See you at GenCon, Curt!

Those of you concerned that Curt Schilling’s retirement from baseball means that he’ll be writing more may take some comfort in the fact that No. 38 has a day job now:

Following the announcement of his retirement from baseball yesterday, former Red Sox pitcher Curt Shilling spoke at the GamesBeat game conference in San Francisco about his next venture, 38 Studios. While he didn’t reveal any new details about the massively multiplayer RPG he’s been developing, currently code named Copernicus, he did chat a bit about the transition from playing on a sports team to running a game studio.

“I lived my life in reverse,” he commented. “I spent the first half of my life retired,” speaking about how he viewed baseball as what he would have done for fun,”and then 20 years later went to work,” referring to the fact that he now has a “real job” — or something much closer to one, anyway. He claims that he still loves what he does so much that he comes in to work at 7:00 AM because he’s so eager to get started on the day.

I had forgotten that Schilling was into RPGs, but now that I read this I recall him talking about that in the past. I spent a little time in my youth playing these things, offline of course. I’m glad that minor obsession ended, though, because I can’t think of anything more unpleasant than embarking on a campaign with a group of strangers only to have it become apparent later that one of them was Schilling.

think theres any money in copyrighting a baseball themed LARP?  you know, for the kids who inexplicably get into a sport that they have no ability to play.

This made me think- Why hasn’t someone created a baseball MMP game. It would be great. You could start as a 18 year old prospect and progress through a whole career. Completing games and training tasks could give your skills a boast throughout your journey and you could retire to a nice coaching or management position. I would play that game.

I have been to GenCon.  Probably the dorkiest moment of my life.  My Dad took me.

Amazingly, I have a girlfriend now.  Can’t take these things for granted.

My girlfriend wants to take me to GenCon… I am not a dork.  I smirk as I tease her about the kids in the costumes and trenchcoats…  But she’s curvy so I accept her.

Why is Schilling interested in Rocket Propelled Grenades? What’s that? Oh, I see. Never mind.

Although I can’t stand Schilling (phony bloody sock crap, neo-con stooge, steroid hysteric, etc.), I genuinely find his commitment to constructive endeavors outside of baseball commendable, especially when compared to many other pro athletes.  As many fans know, all pro athletes – from the lowest minors on up – are forced to eat, drink, and sleep Sport from the time they’re adolescents until they’re discarded (usually at age 25 or so).  Tragically, many of them then find themselves unemployed and with no knowledge base, education, or skill set that is of practical use in today’s world.  Schilling has had the… Read more »

Everytime I read something about Schilling, here or elsewhere, he gets pounded.  And I can’t help but think that “celebrating diversity” is nothing more than lip service.  Here’s an athlete who does what we all say we want, that is, give thoughtful answers to questions that reflect what he believes.  He’s honest.  But because he reports his viewpoints, which are generally conservative-based, there’s no tolerance.  Celebrating diversity apparently does not include diversity of thought.

Why exactly do you believe that his bloody sock was a fake? I don’t have any proof that it wasn’t, but I haven’t heard anyone on his team during that time say or hint that it was a scam.

On another note, I was just wondering what your thoughts are about whether man really did land on the moon, or if dinosaurs actually existed.
