post season, but it’s hard to say that a team that’s currently leading the wild card definitively WON’T be making the post season, especially since they have more home games and fewer games left against division leaders to play. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see the Sox spend October home, but it’s ridiculous to be calling them out of it.

I didn’t expect much out of this thread. Boy was I mistaken. Bravo to all.

I actually giggled (might have been more of a chortle) out-loud on this thread.  Well done.

Stringfellow’s partner in the agency, Carrot Fuzzywhiskers, was unavailable for comment.

Who told the writers for “Austin Powers: Baseball has lost it Mojo” about Shysterball?
