News: Delgado (May surgery to repair torn labrum in hip), who will be scouted in person by the Mets this weekend, hit his first winter ball home run on Thursday.

Analysis: Delgado is trying to show he is healthy after last May's surgery and earn a contract with a major league club for this season. The Mets improved their hitting by signing Jason Bay but may be looking for more power, so they could turn to Delgado, especially if they fail to sign Benjie Molina. For the Mets to sign Delgado, he must show that he is physically healthy, meaning he can play the field and run without incident several days in a row, and be willing to sign an incentive-laden deal like Troy Glaus did with the Braves.

News: Delgado, out since May 11 with a hip injury that required surgery, caught a few throws Thursday at first base during batting practice, the NY Newsday reports.

Analysis: Manager Jerry Manuel said on Wednesday that Delgado could return before the season ends, which was in contrast to what he said Sunday, when he thought Delgado was done for the year. Delgado wants to play and have, however brief, a reappearance at the end of the season to show potential suitors that he could still be an attractive free agent this winter.
