Ynoa is among a handful of pitchers still in the hunt to temporarily replace starter Chris Tillman (shoulder) to open the season, Jon Meoli of the Baltimore Sun reports. (3/22/2017)
Profiles: 2017 (Click Year to Expand / Close)
|Profile: A mid-level pitching prospect for the Mets, the 23-year-old Ynoa spent most of 2016 in AAA, where he started 25 games but profiled as more of a low-floor, high-ceiling reliever at the MLB level. Ynoa was called up to the majors in August, initially pitching from the bullpen before making a few starts near the end of the season, most notably an 8-K, 1 ER, 4.2-inning appearance against the Twins on September 18. Ynoa could reprise his swingman role in 2017, but with the end of the Mets rotation looking pretty crowded, he's more likely to compete for a full-time slot in the bullpen. Ynoa has exhibited decent command and some promising secondary pitches, but he will need to prove that his 8.35 K/9 in the majors last year was not a fluke if he wants to guarantee a major league spot this season. His fantasy relevance for 2017 is minimal. (Brice Russ)|
The Quick Opinion: Ynoa made it to the majors in 2016, where he showed enough to impress but not enough to guarantee himself a spot in the Mets bullpen this year. There's some long-term upside here, but it's unlikely he'll be fantasy-relevant in 2017.
